Christopher Lee helped Hammer Films gain international recognition with his performance as Dracula. It was a role he would return to time and again, but not through choice. This is the story of Christopher Lee and Hammer Dracula franchise.

Would be really cool to delve into the Hammer mummy series or just the oddities of Hammer like Doctor Jekl sister Hyde, legend of the seven golden vampires, vampire circus, or we are the damned. Anyway, great channel. I'm subscribing.

I was working at Elstree when Lee was making Dracula A.D 1972. One morning I was on my way through the main block to the canteen when I turned a corner and bumped right into Dracula, red eyes, swirling black cloak, the lot. I jumped and screamed, and he laughed and apologised. From then on every time he saw me around the studios he’d wave and smile!

What a terrific story Paul (and what a fright...lol)...Were you working on the film itself at the time and what was your job (if you don't mind me asking??)...I also LOVE all the stories and memories people have of making the film...I keep hoping there's some more footage somewhere of the 'making' of 'Dracula A.D.1972'...(there is some brief footage in a 'trailer' for the film on 'KZfaq' but I love all the production stuff)...I know 'Dracula A.D.1972' was panned at the time but it has since become a bit of a 'cult' classic..(almost 50 years old now?)...I personally love it...and it's my favourite of the Hammer 'Dracula' series...

Gareth Freeman I was assistant editor on Henry 8th and his Six Wives being made at Elstree at the same time. When 15 I got to meet Brian Lawrence the Hammer executive and a distant relation of my mother who put me in touch with Hammer supervising editor James Needs. Both more or less brushed me off so I had to find my own way into the business which I eventually did. Back then you had to be a union member and becoming one was difficult, but I eventually managed. Then came the next hurdle, I had no experience and had to find an editor willing to take me on and train me. I have been a Hammer fan all my life but I never got to work for the company. Nor did I ever work with Christopher Lee, so that early morning at Elstree remains a treasured moment,one that still makes me smile.

Check out his performance as a Nazi U-Boat commander opposite Toshiro Mifune in 1941, very funny! Shadow of the Vampire is an interesting take on the genre. Willem Dafoe plays Max Shreck, the actor who played Count Orlok in Nosferatu (1922). In Shadow of the Vampire he's a real vampire who's hired by F.W. Murnau (John Malkovich) who wants to make his movie as authentic as possible.

This, as far as I know, unique two-part documentary which focuses on the late, great, Christopher Lee and his complicated relationship with the part that made him an international star, as well as Hammer Studios, is a delight, and never more so than when the focus shifts to his personal and professional relationship with his great friend and co-star Peter Cushing. I was born the same year that “(Horror of) Dracula” was released, and by the time I was allowed to watch the ‘shocking’ Hammer films at home I had already seen most of the Universal classics, but Lee immediately became the very personification of the dreaded Count, and has remained so ever since; as someone once sang, “nobody does it better.” I met Lee at a fan-club event in a London hotel during the early ‘70’s; he was utterly charming, gracious, and understanding, although I had no idea just how gracious and understanding til some years later! The evening would start with Lee giving us a potted biography, then we would be shown two(!) films, after which there would be an extended Q&A session where he would answer questions and sign autographs etc. Lee’s introductory talk was light and self-depreciating, even when talking about his WWII service, and we all listened with rapt attention! Then the lights went down and I waited for, in order of preference, “Dracula” or “The Curse of Frankenstein” to flicker to life; what we got was… “The Devil Ship Pirates” and “I, Monster.” It certainly wasn’t what I / we were expecting, but hey, we were watching with the Great Man himself, so we all clapped and cheered at the end of each film anyway… and at least “I, Monster” was a proper Horror film! In a world without social media and a more deferential press it was easier for actors and studios to control their respective narratives, unless they gave the tabloid / gutter press a reason to start digging of course, and I doubt that any of the guests in the room, myself included, was aware of Lee’s true feelings towards the Dracula films and the studio that made them. Lee started the Q&A session with a smile saying the main reason he’d filmed “…Pirates” was that he was allowed to do his own fencing in the fight scenes! There were a few questions about “I, Monster,” Lee was very happy that the film stayed close to the original book, and then for the next hour or so he answered question after question after question about the Dracula films, with praise for his co-stars, especially Peter Cushing, and everyone in the Hammer team who worked so hard to make the films a success! He took every question seriously and gave fulsome answers, usually delivered with a dry wit, never once hinting that anything was amiss behind the scenes. He was in a room full of his fans; he knew what we wanted, and as I said with charm, grace, and understanding, he made sure he didn’t disappoint us!

I attended a festival screening of "Horror of Dracula" back in 2012. Lee was there was Q and A afterwards. The audience clapped, read the end credits, and clapped again. Onstage was a fireside colonial chair, a desk, an ashtray, and a bottle of water. Out comes Mr. Lee, a tall suited stately gentleman looking like a conservative basketball player, and sits. The audience, the catwalk crew, the concession people in the lobby, even security, all in wild applause. He lit his pipe and quietly puffed amid a sly grin for like the next three minutes waiting for them to calm down. He discussed his career, his admiration for Peter and Boris Karloff, and the ending. A comment was made about Dracula having a tear in his eye as he decayed in the sun's rays so much so there were sobs in the audience. He agreed. It was. He said Dracula was always in torment for condemnation to acts that saddened and repulsed him. But being sent back into the abyss, an existence without a body, was more painful. He always looked for redemption in the characters he played. He never judged them. Even an arch vampire. Silence from the crowd. He puffed again with slow resonant release. And they applauded again.

@shihanUKS
@shihanUKS 2 жыл бұрын
@@hareema4442 Indeed. That scene was so powerful it was re=edited by the producers for fear of Dracula losing his "without remorse" image. They wanted his portrayal as linear and heartless as possible which they felt was in line with the novel. Lee, the actor, stood against that and the tears made the final cut in various versions. One of Lee's fans was Dan Curtis. You can understand now why vampire Barnabas Collins of "Dark Shadows" was such a tormented yet sympathetic figure.

A wonderful review of the first few films. Dracula will always be Christopher Lee's supreme creation. The way he could rise above the limits of the material, do so much with so little screen time or dialogue, even make that eerie stillness an active part of the character will never be matched. But people must remember that this Dracula is only a very, very small portion of his work. I hope that people who love Lee's Dracula will go out in search of his other films, some good, some not so, but always with that special Lee performance.

Real talk: Dracula's resurrection in Prince of Darkness is my favourite scene in the entire run of Hammer's Dracula. Everything from the footsteps of Klove, the drum in the background, the hanging of poor Alan, the blood pouring over Dracula's ashes which causes the room to go darker, everything just comes together to make it 1 epic scene. And let's not overlook Klove in this, this guy's general calm nature as well as his clear loyalty to his master really brings the character to life!

Thanks for covering this series, one of the better in horror imo. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee played off each other brilliantly in the first film, More-so that in Curse of Frankenstein and for me, made Cushing into the person I enjoyed seeing through many a late night movie back in the day. It never occurred to me til later when reading interviews in Famous Monsters and other mags that Lee didn’t like to keep doing it, as he always seemed to put his best foot forward in the movies. I can’t wait to see the next part of this.

I am not exactly sure which one, [and it might have happened more than once;] Hammer would lay a "guilt trip" on Christopher, by telling him: "Think of the people that you would be putting out of work, by refusing to appear." I think, specifically, it was Dracula, Prince Of Darkness, that I know was a problem, because he refused to speak any of the lines that were written for him, because he didn't like them.

In MY humble opinion, Sir Christopher Lee was THE quintessential "Dracula!" So many people talk about Bela Lugosi in the 1930's, but I never found his Dracula scary at all because I just couldn't get past his accent! Even when I was a kid, I simply found his performance and his accent...funny and hammy. There was absolutely nothing funny about the way Mr. Lee portrayed him! He was scary, ferocious, seductive and evil, and that's how Count Dracula was supposed to be portrayed!

I also enjoyed Lee's attempt at comedy. In 1941 lee's German was flawless and he did a great character ( never imagined EVER Lee doing a scene with an old Western star like Slim Pickins). The role of Dracula brought him notoriety and a fang club...I mean fan club. When I was 10 years old I sat alone in the Clinton Theatre in Columbus, Ohio and watched this movie on the big screen. It was both terrifying and riveting, in great part due to James Bernard's musical score. I always thought it was a great movie even though many critics snubbed their noses at the horror genre back then. I'm glad to see that it has received the recognition, admiration and accolades that it deserves.

Hammer Van Helsing arguably had as great a cultural impact as Hammer Dracula. Before Cushing took up the hammer and stakes, films mostly pitted vampires against wimpy romantic leads and stern but fairly passive mentors. Cushing, backed by Fisher and the scriptwriters of Horror and Brides, basically created the idea of a dedicated monster hunter who was an interesting character in his own right. Captain Kronos (who inspired Vampire Hunter D) started as an attempt to build on/outdo the Hammer Van Helsing, so did the D&D clerical class (partially), so, arguably, did Carl Kolchak, Buffy Summers, to say nothing of a whole host of characters in urban fantasy novels descended from Carl or Buffy.

But recently had a vivid nightmare one night after seeing it on late night TV. In my dream Lee was terrifying with long nails and able to cling to the wall. He was So cold and ready to kill. And you have captured this with your video. Lee portrayted the chilling Dracula so well in this film. Also the eroticism was censorsed for 1950's cinema viewers which you cover excellently. I hope it's not too long before Parts 3, 4 and 5 are made for great late night viewing.
