My band played a club one night and Chuck was sitting at the bar. Coincidentally we always opened every show with Johnny B. Goode. As we started playing the song Chuck finished his drink and left. I joked to my band mates, "Man, we really impressed him!"

Hahahaha great story, he played Johnny B Goode, in D flat. In A maj it has more depth, but Chuck makes it sound good in any key. You probably almost lured him, but he is big headed so he left. So I think you impressed him. I played Bass for him once, and some young kid begged to play drums, he walked over to me and told me to tell that drummer he wanted some clean breaks. As soon as the song started, he skidded to a stop, and faced the young drummer, and told him get off the drums. Poor guy was shamed to death, so another bands drummer said he can do it, and he did, so the show was on, he does not tell you the chords, he just will say the song title and take off, you have to slide down the neck until you hit the key, usually E-D-B flats. Anyway thanks for sharing I love honest pride.

Sad to say we played on the same bill twice with Chuck years ago. He was interested in getting paid in cash and getting gone quickly. He smoked, drank and was quite nasty to all. It's totally true that he didn't care what group played with him and he could be angry and harsh to them right during a performance. He just started playing and you had better be on it right away or else. Too bad for all the fans to finally know how he really was. His poor wife that stuck with him all those years.

He had vices, as many of us do. But I really think his vices were women by the abundance. Lol, I read this stuff about 20 years ago. But I'll bring up something positive to end this text. Chuck Berry was not a drug user, and didn't drink. The raid on Berry Park was a setup by rural redneck police. ( It was his country retreat, with fishing ponds, swimming pool, and recording studio. His family residence was in a high-end suburb of St. Louis ) Mr. Berry was no angel, but he could be a laid-back, regular guy. He had a sly sense of humor, but did not suffer fools gladly. After his first big tour, he enrolled in night-school and took business courses. It took decades, but he recovered full ownership of his first hit songs. ( He had been forced to share credits as "payola" to disk jockey Allen Freed. ) He also went to court and took 1/2 credit for "Surfing U.S.A.", which is the same song as "Sweet Little Sixteen". Later pressings credit the song to "Brian Wilson and Chuck Berry".

I'll never forget afternoon TV show, mid 70s (either Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas) had Berry on: "we boogied in the kitchen, we boogied in the hall, she boogied on my finger so I wiped it on the wall". He even motioned with his tongue and finger. The producers did not seem to know what he meant. I did. I was eleven. Saw him at the Ontario Place Forum two summers later. He could still do the duck walk. Man knew how to work a crowd. Too bad about the perv-cam. He tarnished his legacy.

There was a British documentary in the 70's that Chuck was interviewed for and filmed during a tour (I think)...may have been BBC...I saw it in the late 70's and since then I haven't seen or found anything I searched...Anyone have any ideas where I can find it?...There was an incident where Chuck is asked about his run in with the law and Chuck walked out saying something along the lines of 'this isn't what we agreed to talk about'...My guess is that the interviewer saved this until they had enough footage and Chuck had already signed for the documentary to be aired once it was recorded...It was a fascinating insight and the music was brilliant (I remember because I recorded the music on my first cassette player)...Anyhow...Big Chuck fan here...Saw him in concert and then have visited his grave and his St.Louis home since he passed...From the UK

Being highly literate, an astoundingly talented lyricist, a distinctly original instrumentalist, the most influential recording and live performance artist of your time does not preclude you from very bad behaviour, eh? rock n Roll means "STREET SEX." Sex, drugs and rock n roll have always been an open truth, and proud brag among rock n roll people. Little Richard totally backed up all this just before he died. The Beatles who loved Chuck Berry, said Little Richard was the TRUE first person to invent and play rock n roll. Richard agrees and always has. Richard believed in homosexual orgies and drugs as a lifestyle and sang about it. His lyrics were so filthy the radio could not play his songs without changing some words. This is according to Little Richard himself. Women absolutely love this most debased music , sex, drugs and gladly called themselves groupies and made fan clubs to Rock n rollers.

Yes I do not doubt some of these accusations, because being a star puts you in many provoking situations, I played bass for Chuck Berry before, he was nice, and honorable. But being a star causes many opportunities, and even Jimmy Page had a very young 14 year old, Jerry Lee Lewis, man the rap industry is a universe of sexual crimes, violence, and drugs. In these modern times the internet social media provides many investigative resources to seek out victims. Chuck Berry is not the Lone Ranger in these claims made on the video, it more or less displays he was a common man in the music scene, and they always proudly use this term/motto "Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll", I quit alcohol, drugs, and even cigarettes at a very young age, so many of my Rock & Roll tours, travels I was an outcast, even suspected of being a undercover narco cop, spy, or other when I was in other countries refusing the gifts of drugs, hiding from the woman, and sneaking off to private locations to have a peaceful night, of sleep, and rest while my bass player, drummer, and rhythm guy disappeared with these groups partying, laying with strange women, hang overs, shame, and new secrets to conceal etc. I was the singer, lead guitar, piano, sax, and harp guy, so I was always confronted with this madness, the women superly coming out front, even wrote a couple songs about this behavior, but being sober, I found a way to disappear from this madness. But to many young musicians such as Chuck Berry, they can not resist all these opportunities, and fall prey to the evil, and even becoming the evil. Steven Tyler is going through very old legal, and I call out dated legal issues, which have caught up to him, featuring young women. I do not condone these issues, but they are nothing new. Yes many can attack Chuck Berry, but way to late now, he is gone, but his legacy, and for what he is known for has put him way above even guilt for his deeds, in other words, it is to late to destroy him, even Martin Luther King was guilty for many things. Chuck Berry influenced so many greats that you can call him any name, accuse him of anything, but it doesn't matter Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, still gonna love him. He even performed for the President with all his bad record, the Secret Service is very strict about known criminals, but yet Chuck Berry was let in. All the smut you place on him in this video is legitimate, and I appreciate the more I learned from it, but it can't even put a smear on the image I gained for playing backing up Bass man for Chuck Berry twice in my life, I am still proud, and not shamed, a Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer. He didn't kill a baby, he didn't bomb a country, he didn't treat me like crap for being Lakota (they called us Sioux), In them days a young girl developed was even acceptable. Thomas Jefferson, many historical greats are all accused, but to late now. So yes thank you for the knowledge, thank you for providing awareness of the evilness of a great man. I can even go on, and on about him and others, because look at the followers Trump who was the President of the United States has, look at the masses of Trump supporters, even with all his sexual, rape, and so forth allegations, also Bill Clinton, who people call "curved to the left" after his accusers described how his penis was curved. Anyway blessings to you, I honor your perspective, and opinion, plus the facts you shared.

Yes there's some pretty wild stories of Chuck and certainly was a walking contradiction from all counts. I'm sure being a black man in the 20th century wouldn't have been an easy life for any of them. Certainly a different era and there's lots of stories with rockers from these periods with young girls (Jimmy Page, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Ted Nugent, Marvin Gaye). I'm not condoning his actions by any means but I think you have to take the period into account as well.

I watched Cadillac Records last night on DVD for the first time in years. It's a great movie that every fan of Chess music stars should see. I don't know about Chuck, but Muddy, Wolf, Walter... came from very impoverished environments. I doubt any of them spent much time in school as children and I suspect their upbringing was typically harsh for the time. I don't believe Chuck was as bad as the stories would have you believe. Sure he made some mistakes and some bad calls, but in that time of racism and social decay, these very creative artists had no real formula to follow as to how to behave in 'high society'. And high society judged them harshly for it.

He punched Keef for touching his guitar. He was also known for "borrowing" equipment from other players and never returning it. Keith Richards told Terry Reid when he was on tour with him to not loan Chuck anything. He didn't listen and Chuck "borrowed" Terry's fender twin because he had another gig at a bar on the same day as a tour date. The next date Chuck had gotten amnesia and didn't remember borrowing it. Keith Richards had to send Terry another fender twin to finish the tour and said I told you not to let him borrow anything.
