I know that Mr. Plummer disliked being remembered mostly for playing "Captain von Trapp" in "The Sound of Music"--but I wonder whether someone could explain to me how the real Captain von Trapp could have been in the Austrian Navy--since Austria was/is a landlocked country--unless he could have been in the Navy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which included Croatia and Slovenia that *do* have coasts on the Adriatic Sea.

I think the real Maria Von Trapp addressed that in her book. My understanding is that the real CvT was in the Navy in the early 1900s, and when the empire lost the war, they lost all the land bordering the sea. CvT and MvT were married in 1929 and left Austria along with their family 10 years later.

On the Sound of Music sets he played the correct Captain but he himself was a hard drinking womaniser. Sad but true.

Christopher Plummer was a drinking womanizer for a while than he settled down quit drinking and married his last wife and they lived happily ever aftet.
