I immediately subscribed to your channel after drawing some inspiration...I'm yet to begin this journey of ABLETON 10 LIVE..I know it's going to be a blessing to our church and to me at the end... Behringer basic in ear works fine!!! I recently heard Darlene Zschech describe the 'thing' we stand on at the front of the church .... the "platform". She encourages not calling it a 'stage'. Stages age are for performance. Platform is to be seen so Zacchaeus doesn't have to climb up a tree. It sounds silly to differentiate, but really helpful to change the culture away from performing.

Hello Can you do a quick video on, jumping around ( chorus, verse, bridge, chorus) flawlessly? Like if you finish the song, then the worship leader spontaneously decides to sing the bridge again and you want to use the tracks. It would be great!!!! Thanks!!!!

Joseph H yesssssss please that’s the biggest question I have too! @@jojothe2nd607 If you use arrangement view like this example, then you could put in markers for the start of each section and then map the important ones to a controller of some sort. Would probably work quite well if you had a controller with a grid of buttons like a launchpad or similar and used each column of buttons for the different main sections and then a row for each song. Most people who jump around between songs as far as I can tell use session view though. Ian McIntosh from Jesus Culture has a course on it which I think is pay as you feel at the moment which explains how to set it up using session view.

Hey Jake, I was really excited when I saw this. We’ve been using ableton for years and use it in the session view but we learned just enough how to make it work without ever improving it. I think your method would be a huge benefit to us! I will say watching this video, I kept waiting for the how to’s for each step. Every time I thought you would go there, it was on to the next step of what you could do. Any chance of a part 2 of this coming out that is more how to focused? Some things that would benefit me watching is bringing those song templates in to a set list. What are your steps for that? Since you use ableton in arrangement mode how do you set your midi to fire song 1, then 2 and so on? That’s something really easy to do in session view but a little less intuitive in arrangement view. What’s your process for creating midi cues and writing those in to a song? I noticed the labeling at the top of your timeline from song to song, how did you create that? I guess if there were time for you to screen record creating a set list from start to finish one week that would be amazing! Hope this doesn’t come across as griping, because this is great content! I could just personally use a little bit more how to with these steps to wrap my brain around them! Thanks for all you do.

I appreciate all the work you're putting in to helping out us worship leaders! Even though the current standard is Ableton Live, I think there are plenty of other options that should be able to do the same functions, like Bitwig Studio. The problem I'm running into is that 99% of the information for performance DAW software (documentation/tutorials) is for recording, or EDM performance. I really wish software companies would have more resources on how to use their products in a performance/backing track setting. I'm studying your workflow, and want to eventually try to do the same things with Bitwig, because it runs in Linux (which is what I use). There is *no* info on how to do this, so I'm resorting to watching Ableton stuff and trying to cross-apply it.

Awesome video Jake, really helpful. I'm working at a really small church with little to no budget (around 50 people), I have managed to implement in ear monitoring and we are currently implementing pads and looking to introduce a Click Track soon. We are currently using OpenLP for lyrics and OBS for livestreaming as they are both free opensource programs that do the job effectively. It may be a struggle to introduce Ableton Live for automation (£250 for standard) as well as getting a seat licence for ProPresenter (approx £280). On top of that I would have to introduce a mac system to effectively run both (2 base model M1 Mac minis £699 each). So I am looking at £2000+ upgrade to a system that doesn't even have a digital sound desk yet (Allen & Heath PA20-CP) (also Zero budget). I honestly really think that Ableton Live paired with automation for Lyrics is the best way forward, but I may have to accomplish it by taking it one very small step at a time (over the course of a few years).

you've got me sold on Ableton Live - started using this for my church several months ago, got the churchfront pads as well. I like arrangement view the way you present it and that's how I've been using it. My question is, how do you deal with a group of songs with different time signatures. This has been a pain for me. It does not seem automatic that time signatures paste in. I could have a set with mostly 4/4 but one 6/8 or even a few songs that go between 3/4 and 4/4 for a few measures at a time (It Is Well or Death Was Arrested if my memory is working) Jake - How do you deal with these time signature changes being pulled into your set-list?

Can't you just run the computer to the X32 using a USB cable rather than an interface? I am doing that now and it allows me to send multiple outputs to the FOH so they can mix the pads and ambient sounds real-time. If there's a reason to go through the interface instead could you educate me on what we need to change?

So...with all this planned out system, how do you allow for following the leading of the Father in worship? How do you change songs or go back to another song or do something unplanned because you are lead to do so while worshiping? It seems to me that I would become a slave to the program. Instead of it serving me, I would be serving it. I'm not criticizing it at all, just not sure how you retain any flexibility.
@Churchfront

@@Churchfront Yes, I did.. My question still remains. It's not spontaneity if you have to pre-map locators. I've been leading worship for almost 30 years. In regards to the arrangement of a particular song, I often do songs differently than I did it last time or repeat a chorus or skip a verse depending on what I'm being lead to do. Sometimes the Holy Spirit shows me connections between songs or verses that I've never seen before. With a system like this, there is no ability to follow where I'm lead. Again, please understand that I'm not criticizing your process if it works for you. There are a lot of reasons I would love to be able to use some of these tools. I started using pads based on your videos. They have been phenomenal! I would love to be able to use automated slides, but the lack of flexibility is a no go for me. Along with the distraction of remembering exactly how I set up a given song. (not to mention having a computer voice talking in my head during worship) I would love to use the patches from SundaySounds. But alas, they are only available to less than 4% of computer users worldwide because only Macs can be used. I am planning on purchasing Ableton live with a midi keyboard. Your video on that and Sunday Sounds was great and super helpful. Thanks for what you are doing. I love your passion and energy. And on another note, EasyWorship is phenomenal, and I can teach anyone to use it in about 2 minutes. So that's super helpful when I'm dealing with volunteers and when leading worship in different settings and countries, and don't usually have trained help.

What if the band gets off and you have to kill the click. Do you lose your lyric and lighting cues?

I'm a reluctant learner here just trying to understand the other side. I have observed worship ministry being transformed into a cyborg over the years but unfortunately, it seems like the training wheels are staying on and the hand-holding will never stop. We are the karaoke ministry now. Now that we are here, I want to do my due diligence to be an expert even in tools I find superfluous, arbitrary, and unnecessarily expensive, both in terms of time and money. So I wonder if you'll help me out with a question or three. I notice you say "eliminate distracting mistakes" as a benefit of using Ableton. In over 20 years of leading worship in churches of all sizes, I have never seen mistakes as distracting as those created by automation. Can you give me some examples of the distracting mistakes that happen without Ableton that are as distracting as having to stop all the tracks and start over? It's like pulling the curtain away in Wizard of Oz, isn't it? The body of Christ is immediately sucked out of worship when they realize just how much of what is happening on stage is not happening on stage. Do you think team members are being shaped into servants as much as they are being programmed and aimed at the goal? How is playing off a worship set as your team giving their best okay when the best sounds coming off stage are purchased from Multitracks? Isn't this akin to "stolen valor?" You keep mentioning "excellence" but it's not your team's excellence is it? When you enhance what you're able to do with tracks recorded by professional musicians, then it's actually someone else's excellence, and possibly your excellence at using an overly complicated program, isn't it? Please excuse my cynical tone. As grumpy as I may sound, I am looking to be proven wrong. But if I'm going to believe being proven wrong, I'm going to have to apply pressure. No stance is worth having if it can't hold up against intense scrutiny.
