I've always pronounced is name Man-gee-oh-nee (but what do I know). He was part of the whole "smooth jazz" explosion of the mid to late 70's. He was anything BUT a one-hit-wonder.

That's the correct pronunciation. (emphasis on the OH).

BTW, that's "gee" as in "geography" or "gee whiz", not as in "geezer" or "giver".

1975 SUNY Plattsburgh, NY I attended a Chuck Mangione concert. It was held in the gym. There were no seats, just a large plastic sheet laid out on the floor. Attendees simply claimed their space. Since I was one of the first people in, I was at the very front edge of the stage which was only 18-24" high. I could not have been 15 feet from Chuck. It was such a laid back, beautiful feelin, outstanding music evening.

Chuck, along with other Big Band artists including Maynard Ferguson were a major part of any young instrumentalist in the 1970's learning to play any horn, by playing their records and playing along with them. Having seen him in concert several times, including with an orchestra, was always a great experience. The much longer live version of this song has a true Chuck solo to start it out for all his later concerts. Chase the Clouds Away - Featuring a triple flute (alto flute and piccolo) soloist Gerry Niewood (RIP) with Chuck playing keyboard in the background. Incredible live viideo of this showing him switching from the toothpick looking piccolo to the log looking alto flute. Bellavia - His signature song, his mother's Maiden name. Hill Where the Lord Hides - Friends and Love (Live from 1970) opens the concert video with him all by a very young himself in front of the orchestra with Gerry Niewood solo on Soprano Sax. Legend of the One Eyed Sailor Theme from The Children of Sanchez - 14 minutes Consuela's Love Theme - 16 minutes - Chuck on Flugelhorn solo, Sax Solo, Vocal solo plus duets of each of those. Incredibly relaxing song. Lean back and fall asleep. Land of Make Believe - Both the vocal version with Esther Satterfield, and live instrumental with full orchestra which has at one point, FIVE different melodies playing simultaneously. I could go on.

Sweet! "Feels So Good" was a top ten hit in the US in 1978. My mom bought the album on 8-track and used to play it in the car on trips to the city. The album version lasts ten minutes. Grant Geissman plays guitar. Dig that seventies wah-wah in the early passages of the song and the blistering solos in the final sections. Chuck Mangione playing with Art Blakey in the 1960s is something special. Blakey played drums in the big bands of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine, and the various combos of Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie, before forming his own band, The Jazz Messengers, in the late fifties. "Moanin'" from 1959 was their biggest hit, but the Free For All album holds the dynamite. Chuck Mangione took over for Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, but not before the band recorded "Soul Finger" in 1965. Chuck Mangione is also brother to pianist Gap Mangione, whose 1968 album, Diana in the Autumn Wind, marks the recording debut of drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Tony Levin. Gadd performs on Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" and "Late in the Evening" and Steely Dan's "Aja". And Levin is best known for his work with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, but also for his work with Stevie Nicks, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, David Bowie and many others.

Our recent tragedy of the week made me think of a beautiful album Chuck created for the anthropological study of a poor family in Mexico, called "Children of Sanchez" which includes these lyrics: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZsV5gs6np83ceYk.html Every child belongs to mankind's family Children are the fruit of all humanity Let them feel the love of all the human race Touch them with the warmth, the strength of that embrace. Give me love and understanding, i will thrive As my children grow my dreams come alive Those who hear the cries of children. god will bless oh yes he will I will always hear the children of Sánchez.

Man-gee-oh-nee. There was Chuck, and there was Gap, they were brothers, and they both played their own versions of joyful noise. I was fortunate to have been 19 and managing a headshop/record store at the time when Chuck and his fluglehorn crashed the late seventies music scene.

My memory sometimes fails me. I thought for sure that this song was the theme of the 1980 Winter Olympics, but it was another song of his entitled "Give It All You Got". It's also worth listening to, by the way. I remember it was played frequently as background music on the ABC network during recaps of events that were not covered live due to time differences, lack of air time, etc. This was in the days before cable was king. He also had a slower version of the theme called "Give It All You Got But Slowly". I think they played it around the time of the closing ceremonies during a recap of the whole Winter Olympics. Both songs enhanced my enjoyment of the games.

Chuck plays the Flugel Horn. He was jazz musician. Other pieces not as well known by him were the Children of Sanchez, Land of Make Believe, Hill Where the Lord Hides, Give It All You've Got. Feel So Good accidentally tries to turn him into an instrumental pop star. He was a great jazz musician and writer. As trumpet players in music college we all loved his stuff, but agreed even though he was quite technically superior with good tone, he tended to play flat on the top notes, and had several sharp notes on the horn that the average listener does not notice, that with proper playing could have been corrected with careful use of a movable tuning slide [trigger] and most of all careful control of diaphragm and air support. It was not a terrible flaw, but only annoying to trumpet players lol.
