Chrysler Pt Cruiser Cooling System Bleeding Coolant Bleeding Antifreeze bleeding procedure 2001 - 2009
► Our Website for Tools, Parts and more Videos: mechaniclifestyle.com
We took this video to show you how to properly bleed the cooling system on a Chrysler PT Cruiser. We had the bumper removed only because we had to paint and while we were not able to drive the car we decided to do a few repairs.
We replaced the Thermostat and after that you always have to bleed the coolant system properly. Otherwise, you might end up have air pockets inside the cooling system which could leak to overheating and expensive repairs or even a new Engine!!!
So make sure that you do the procedure properly.
It is the same procedure for all models with the 2.4 Engine:
2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2004 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2007 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2008 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2009 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

The size of the clear tubing is 3/8" outside diameter, 1/4" inside diameter. You only need 8-12 inches of tubing which I had to purchase on a 10 foot roll at Home Depot. Ace Hardware may sell it by the foot. Drill a 3/8" hole in the bottle cap and slip the hose in.

I have a 2005 PT none turbo, it always had a over heating problem since the first day. I just recently replaced the water pump pulleys belt, still overheating. I was thinking maybe the heater hoses might be clogged, also might have to raise the front end of the car up higher. Any good advice would be great thanks..

would jacking up the front of the car, meaning the air will rise to the highest point be a way of bleeding, Also in warmer localities, just remove the inner part of the thermostat, to help solve the heating defect in design

Have 2005 crysler pt cruiser, petcock stacked in radiator. I able to twist it, but can't remove it. When try to lock peacocks still have coolant to drip. Any suggestions how to remove petckock or how to fix this issue?
@guestguide2544
@guestguide2544 7 ай бұрын
They say its always easier just to remove bottom radiator hose to flush (I did on 08 PT). You need a channel lock pliers or a radiator clamp tool for get the clamp off, car needs to be jacked up and on jack stands. The petcock plug can be gotten, those they say are hard to get out. Need to turn from 12 to 7 position and pull the plug out. I avoided doing it as they say you should have a new plug ready as after replacing it may leak. They say lubricate Oring on replacement. I say just remove the hose much easier.

Yes and no. Yes prestone does sell the proper coolant, but it is not the same stuff as the old days. Be sure to use the correct kind to prevent corosion in your cooling system.

Chrysler recommends HOAT, hybrid organic acid technology coolant for the PT Cruiser. OAT is not the same. Has to do with the engine block being cast iron and head is aluminium. Moreover, HOAT is not compatible with other coolant so you must thoroughly drain old coolant if you are uncertain it is HOAT.

I have a 2002 that’s doing the same exact thing and I also changed the sensor temp both relays and fuse, i did a new thermostat and lower thermostat housing and made sure we bled it after by the bleeder valve and everything. I am literally dumbfounded with this thing right now. Anything end up working for you at all by chance?! Thanks 🙏

Air is getting inside and making the coolant hot because of the air turns into steam and gives the temperature sensor a bad reading so it turns the fan on prematurely. Not exactly sure If that’s right but that’s my opinion why the reservoir is always boiling out coolant

Help!! noticed a bubbling sound when the car is just sitting at a red light but not when I am giving it gas...but when I shut he air conditioner off and came to a stop it didn't seem to be making the noise..so i thought it was air related...stop using it.. then out of know where it overheated and steam and water/coolant were coming out of under the hood...managed to get back to a friends by running the heater (in 90^ weather) just a few miles...however there was still visible water when I opened the radiator cap...searched everywhere for a leak or blown hose....Finally found what looked like a melted large hole in the coolant overflow tank about an inch or 2 above the full line rather large and not in anyway near anything that could have touched it to have melted it...i say melted because when i touched it the plastic was still hot/soft/gummy ...nothing near it at all..well you know the distance between the front of the tank and the motor ...Don't know what would have caused this hole...any idea? I've ordered a new one from ebay... now I need to know just how hard it is to put one of these in...wish you had a video on it!!! there are none on here for this at all....

I believe that the Yugo was even worse. Some of those things came from the factory leaking oil and the dealers couldn't fix them, among other issues. The main reason why those severely under-powered things were pulled from the U.S. market was because they had outdated emission control systems that were in violation of the EPA standards of the day and the engineers were unable to resolve the problem. At least the PT Cruiser never violated emissions laws... for what that's worth? 🤣 But yeah, the PT Cruiser does have reliability issues, mostly related to the lousy, overly complicated engine cooling system. Mine overheated and probably warped the cylinder head. Why Chrysler had an aluminum head mounted to a cast iron block is beyond my realm of comprehension. Both metals warp at different temperatures so yeah, you can kiss that head gasket goodbye as the head warps while the block retains its original shape.

In contrast, my brother owns a 2007 Honda Civic that he keeps well maintained and its air conditioner continues to have an issue that the dealer has been unable to fix after multiple trips to them and parts changes that my brother has had to pay for, making me furious at them. Also: the clear coat on his Honda began to peel shortly after its warranty expired; the doors stopped holding themselves open long ago, so one has to keep pushing them open while entering and exiting the car, which is lots of "fun" when the car is parked on an incline; the rubber trim on both sides of the windshield have rotted away, leaving ugly gaps; the rack and pinion assembly leaks, so he has to check the fluid level frequently, etc, etc, etc. While Honda makes great engines and manual transmissions, the rest of the car doesn't last too long before coming down with issues. I would consider the Honda to be a rather "Junkie car." I hope that your Honda is still a good car for you though, Cheryl. :-) Meanwhile, my 2007 PT Cruiser that someone gave to me hasn't gone a couple hundred miles before something in the cooling system breaks. LOL! I have replaced the cooling fan (and the expensive 50 amp fuse in its circuit that it had blown), coolant reservoir and just yesterday I finished installing a new radiator and hoses so yeah, you're right about them being "junkie cars." It even overheated once and that was enough to probably have warped the cylinder head, which is something that I will get around to dealing with later since it's a major job and won't have the time to fix it for a while. Fortunately, I also own a 2002 Saturn SL that's been relatively reliable. In 20 years, it has had a few issues: I had to replace a leaky intake manifold gasket because the factory installed ones are known to disintegrate and mine was no exception. The gasket was cheap and I was able to get the job done in a day. Another issue was that its water pump began to leak several years ago, so I had to replace it. Finally, I had to replace the shifter cables a long time ago because one of them snapped during a very bad time, nearly causing an accident. Well, I almost forgot about having had to replace the end of a shifter cable using one of those "Help" brand things because the original one broke and the cable popped off the shifter while shifting gears (It has a 5-speed manual transmission.) Still, not too bad after 20 years and it's still going strong. OK, I forgot to mention that when it reached ~30,000 miles it began using a quart of oil between changes, which they all do. I check the oil level and top it off when necessary, so it's not a big deal for me. OK, so it's not perfect, but it's still much more reliable than the PT Cruiser and I'd still trust it on a 5 hour drive to Dallas and back, unlike the PT Cruiser which I barely even trust to make it to the local grocery store one-way. LOL Sorry, I do tend to ramble. ADHD is "fun." Ha-ha! Have a good day, or evening, depending on when you read this.
