The Harbor Church is one of the smallest churches in Ventura, CA., yet arguably they do the most to help the homeless. Each day, Harbor Church opens its doors to the homeless, providing: daily chapel services, worship music, Bible studies and prayer. They also engage the homeless through pastoral counseling. They also offer daily breakfast and lunch, hot showers, clothing and laundry facilities to those in need.
Because they help the homeless each day, the City of Ventura has ordered the church to close its doors during the week. Neighbors have been complaining to the city because they hate seeing homeless walk past their houses. They've filed complaints with city about the homeless behaving poorly in the neighborhood. But when asked to provide specifics or point out the individual that behaved poorly, neighbors are mysteriously mute. Enoch Magazine discovered The Harbor Church 4 years ago and has helped them with video needs ever since.

And then within 4 years later, the problems got to a head with the Aloha Steakhouse murder by Jamal Jackson. This city doesn't care at all to resolve the issues....and its terrible.

The city of Ventura and the Harbor Church went to court over the closure of the homeless ministry. The case went to the 9th circuit court of appeals and the church won based on the argument that serving the homeless was their religious right. But the church decided to move to nearby Oxnard where they are now serving the community of migrant workers there. The Harbor Church itself was bought by the city and they bulldozed it to sell the land for housing. I served there from 2011 -2014 when this video was made. The ministry changed the lives of hundreds of people. Amen.

It IS not just a right, but a duty, to serve those in need, among which homeless people. What a shameless town Ventura is. They could have sat around the table and look for ways to help diminish any problems. Instead, they took them to court. Heartless people. Thank God for the many saved and helped during those years of service.

So Joel Olsten closes his doors to Hurricane Harvey victims because he doesn't want to get mud on his church's brand new carpet and nobody bats an eye, but when a church lovingly opens it's doors to the homeless and gives them refuge, the freaking cops get involved. It's such a twisted world we are living in these days. I bet most of these people helping out were not being paid and were doing this out of the love in their hearts. It's absolutely apauling that we are not spotlighting this as an example of grace, mercy, and integrity rather than having their first reaction being "SHUT THEM DOWN!" I'm sorry, but it angers me. However, I am glad that we have a church like yours to help the homeless in Ventura. I am in Oxnard and I see the homeless problem first hand as well, It's really tough to see and I help as much as I personally can. My mother instilled the values and virtue in my heart to lend a helping hand to those in neeed. The other day I bought lunch and went home and I was looking forward to that lunch, I saw a homeless guy about my age on my street.... I felt guilty holding a nice hot meal while this guy was sitting there without food. I took the meal I was lookign forward to and gave it away. I looked out the window about 10 mins later and he was in a different spot eating the meal I gave and I felt so much happiness in my heart knowing he doesn't have to go a day without food. I know you guys feel the same guilt and the same feeling of responsibility. That's why I know you are doing this out of the goodness of your hearts. I commend you for your efforts.

I'm sorry to you folks. I am and I hope you will relocate to a great place. I imagine since you shared a fence with a kindergarten class and along with good people, some violent felons, sex offenders and drug abusers use your facilities , was a huge factor in why it was best you continue your wonderful services elsewhere. Charity is very important..the safety of many children seems very important too... anything can happen anywhere but you up the odds like this...I am truly sorry it has disrupted your services . I know that your passion for helping these people and your faith in God will help you continue doing what you love. I wish the powers that be ( money wise ) city/state would help with these issues more but alas, they are not as kind as you folks.... I hope to see your new place in a better place soon. peace and love

I agree. I have total sympathy for the homeless but honestly speaking, some of them are potentially dangerous (not all). I spent two months on the streets myself. I met the working poor, the mentally ill, convicted felons, and some sexual offenders. It runs the gamut; the risks are there unfortunately.

I'm sorry but as a RESIDENT (FYI under 18 years of age) living just a few streets away from this church I am beyond tired of getting harassed by the outside behavior of the homeless who go to this church. I ride my bike and sometimes have to walk to my high school and I get more and more scared of going because EVERY time I see a homeless person walking to the church they try and stop me, ask if I want a cigarette, and also have made many SEXUAL gestures and comments towards me. As I try every time to ignore these people I encounter, I sometimes cannot handle knowing what could have happened to me, like they could have taken me or hit me as they all seem out of line in their behavior and do NOT seem friendly as if they actually attend the church (which the church does not require that you attend the church to get food)....I sometimes go home and CRY because of my safety being threatened and knowing that this church is next to a elementary and preschool kids whos safety I want to protect. This church HAS been given other alternatives to provide for the homeless, my favorite is to get a food truck or even just a van and transport pre-made food to a nearby homeless shelter, AS I have been told that the owner of this church has multiple 'luxury' cars....I am certain that this is a doable alternative. So 'pray' that I can sleep tonight because of me myself being harassed by homeless that are attracted to my nearby church. So NO shame on closing those doors, SHAME on the church by NOT following as close or strict of guidelines as fellow city churches do, as this church does not do background checks and etc etc.

I was born in Oxnard in '71, and lived in Ventura (Port Hueneme and Ojai too) until we left in 2002..haven't been back for a visit since 2004...from watching a lot of videos about the area...seems like quite a bit has changed...being a teen in the 80s, even then, Ventura wasn't too big on helping...

+FORMETOKNOWONLY We did want the church. Many did. Our town is overwhelmed with homeless people. I can show you videos of thirty plus years trying to help the mysterious surge of homeless that came in 1978 and never stopped. So always some resent it. Teenagers attack them. It's not their fault, it' our economic policies to always keep people unemployed. Except for Nixon and Obama who wanted everybody prosperous.

What we, as supporters of this outreach should do, is make OUR presence known in that neighborhood. After all, we're not homeless, so they can't drive us away. Who's open for a show of force...maybe hundreds or thousands of us? Let's fill up their sidewalks, park and streets. Let the real Venturans voices be heard in support of those less fortunate.

I say that maybe the location of this Church next to a school and park is the perfect location for this outreach. It seems to me the opponents, as parents, are doing a piss poor job of teaching COMPASSION to their children. What they want to do is insulate their children from the realities of the world (OH, those people are so sad...I'm glad they aren't in OUR neighborhood). Those homeless come to get a meal, some services that take a bunch of red tape and paperwork to accomplish through city and county services, and they get their souls and spiritual selves ministered to...something the opponents, I would say, are in much greater need of than the homeless, based on this evidence. Why don't you NIMBY's get involved, and try to help steer the outreach, rather than outright shut it down? Maybe instead of your kids coming home and getting on the computer or burying their faces and thumbs on Twitter and Facebook or escaping into some mind numbing violent video game, stay at home Mom should take her kids to volunteer at the church. Maybe, just maybe, they'll turn out better than Mom and Pop, who are more worried about their property values and their green lawn than they are about the least of those among us.

Viewers, please ask yourself why was the church shut down? It wasn't stated. I myself am a christian and I now understand why they had to close the church. The video only show one side and that is shameful. They close the church because of it location. The church is located near an elementary school and a playground. Kids lives are as risk. Must they wait until something bad happens before some action take place? I am not saying all homeless are bad but there are few that are bad. The church should listen to the neighbourhood voices and not make them look like the bad ones. The church shouldn't only focus on helping the helpless only, but helping and taking care of it neighbourhood and making it safe. Nope, I think it was the church that had failed in this case. They thought of only what they were doing and forget to think how it would affect the neighbourhood. They just need to find a better location. Maybe, this had happen for a good cause. Maybe this had to happen for them to go and search for a better location where they would help double the amount of people, especially the neigbourhood. When one door close, another will open. This church had lost it faith too quickly.

Cities and states make huge money from the government for having homelessness. The jails benefit. The tax payer pays $40,000 to $125,000 to house a homeless person in jail. Makes huge revenue for the state, city and towns. Cincinnati makes $224,000 per black child they put in jail. So, the city doesn't want to heal the homeless or mentally ill. I recommend getting them off the grid.... FreeHousingCommunity.info

Ok, I will comment because very few people if any know what was happening here. The so called poor homeless were breaking into people's houses ,sleeping in their yards and crapping in their yards it was also attracting people with criminal life styles also the school isn't near by its connected to it. This place was located right smack in the middle of a neighborhood. These bums were dealing drugs in the bathroom at the park which is also connected to the church. That church was originally built for the people of this area not bums who don't want to earn a living but expect everything to be given to them.

That disgusting how people are selfish, this church just wanted to help people in need, but the people around the church was disgusted by thse people who was doing a good deed. Annd prefer to not return to the church, and comolaint to the cops and chase homeless away just because they doesn't like them and do not want to help them. Because of that they had no church, and the homeless are not allowed in this neihbohood because these people won't welcome them in their neighbohood, that show how people are heartless and cold, i do not like the selfish people.

I have been homeless in Ventura, and can say with no regret Harbor Church is not what you think you are supporting. This is one of the reasons I will not go there, ( went once ). These people in this neighborhood have reason to be concerned! These same people you see in this video are drug dealers, and users. They do not want to change and are happy with what they do. Hiding behind this church is a shame. If I am wrong then here is how it can be proven. First and for most use live scan! ( the church refused ) Second require a drug test, even on those that claim or work for this organization. The true reason they were closed is they refused live scan to protect the neighborhood! Live scan, will show convicted sex offenders! Now would you want a pedophile in your neighborhood?
