The Carcano series of rifle is easily most notable for the JFK assassination, I however love the TS model in the M28 Tromboncino configuration as used by the medic class in Battlefield Five. Today I take a swing at trying my hand at my own configuration of a scout rifle setup using a M91 TS Carcano rifle.

This allows for you to use a sabot, i.e. pieces of plastic surrounding the bullet that fall away in flight, to fit the bullet snugly within the over bore barrel. The Carcano's prime was before WWI. It was adopted in 1891. The CIA used them to a great extent. They used them to arm anti-communists in Greece and shipped a bunch to Israel after rechambering them for the 7.92x57mm cartridge. The reason was we supplied our "friends" with weapons that couldn't be traced to us. Winchester produced tons of ammo without any identifying markings.

They really are superb milsurp rifles. The craftsmanship on them is so nice that if you were to buy something similar made today you'd probably be looking at a $5,000 rifle. That being said, as nice as they are, they were only used by the Swiss military and never saw combat anywhere. I think that's the reason they aren't more popular than they are. As crappy as the Mosin-Nagant and Carcano may be, they were at least used in actual combat.

My dad was a HUGE JFK conspiracy guy when I was a kid until he visited Dealy plaza and so how small the place really is. I visited in 2013 and stood in the closest spot to the shooting window. Looking down on the X’s on the street is was horrible sad. The security guard comes up to me and says “sad isn’t it?” I said “yup” he said “way closer than you thought it was huh?” I said “yup” he was the furthest shot was something like 147ft (I forget the exact number) but it’s not 80yds. He said “you could do that with a deer rifle, right” I said “I could do it with my 1911” he chuckled. I think it was one shooter. The grass knoll is actually a horrible shot based on slopes and visibility. I absolutely believe there was a conspiracy since it’s just too big of a job and there needs a lot of information but that window in that building is a very simple shot and great location. Shit on me all you want but go stand there and it’ll break your brain to see how easy that shot actually is to make.

I just read your post. Then went to Google maps. 147 is about right for the first shot close in. You can see 80 yards maybe for the last shot as the car speeds up at the end of dealy plaza.

I have a 1937/38 6.5 carcano and what i think is up is they were sighted in like 200 yards high i was shooting a water bottle from 60 feet or so and i was shooting at the ground probably and i was aiming straight towards the bottle but i was aiming at the dirt 30-40 feet in front of me and i hit it in about 6 or 7 shots but i honestly love it, its got a super percussive blast and a huge muzzle flash and it can easily be shot in one arm and it was probably $200 bucks for one with a cracked stock but it works great

The most important part of getting accuracy from the Carcano is using the correct diameter projectiles. Ian at Forgotten Weapons spoke about that in one of his videos. The original Italian military cartridges had a bullet with a .267 diameter versus the more common .264 diameter for most 6.5mm cartridges. This slight but important diameter difference causes accuracy issues when reloads are used, and the original diameter projectiles or ammo are difficult to acquire these days. FYI, Lee Harvey Oswald had the correct sized projectiles because he purchased surplus ammunition with the rifle, to the best of my understanding. However, don't believe me, go look it all up for yourselves and that way you can save yourselves the trouble of typing nasty replies.

The reason why your group sizes are so big and weird is because the Carcano 6.5 projectile is based around a .267 projectile, while all western 6.5 projectiles are .264 inch. So your projectiles are kinda rattling down the barrel.

They're great shooters imo. I picked up a 1938 Brescian and did a complete detailed strip/clean and installed the wolff service pack in it. After slugging the barrel it came out to .264", I got lucky. The beautiful part was since I reload for the 6.5 creedmoor, I used the same bullets for the carcano with great results using the 120 grain weight bullets. I firmly believe the 6.5 carcano was the 6.5 creedmoor of its time imo.

I was going to buy a Carcano M38 or M91 cavalry carbine milsurp rifle..as they are still for sale EVERYWHERE here in Canada - not just for the low price.. but for the historic value with it being the rifle that painted JFK's brains all over his wife. The Real reason I never bought one.. was the 6.5x52 ammo.. fearing that the ammo would one day be hard to find after a while.. and the price of ammo being around $160 for 100rds of 139gr FMJ - you are still better off with a much more reliable and more accurate SKS here in Canada and 100rds of 7.62x39 can be bought for around $50!
