Ronnie in Las Vegas hit us up with a great “opinion” question…it seems he has a friend that is always saying that “cigars are bad for you.” (Bet you haven’t heard THAT before…) But Ronnie enjoys the cigar hobby and wanted to know what we say to someone who has said something like that to us. Cigar Advisor’s Tommy Zman responds with his reply - controversial? Watch for yourself and YOU decide.

When you do something with joy and not out of addiction, it's a whole another universe of experience. If you can enjoy and relax with one cigar, one donut, one drink and not a pack/box/bottle, then the "harmful" becomes medicinal. Issue is, every anti smoking ad is about someone who's been overdoing it since they were in their teens. It's like saying, this man drank a bottle of wine a day and now his liver is shutting down at 60's, don't drink.

I like to look at cigar smoking like going outside on a sunny day. Everytime you go outside, you put yourself at risk of getting skin cancer. Its a slight risk, but still a risk. Now you could prevent this risk by staying inside all the time and never going outside or going in the light, but we decided to enjoy our lives and go outside. Similarly, you potentially put yourself at risk for cancer when you smoke a cigar, but wouldn't you rather enjoy it?

"Moderation is the key"... exactly! I'm sure eating a box of donuts every day is just as harmful as smoking a pack of cigarettes every day. With moderation, there is no addiction either, whether it's smoke, alcohol, etc.

I can't help but laugh when somebody tells me cigars are bad for me, when they themselves are riddled with chronic disease like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes because they can't quit shoveling excess refined carbohydrates into their mouths. Mix that with a life full of stress and sedentarism and they somehow still think I'M the unhealthy one?

Hmmm, so about ten years ago while still on active duty in the Army, I was seeing the “flight surgeon” for my annual physical. All was well and at the end I said, “Hey doc, how bad is smoking a cigar or two each week? He did fly bat an eye and said, “hope not too bad ‘cause I smoke a good Arturo Fuentes at least once a week.” True story!

well to smoke that much means that at an average of just 1 hour per cigar, he'd have to be with a cigar in his mouth non-stop unless he was eating or sleeping. I imagine holding anything in your mouth for that long is bout to give you cancer. There are people who have cancers from chipped teeth causing wounds in their mouths, and those wounds eventually turn cancerous.

I have recently taken cigars smoking, I was a 1pac a day smoker 15 yrs ago, and I saw a video on Cigar making and smoking and I really appriciated it and enjoyed what goes into making a good cigar and the effort and time, from seeds to you smoking it. It's like a fine wine, I don't really enjoy wine much, therefore I thought why not have some time out for yourself or with a friend possibily and enjoy 30 min to an hour for yourself endulging, life is too short to listen to all the BS.

I‘ve been accused of ruining my health by smoking 1 premium cigar weekly. I have a chill day for me, a cigar, a shot of mezcal and my dog. I do 2 hours of mountain biking daily, half an hour of calestenics and I ride my bike for commuting to my work and daily errands. Furthermore, I have a 14% of body fat and zero chronic diseases. In the other hand, the person that accuses me do at most 1 hour of excercise per week, is prediabetic and uses a car even to go to a convenience store 4 blocks away from home… at some point you just need to ignore nonsense and live your life. See where criticism comes from and you’ll find out either hypocrisy or cynicism.

I hear this all the time, even well-known publications have misinterpreted the study. The study was on mortality. The chance you'll die from those specific cancers or in general, not on the risk of simply developing those cancers commonly associated with cigar use. So a guy who has half his face removed from the cancer smoking too many cigars caused wouldn't be counted in a study only showing mortality. I'd like to see a similar study, but on just the factor increase of developing oral cancers in cigar smokers vs non-smokers, because oral cancer is a devil I don't care to dance with, whether it kills me or not. I'm hoping such a study is performed soon, because I'm enjoying about 10 per week.

"Clear scientific evidence exists, that on the questions of addiction, inhalation, mortality and youth access - each of which are the rational as to why congress passed the Tobacco Control Act - the data, studies and analysis are on the side of premium handmade cigars. I don’t like the comparison that other things are just as bad. I think people who say cigars are unhealthy imply that yes others things are bad but why stack more bad things on top. YES I don’t believe cigars are significantly unhealthy but I think we’re slightly taking their words out of context to be fair. Also to be fair, people should just leave me and my cigars alone.
@stephenolder4552
@stephenolder4552 9 ай бұрын
The reason for the comparison is to use against the person preaching to you. It's to point out others hypocrisy. It's not to deflect the fact that cigars are bad for you, but most people have some forms of vices that aren't good for them. If every time I see someone muching on junk food or drinking soda after soda I go up to them and preach on how unhealthy it is, I'm eventually going to be told where to go and how to get there and rightfully. So people need to get off their high horse unless they can really draw a strong thick line between them and the person they're judging, and most people can't.

I like cigars but unlike everyone in the comments I'm not in denial that they are obviously bad for me. You are naive if you don't realize the reason they relax you is because you are addicted to nicotine and withdrawal is uncomfortable. It takes over a month of not smoking for your body to go back to normal. I have random intrusive thoughts about smoking a cigar. Its obviously addictive... don't lie to yourself.

The Heatland Institute is the last place I would go for advise on my health! In the 1990s, the Heartland Institute worked with the tobacco company Philip Morris to attempt to discredit the health risks of secondhand smoke and to lobby against smoking bans. Since the 2000s, the Heartland Institute has been a leading promoter of climate change denial. It rejects the scientific consensus on climate change, and says that policies to fight it would be damaging to the economy. Hardly a credible source. I smoke cigars in great moderation and didn't start until my 60s so I have little concern. But if I were smoking daily or even weekly and started at a younger age I would do some research from credible sources. After doing that if you care about your health you will smoke infrequently or not at all.

What a fool. Of course it is bad for you. Yes moderation impacts however, look at the clinical studies one a week can still cause mouth, throat, gum cancer. I enjoy cigars and probably more than one a week but I realise the downside. Don't just look at the studies that tell you what you want to hear. Look at other professional data before you comment.
@jackchapo2011
@jackchapo2011 Жыл бұрын
My apologies, my comment was perhaps a little elevated. I was not referencing any studies on smoking one per week specifically. My reference was based on studies of cigar smoking (as a topic). There are plenty of discussion publications on Google Scholar with broad based outcomes. However, as an example, an older study by Shapiro et al, (extracting from 2008 Cancer Prevention Study II) found that infrequent cigar smoking men (noting it did not define 'infrequent') 30 plus years had elevated mortality risk for lung, oral cavity, larynx and esophagus cancer, even in observation records of less that one a day. Now, I will declare that, 100% of the detail I rely on or reference comes from Google Scholar and that can be noted as clinically selective, it is still neutral study content. It is up individual interpretation. I will continue to smoke the occasional cigar and recognise it is potentially not overly harmful. However, I think it somewhat close minded in limiting to opinions of someone puffing away while referring to himself in third person slang.
