My daughter found an old CD of mine with the original game music from Chrono Trigger, and she became absolutely mesmerized without having ever seen the game. (We have since played it through together.) This version was stuck in my mind, so I just had to come back and watch/listen again.

I've listened to so many terrible remixes of this song that I was just waiting at every change to be disappointed somehow, but you got there. Thanks for giving what might be the definitive arrangement of this incredible and underappreciated piece.

You have crossed timelines to secure the future of your planet. And on the night of celebrating your ultimate victory, further adventure beckons. As you fly towards an unknown destination, you think of friends and comrades who have stuck by you through time and tide. Though separated by the centuries, memories of past, present and future will forever endure in those who fought to give their existence meaning.

The composer "Yasunori Mitsuda" dedicated this song to his best friend who passed away when he was in high school, and he imagined that he could see hope beyond the time of sorrow. He composed this song with the desire to live the same era together!!

This cover is a time machine to 1995... yet things somehow sound better than I remember.
@edifyguy5 жыл бұрын
This is 1995 the way it was meant to sound but couldn't because of technological limitations. Had the SNES had the ability to play recorded music instead of synthesized, it would have sounded like this.
@AndyWitmyer3 жыл бұрын
@@edifyguy In theory, I agree - but in a way, I'm glad that the SNES was limited the way it was, when it was. Look at what game music would become once composers were more able to do whatever they wanted: mostly ambient and lacking in melody. It was tough to get a full chord sounding nice on the audio-compressed 16-bit hardware - that's precisely why there are so many arpeggios in games like this and many others from those times - and it's great! The SNES limitations bore amazing results.

If you play the DS version just stay the hell away from the extra content. Its a pile of stinky turd on top of a great game.

I remember the first time I heard this in some random place on the web 15 years ago.....had no idea that Chrono Trigger existed or that this was from it, just that whatever it was, it was gorgeous. Played it a decade later, and ah man.....yeah, wish I knew about it as a kid, this game is incredible.

I LOVE how many instruments you always use to bring these to life. You really are a one-person orchestra, and it adds so much to your covers. This is stunning. (I mean, it helps that it's a great composition to begin with, but you do really good things with it here.)

This is how it would have sounded if the SNES had had the ability to store and play recorded music instead of only synthesized. He is perfectly true to the tone and tempo of the original.
@Aeduo4 жыл бұрын
There's something to the soft, crusty audio quality of the SNES though. Musically poor in comparison but for a lot of people it's also a nostalgic experience that makes original version still worthwhile.

This version along with another guy that I follow on KZfaq, Malcolm Robinson do THE best covers of this amazing ending theme. It's a flip of the coin for me because even I can't choose a favorite cover. Amazing work!

@@Aeduo It's because the sound itself is uncomplicated. Especially for a young ear, the sound of the NES and SNES (the Genesis could produce more complex sounds, which maybe is why it's not as memorable) was very easy to just... absorb. Kinda like babies watching Cocomelon. It's an interesting way in which a flaw in one area can become a strength in another. Same reason why so many people play love games like Octopath traveler now... it's a lot easier to focus on a story and mechanics when one isn't trying to watch a whole bunch of cutscenes that are supposed to look visually attractive.

Andrew Thompson's stuff is certainly worthy of having those giant multi-panel split-screen visuals you see on the fancier channels. The dude does multiple takes and multiple tracks for a myriad of instrument sections to fill out his modern orchestral treatments of the classics. Like for example, the string section for this piece is at least 4 violins. It's my understanding Andrew plays each violin separately and then combines them all on editing software to fill out the musical section. I'd imagine a live performance of this piece on a stage would be at least 14 Andrew Thompsons at their stations. Electric Bass (1), Harp (1), Strings (6?), Piano/synth (2?), Recorders (2?), Shaker (1), Horns (4?). One steely-eyed instrumentalist and arranger.
