After watching Tenet and reading much of the discourse surrounding the film, I wanted to take a more in-depth look at one of the criticims Nolan's recent films has faced - his prioritsation of concepts over characters, and why I think in the context of his films, that actually works well.

Completely agree with you. I've always seen it as a strength not a weakness. Although I dont think Tenet is one of his weaker films. I loved it. Just like i dont think Interstellar is a weak film, even though its not one of my favourites. I think all his films are of a certain quality whereby it just comes down to a person's subjective taste.

Thanks for watching! Yeah totally, regardless of how you rank his films, I think a lot of people would agree they're all at least good - as a director he's fantastic at appealing to a wide variety of audiences in that way.

Since Inception he always makes multiple storyline movies where time is a deciding factor. Like in Dunkirk it's about one week + one day + one hour.

Good to know someone else shares similar thoughts about this. Having literally seen Tenet about an hour before writing this comment, I was deadset on making a video that tackles a similar topic as this, focused specifically on the characters, as my opinion on them changes all the time. Great video! As an aspiring video-essayist myself, its cool to stumble upon stuff like this.

Thanks for watching! I'm looking forward to watching it a second time and see if the characters work more for me, especially Neill as I think on re-watch, with the added context of the ending, he could be really interesting

Nolan is best to create mastermind and complexity elements in the script and frame that's why he is different than others

I personally didn't understand what sort of character arc was lacking in tenet. You might not get it in the first watch because you are seeing the movie from the protagonist 's perspective who like us is discovering this world his relationship with Neil and kat and who he is by the end of the film. But in the second watch it definitely gets better as you understand the movie from Neil's perspective and the emotional arc for every character is definitely there. Also there are a lot of reviews saying that Kat as the protagonist's love interest felt forced and lacked any depth...it was not actually a relationship but a friendship that existed between them and this is one of the things that were greatly misunderstood in the movie

It just wasn’t as strong and I expected more from him. With a plot heavy film like tenet, you gotta make the characters interesting not just emotional. I didn’t feel connected to protagonist at all. And many others may agree. But to each his own I guess

Tenet is my least favorite of Nolan's films, primarily because of the heavy use of concept that even the plot is jumbled around too much. It would be great for him to make a sequel to Tenet to fully flesh out this story, because there is a trilogy or even a four part series I can see in this one story.
