[Album Review]
CHUNG HA gives us the first piece of her first official studio album with “Stay Tonight.” The upcoming studio album is composed of chapters crafted with various musical styles and themes for each of the tracks. Each of the chapters has representative title tracks, which will be cut as singles one by one in order.
Just like light curves and unfolds to form a beautiful spectrum of colors, pieces of music will come together to portray “CHUNG HA” in depths.
As we look forward to her first official studio album that will be completed by releasing the title track of the last chapter, the time has come to appreciate the first piece of her music with hearts aflutter.
[CHUNG HA Pre-Release Single #1 [Stay Tonight]]
The speaker’s tone in “Stay Tonight” holds a rather different temperature from her other existing songs. The time of looking into one’s heart, sometimes being frustrated, and waking oneself up has passed. Now the time of full bloom is here that is like putting together the pieces of painting. And it showcases a vivid sense of self and identity that suggests you stay even in the time of darkness where even the flow of time is scattered.
The house genre plays in branches of variation each of the sections of this song, drawing up dimensions of the sound image. The harp and piano riff heightens the dreamy mood of the song while embellishing the intro. Meanwhile, the stylish baseline and rhythm that are added from the verse build a robust backbone of the song.
The rough base sound that is added to the drop and the chorus section, the soulful piano sound, and layers of synthesizer sound, and high-density vocals drive the song into a steep climax.
While the words of the song connote the theme of love, the song desires to reach out to those who enjoy this album. So “Runaway or Stay Tonight.”

청하가 “Stay Tonight”으로 첫 정규 앨범의 첫 조각을 건넨다. 다가오는 정규 앨범은 트랙마다 각기 다른 음악적 색채와 주제로 세공한 챕터로 구성되어 있다. 모든 챕터는 이를 대표하는 타이틀곡이 존재하고, 순차적으로 하나씩 싱글 컷 될 예정이다.
빛이 굴절되어 섬세하게 펼쳐지며 아름다운 스펙트럼을 이루듯, 음악의 조각들이 하나씩 더해지며 깊이 있게 “청하”를 그려갈 예정이다.
마지막 챕터의 타이틀곡을 공개하며 완성되는 첫 정규앨범을 기대하며, 그녀가 건네는 음악의 첫 조각을 설레는 마음으로 음미해 볼 시간이다.
[청하 Pre-Release Single #1 [Stay Tonight]]
Stay Tonight의 화자의 어조는 기존 곡이 품고 있던 화법과는 사뭇 다른 온도를 띠고 있다. 마음을 묻고, 때론 아쉬워하며, 스스로를 깨워야 하는 시간을 지나, 회화의 조각을 하나씩 맞춰가며 개화한 모습은 시간의 흐름조차 흩어진 어둠 속에서도 상대에게 머무르라고 제안할 만큼 자아의 색이 짙어졌다.
이번 곡은 섹션마다 하우스 장르가 여러 갈래로 변주하며 입체적으로 음상을 그려간다. 하프와 피아노 리프가 환상적인 분위기를 고조시키며 인트로를 장식하고 벌스부터 더해지는 세련된 베이스 라인과 리듬이 곡의 중심을 탄탄하게 채워간다.
드롭과 코러스 섹션에 더해지는 거친 베이스 사운드, 소울풀한 피아노, 겹겹이 더해지는 신디사이저와 밀도 높은 보컬은 곡을 가파르게 클라이맥스로 이끈다.
노래의 단어들은 사랑의 테마를 내포하고 있지만, 손을 뻗어 사로잡고 싶은 대상은 이 앨범을 즐기고 있는 모든 분입니다. Runaway or Stay Tonight.

She honestly never fails to amaze me I could swear she was born to be a soloist she just has that captivating personality and style her movement are something unreal I swear every gesture and hand movement god I don't know how to explain it.

Luna tia completely agree. There are many talented K-pop artists, but not everyone is made to be a soloist. For this generation, I think she is definitely one of the most outstanding soloist in the industry.

Luna tia -- Over time I learned to appreciate the skills and talents idols have don’t get me wrong I appreciate them, but there’s something so captivating and special that Chungha has that makes her stand out to me in an industry with such gifted people. She might seem like the average k-pop soloist to anyone in the kpop community but to me, I can see the hard work and the passion through the screen, she’s got that emotional string that I feel like a lot of idols need to learn from. She’s far from average in my eyes and she deserves all the praises she gets.

Her company and her crews like stylist, make up artist, music producer are really doing stellar jobs as well that complete chungha to another level. Id say shes both lucky and very skilled. Kind of like Ariana Grande where the song/performance and overall concept match perfectly with the singer.

This type of dancing is voguing and it's not just poses but the specialty in this dance are the representations seen on every movement especially the hands. Everything must be showcased perfectly and also the timing is very important. This is art. This is Kim Chung Ha and her team. WOW

i watched a few of Chungha's choreos, and what i love about it the most is that most of the time her dancers don't feel like "furniture" to just be there for background purposes. Chungha's songs choreos feel like it's a big dance number in a musical - yes, she IS the main character, but everyone is is important as well

A true queen that appreciating her dancers so much. I love how she treats them and respect their work. She doesn’t want them to be called “back” up dancers because she knows how much they spend their efforts. Also she was also a dancer before her debut. Even in this comeback she puts them in front and stayed their back. Just a professional artist👏🏻👏🏻👑

idk about everyone else but when i watch this piece, i don’t feel like it’s a “ choreography for idols “ but rather a choreography for a dance performance... if that makes sense. it’s not simple and it’s super detailed and requires a lot of skill. plus the sheer size of the group is insane + being able to pull of such visually appealing formations in an idol performance... masterpiece me thinks

Hey, street dance student here! I totally agree with you. My first impression of this choreography is that it is totally reminescent of competition pieces I've seen performed by dance crews... It's an amazing example of vogue performance, and at KPop, at that. It's simply amazing.

이 안무 볼 때마다 느끼는데 남댄분들은 부드러움에서 나오는 우아함이 느껴지고 여댄분들은 같은 부드러움인데 절도와 파워가 더 느껴지고 갓청하는 그냥 미쳤어 본새나요 분명 배경도 그냥 안무실이고 모두 검정색으로 맞추고 갓청하도 흰색으로 맞췄는데 왜이리 컬러풀하고 반짝반짝 빛나는 느낌이 매번 드는지 신기할세..

really really happy that her choreography for this comeback was catering the dance genre of Waacking (her genre of dancing even before) and vogue. it was really evident. I was really shookt by how they were able include the "dip" move and give it a twist to be able to match the attack of the song. This made me really appreciate chungha more. she really does give back a lot and does not forget her roots in dancing. She gives credit and exposure to the dancers who taught and helped her along the way. Kudos to the choreographer, he/she really did a great job. Thank you chungha and dancers for giving justice to this dance genre.

You can see all the choreography behind the scenes on Dancer Rian (one of the choreographer's) channel on youtube! She's also in this video as a dancer :) She also choreographed almost all of Chungha's choreographies so far, minus Rollercoaster I think?

@@teapotlily Yeah, I actually searched for the choreographer after commenting here. Thanks! I saw the original choreography video as well. Rian really did a great job for this comeback. kudos to her! hope that choreographers of pieces like this or even like other choreographers for other groups should be credited at the end of the video, even if it's just a 2-second exposure of their name in their dance practice video. It will actually make a whole lot of difference. Not only will they be able to expose their craft but as well make name for themselves even outside the dance community. This will help them with their livelihood as well since this is their work. I'm a dancer myself so I know how hard it is to earn money in the field of performing arts unless you're well known and have connections. I know that Chungha knows how difficult it is to be a dancer and she experienced it first hand that is why she really takes good care of them and give importance to their craft. even I was touched and grateful when I heard that she took her dancer friends as her backup for years now. Korea should actually make more shows like "Hit The Stage" which Chungha participated in before, It highlighted and gave spotlight not only for the artist but the dancers and the choreographers. I as a dancer was really grateful for shows like that because it showed how dancing is not just "dancing".

아무리 봐도 이 곡의 무대는 역대급이다. 곡도 좋지만, 보깅을 기반으로 한 군무를 예술의 경지로 끌어올렸다 해도 과언이 아니지 않을까. 실제 방송에서 자주 보지 못한 무대라서 너무나 아쉽다.

I'm impressed with how powerful this dance is. It's obviously feminine, but not effeminate. It's strong, but not masculine. It demands the attention without strong-arming you into anything. And it naturally focuses you on CHUNG HA rather than any of the other dancers, who form the background of the dance. They're the mandala, and she is the Buddha at the center. It's artistic, beautiful, and really well thought out. I can only imagine how much time and hard work went into creating it.

I personally think that CHUNG HA herself is feminine yet not effeminate, and she shows that strength doesn't always have to be manly. And I guess that the ones who show who they are by their music or performances are not only just singers or performers, but artists.

It's definitely effeminate! It takes a lot of inspiration from Vogue Fem which was mainly pioneered by gay men and trans women in the 90s. Vogue Fem is centered around graceful femininized movements, and the "Stay Tonight" dance has all 5 elements of vogue: duckwalk (3:13), catwalk (2:28, 3:01), hands (1:28, 2:20), floorwork (0:03, 0:51, 1:44), and spins/dips (3:16). Effeminate means a male having feminine characteristics. So the dance is feminine when someone who identifies as a woman does it, and effeminate when someone who identifies as a man does it. Effeminate isn't the next level up from feminine, it just means someone who is not a woman being/appearing feminine. Prefix ef- means 'like', femina means female, and suffix -ate means 'the appearance or characteristics of'.

From a dancer's perspective, her control is amazing down to the tip of her fingers. On top of that, her amazing stage presence. She dances so clean and beautifully and unlike any other kpop idol ive seen before. Fascinating!

don't be fooled by the simple looking hand movements, this dance is HARD, we stan elegance :) EDIT: voguing is a very difficult style to properly execute, the moves may seem easy to replicate but lack of proper execution will lead to you looking stiff when this style is meant to look elegant and fluid

So we just gonna ignore the fact that the guys SLAYED this comeback dance and are POWERFUL??? Also Chungha is so humble. She gives the backup dancers a break and has an amazing connection with them like Sunmi. The girls are beautiful and amazing is this comeback and just give off the vibe ya know. Edit: My apologies, I forgot Chungha does not like her backup dancers being called "backup dancers " and instead of Dancers. Im sorry for my mistake i will remember it

Yeah Chungha's great but I'm pretty sure the dance break being given to the backup dancers were the choreographers call. I watched the story video and the original version of the choreo. She's also a backup dancer in this video(: 3:05 she the one on the floor "front right of Chungha" (our left) with the Nike symbol.

진짜 청하 안무는 노래만 들었을 땐 어떤 안무가 나올지 예상이 안 됐는데 안무 딱 보는 순간 너무 찰떡이라서 할 말을 잃게된다 이 안무 말고 다른 안무는 상상 할 수 없을 정도로 오졌다 오졌어

Imma just come out and say this. I’m a general fan of Chungha, but I’ve been a fan of Kpop for 10 years now. This may be one if the best choreographies I’ve ever seen in the genre. Definitely the best I’ve seen for a soloist, which is saying a lot. I’m so glad this showed up as an ad on another video I was watching, or I may have missed it completely!

I love that one of her dancers choreographed this song with another dancer who specializes in vogue. So a lot of detail and care was put into this dance. Which we can clearly see with all the precise hand movements and the musicality of the dance itself.

still think this is THE most beautiful, elegant and well coreographed dances in kpop. It's not even as easy as it looks, they make it look incredibly smooth but even the "easier" parts are still that kind of moves that maybe anyone could do but actually look good only if a professional does them.

장담할 수 있어 청하 2020년 곡들 스테이투나잇, 플레이, 드림오브유는 몇 년 후에 크게 재조명될것같음.. 청하 진짜 독보적으로 새로운 시도 엄청 많이 하고 전부 압도적으로 소화해서 정말 좋은 의미로 시대를 뛰어넘었어... 솔직히 2020년 곡들은 이전 케이팝향기 물씬 나는 롤러코스터, 벌써 12시에 비해 히트는 많이 못 쳤지만 이렇게 새로운 시도를 많이 주었다는 거 자체에 크게 의의가 있고 나중에 충분히 아주 크게 다시 주목을 받을 수 있다고 봄 청하같은 가수가 정말 앞으로도 더 있을까 싶다 단순히 춤 잘 추고, 노래 잘 하는 게 끝이 아니라 자신의 능력을 최대치로 끌어 올리면서 항상 새로운 시도를 하는 청하가 너무 멋있어 정말 유일무이해 청하는 제 2의 누구도 아니고 앞으로도 제 n의 청하는 없을듯 청하의 새로운 도전이 케이팝 장르에 큰 변화와 충격을 줬다고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도.. 청하가 어떤 곡을 내든 어떤 시도를 하든 나는 청하의 도전을 언제나 응원해💚💙💜

honestly been thinking a lot of idols who haven't made it and decided to be a backup dancer instead because there's a lot of backup dancers that's gorgeous af. like you can see some backup dancers who you can't take your eyes off sometimes.

Chungha prefers to call them dancers rather than backup dancers! Which is super great of her to push and I totally agree with you. Some companies have their trainees dance for their other artists too

alot of the dancers are actually very popular on their own, loveran is there and she's known for vouging and lachica is a dance group on its own, both have a big following and is entirely seperated from idols but they usually work together! if you wanna know more about them i suggest watching street woman fighter because its how i found them:)

I remember an episode of Prod 101 when one of the instructors were like "Chungha is going to leave a mark in dance in Korea", and I could not agree more! Chungha out here incorporating drag influences in her work and I am HERE for it. For real, she seems to put a lot of thought in her work and I am genuinely excited for whatever she might contribute towards the future

@@alyssagreen9822 I think it's because they are dancing solo. They need a break. For groups, you don't have to be "on" all the time because the camera isn't on you, so you can do simpler moves and "take a break". Chungha and Sunmi are dancing the WHOLE song. Giving their dancers a dance break also gives them an actual break to catch their breath.

I think no one can do it because we don't look only on the dance but at the face and emotions too. Everything is soooo important so it is just impossible to do something like she or others did. And it is harder when it comes to Chungha

for those who don't know the choreography was done by Rian and Ran and they showed the choreography to Chungha and Chungha made changes to the choreography. Chungha suggested to change the dance break in the choreography.

경이롭다 이렇게 안무짜신 안무가 님도 대단하고 다같이 합 맞춰서 예쁘게 완성한것도 멋지고 카메라 촬영해주신 분도 예사롭지 않음. 가끔 해외 방송에서 한국 가수 무대 나올 때마다 비춰야 할 곳 안 찍고 애먼 곳 찍어서 아쉬웠는데 우리 나라 사람들 정말 재주많고 노력가들인듯!!
