This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Marcus Tullius Cicero's work On Friendship, specifically on his discussion of a position on friendship that views it as unnecessary and even detrimental for the good life, the idea being that friendship requires us to care for others and to be involved in their affairs, whereas genuine happiness would be freedom from care and troubles.

This is one of the harder lectures for myself. On one side of the case, look into the studies of the effects of solitary confinement on prisoners. There is evidence that humans generally need at least a minimum of social contact (why...?). ON the other, if a life very limited in time, if one wants to learn, one must create free time with untroubled mind to study and think. You are the contradiction to this. You appear to be very engaged with people, and yet I think you know more about philosophy than I do, and thus may show my lack of talent. Between commuting, teaching and working out and sleeping, there seems little time in my day for the focus and study I want to apply. If one catches bad habits from those around one, then one should isolate one from others. There is no one who values philosophy in my lived world, and it has been a small flame that I have sheltered and protected for much of my life. If I live as I see many seem to be trying to live around me, I should be trying to earn as much money as I can, leveraging collateral in order to buy status displaying toys and vacations. I should be competing for positions that exercise more power, to display my competence and can justify my social standing by the amount of my wage ( a determinate and finite measure). A life like this would be misery for me. I am happiest when I am researching, and thinking, and having insights. This is predominately a solitary activity. I have at least one real friend by the way.

I did my time earlier - mostly in grad school, and as a young prof - studying a lot of hours per day, and being a bit less gregarious. Now, much of what I do is essentially applying and communicating about philosophy

I don't think he refutes the claims, just that he chooses it is worth it. But here the problem is that what he describes is not virtuous in itself. Having friends is like having money or whatever else. It does not mean anything in itself, and is not a prerequisite to virtue. Just like someone can be courageous without getting into danger all the time to prove it. Those that do often ends up being reckless. Same goes with counting your number of friends as a sign of virtue. If anything, it is more often than not the opposite of the truth. I met people like Timon, but also people like Cicero, and I don't find any of them palatable, but to choose between the two, I would probably choose Timon. He is less likely to stab me in the back or gossip.

I think you're probably drawing WAY too much out of one portion of the text, and arguing with someone who's not Cicero or me. Good luck with your studies

The Timons I have known have all been expert backstabbers. It goes with the misanthropic territory. There's a kind of perverse, sadistic element to it. To gain pleasure from seeing another injured by those unexpected knife-wounds.

@@mattgilbert7347 Timon wouldn't have anyone close enough to him to stab that person in the back
