Is it just a fancy gimmick or actually useful? In this video, we will find out the accuracy, and the time savings we can accomplish with a tool length sensor.
i bought this Tool Length Sensor:

Thanks for the video. I got to revisit mine and finally set it up properly and mainly get used to using it. Got one installed and it has been sitting on the machine for over two months. Just tried it once or twice. This proves I could have saved a lot of time already...

Nice! I have the same one, now I'm motivated to wire it up and start using it. Unfortunately I'm running Mach4, too bad their forum isn't as helpful. Also two great tips on Fusion that I didn't know yet, thanks!

Haven’t even watched the video yet, but if you’ve got this thing figured out you are my hero! Mine in LinuxCNC has been giving me nothing but problems. Whatever they use for the top disk material is hard. I've smashed an 8mm endmill into it (because I programmed it going the wrong way in a G0 move :D) and it didn't even make much of a dent

It took me.2 weeks fiddeling to get this thing working 😅 The topcover must be made out of carbide, mine came loose so i had to glue it back in, and this disk is really heavy Yeah wiring the overtravel switch should be mandatory, i also broke mine, doing a g0 x0 y0 z0...

@@ChristophLehner Same. Every single person that has used this very style of tool height setting has said that the puck has come out during shipping. I smashed mine even when testing out the over-travel switch because they don’t give you any extra travel for your machine to come to a stop. The Z-max G28 thing is likely why I couldn’t get it working reliably in LinuxCNC so I’ll have to visit that again.

u can calculate the tool length if u have good software, u give it a probing of the bottom part where the toll enters... and then u just probe the tool ... and the difference should be ur tool lenght... is not so much different than probing with clamps on a metal for Z positioning...

@@ChristophLehner No, I get that but I also want this for Klipper. I have modified my gantry endstop to extend past my bed & want to move/modify the normal z endstop for auto z offset when I change nozzles.

Maybe mount the tls in a hole so it's top is more even with the table top? That way you have less to worry about running into the side with longer bits?

@@ChristophLehner yes trust me I learn this from cnc teacher in my training as Industrial mechanican, paper have round 0,1mm thickness but wet you get like 0.05mm and If you put the wet paper on a surface from your part that you want to cnc then travel to the paper and get as close as possible and a little bit more u see the paper fly away and u can press zero 😁 try it :-) if not talk back to me I try to find a video from my Trainee time. (Of course I have to turn on your spindle but only 100-500rpm)

@@ChristophLehner u shaped thing with laser sender and receiver. You would use this to measure the tool length. Due to using the laser it is very repeatable. Although I doubt it will change much for your application as steppers with microstepping themselves are not very accurate. In other words this is probably good enough.
