As part of the Walker's 75th anniversary we are releasing a variety of clips from the Walker's archives.
“There’s no question, I had some attitude about the way I wanted to be perceived,” said Chuck Close in discussing his Big Self-Portrait (1967-1968) at the Walker in 1980. “Now it seems very funny wanting to look like this tough guy with a cigarette sticking out of the corner of my mouth and a big, aggressive image of myself and saying to the viewer, ‘Hey, notice my painting, notice me.’ … I think I was trying to find out who I was an artist.”

Chuck Close is one of my all-time favorite artists of the 20th (and now 21st) Century -- so kool to see this video footage of him explaining the process behind the making of one of his most-iconic pieces!

MoZz: I believe I've seen it in the National Gallery Of Art here in W-DC. I dunno if it's in their permanent collection for that era of art or if it was part of a touring exhibit at the time I saw it -- I believe the former to be the case but am not 100% certain.

@@nicks4875 almost the same name lol responding a bit late, but dont matter that, indeed it is square method! you can find a image where you see his grid, imagine you paint a 2,73m x 2,12m (these are the dimensions) portrait without grid, you need it to be that detailed as he is! Imma laugh my ass off if you two read it and also helped out
