CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Braddock (Russell Crowe) in desperate need for money, asks for help, and is given the last bit he needs from his manager Gould (Paul Giamatti).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true story of an athlete who achieved his greatest success against the most daunting odds of his life is brought to the screen in this historical drama. In the 1920s, James Braddock (Russell Crowe) from Bergen, NJ, was a promising contender in professional boxing; he had strength, spirit, and tenacity, but the combination of a serious hand injury and a 1929 defeat in a bout with light heavyweight champ Tommy Loughran sent his career into a serious tailspin. As Braddock's career in the ring dried up, the Great Depression put a stake through the heart of America's economy, and Braddock found himself working at the New York docks for pitiful wages as he tried to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and three children. Desperate for money, Braddock turned to his former trainer and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), who was unexpectedly able to scare up a bout for him, battling John Griffin at Madison Square Garden. While conventional wisdom had it that Braddock was too old, out of shape, and out of practice to have any chance of winning, he defeated Griffin, and continued beating his opponents with a powerful left hook that had been intensified by years of punishing dock work. In a nation desperate for good news, Braddock's surprising comeback became a tonic to struggling workers and unemployed people, and all eyes were on Braddock when in 1935 he took on powerful heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) in what was both literally and figuratively the fight of his life.

Gets me crying every time. People today have no idea how lucky we are. Also everyone should become financially literate because severe recessions and depressions can and will happen again. We'll get through it if we stick together. Capitalism is still the best system and there will be very big winners and others just scraping by. Capitalism provides the most opportunities over the long run.

Same. I can just about hold it up until then. But the fact he's so humble and decent he's apologizing to his friend FOR EMBARRASSING HIM (in his mind)... just shows you what a great man brung low Jimmy Braddock is. The deliberately undignified, choking sob of his voice just wrenches your heart out.

@Glitchfaction

thhheo henderson There is a difference between poor today and the poor of the depression. During the depression, men who wanted to work couldn’t find jobs. They were willing to do anything to make a few dollars for the family and felt ashamed by bread lines. A lot of today’s poor, are poor because they choose to be. Now this isn’t always the case. But to deny that there is a large faction of “poor people” in this country who would rather sit on HUD and EBT than work, would simply be ignorant.
@Glitchfaction
@Glitchfaction 4 жыл бұрын
Hasan Arif you’re insane is you think people are as willing to work today as they are during the Great Depression. And today we have options. You may not get the job you want, but you can get a job. If it doesn’t pay enough, you can work two jobs. Which is miserable but it’s work and in the end we do what we have to, to support our families. During the Great Depression there was no work. Men would line up for hours hoping to get to work for a few hours at some shifty pier or construction site. It’s not the same thing.

I've been there, went to social services to see if I could get some help because my rent got raised. I qualified due to income and the fact my daughter was just born, however; I was denied by the county because I worked too many hours a week. Eventually made it to the end of my lease but had to move back to my parents. Long story short, had a roommate who was responsible for a third of the rent, bailed on me 3 months into the one year lease. The county basically said, "You're poor enough to qualify, plus you have a child. Sorry, you work full time, we can't help you."

It may sound lame, but this is my personal favorite film moment. My father was an immigrant from Sicily and grew up eating mustard sandwiches. His dad died when he was six and he had to support his mom and three siblings at eight years old. He had the level of humility that Braddock has in this scene. It tugs on the heart strings.

This was, IMO, the greatest scene to ever come out of film-- and Russell Crowe gave it the emotion and quality it deserved. For a man to put down his pride and ask for a handout from a bunch of other men is in itself a massive feat which Crowe portrays perfectly. You can see in his face, in his voice, in his body language how difficult it is, the embarrassment of it, but most importantly you see his fight through that because keeping his family together is the only thing that truly matters. The courage and strength in that is nothing short of inspirational. And then when he sees his friend is there and he tearfully apologizes but the friend responds with a comradery unlike any other..... well the tears just flow during this scene I tell ya.

Considering the context of the boxing scenes, I personally don't see the Rocky Syndrome as a flaw. He was fighting for a lot more than just self pride and discovery. That was his previous career likely, now he's fighting for family and self worth. Its more about his family, and pushing pass his own limits. For example when he's not even upset about being a body and nothing more for his "one fight" deal. All he cares about is that he's going to get $250 bucks for his family and a decent send off for his career.

+guitta Dabe That's because the minimum wage used to be A LIVABLE wage. in the 1960's and 70's, minimum wage was equivalent to 30,000/year. Now you have to work 2 full times jobs to even come close to that on minimum wage. Why should people work 80 hour weeks for scraps?
@evanjohnson1299
@evanjohnson1299 4 жыл бұрын
@@Seitanic_panic you have now Idea how economics work. If there was no minimum wage at all would you work for $1/hr, I'm guessing not. What really matters is the prevailing market wage which is generally higher than the minimum. Right now very few people work at the min wage and those who do generally are young and on their first job and will shortly get a raise to move out of the minimum wage. Wages aren't based on what the worker thinks they need to live, it's based on what value the employers place on their skills, would you hire a high school drop-out to be a machinist or would you hire someone who went to school to be a machinist?

Evan Johnson the current pandemic has shown that those jobs you look down on are “essential” so spare me your bullshit about “not knowing how economics work”. Enjoy being a corporate bootlicker you soggy loaf of wonderbread.

@@Seitanic_panic the minimum wage was started as a way to force out black workers, anyone who doesn't have the skills to warrant an arbitrary wage minimum will be left out, the fact that a vast majority of people get paid more than the minimum wage is proof of it's uselessness. Why not set the minimum wage at $100/hr than all workers would be in much better positions. The answer no business could afford to pay that much and no one would have a job. You seem to distrust business but their motivations are crystal clear, what motivates government?

This great movie proved that the Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2005 missed big time by not giving this movie an Oscar for anything ! GREAT work by Russell Crowe, Paul Giamatti, Rene Z., Ron Howard the director. This movie in several spots moves me to tears. Great story about so many things. just POWERFUL!!!!! One of the things that made me love this movie was this scene. Many people can relate with this because of empathy , but whoever got in life trough moments like that, specially having to ask help for food or basic things, to other people, felt this scene in the flesh. Ive experienced that and that why I love this movie forever! Besides being a beautiful story!

Really like this scene. Was too young to understand it when i first saw it but it shows difficult it was in the depression and in that business. yes you could tell everyone there didn't know what to think or do. People were fighting for their lives in the great depression and especially in the business they were in where everyone was a "killer" you couldn't look soft or others would take advantage of you but at the same time you didn't want to look heartless. Jim knew that and he knew he was putting them in a tough position by asking. The first man stepping up to encourage/gave permission for the others who wanted to give to do so and forced those others who didnt want to give because it would make them look heartless. It shows the courage it took for Jim to ask and the courage it took for Joe and the first man to give.

Crowe and Giamatti do great here... but the score is what captures this moment... everyone here is saying they get teary eyed watching the part where he interacts with joe. But that’s when we here the score. Thomas Newman is a helluva composer and this and road to perdition are master pieces

I know exactly how it feels to have to ask for help. The bad luck I have, and having to beg makes it tough to swallow. It's one thing if I were a druggie or a Alcoholic. But' I'm neither one, and its rough, having to sleep in my jeep, every night. So' i cant even imagine what it was like back then.

You hate those who beg or are "bums"? Sure there are people who don't want to work and try shortcuts while the rest of us work. But, believe it or not, there really are people who don't have jobs, or do but are paid so little that they can't make ends meet. I don't usually wish bad things on people but maybe people who say things like "I hate bums" or the homeless or similar things should have a run of tough times themselves to see what it is like. Maybe then they would grow a heart and have some compassion. This is a story of one such person who, through circumstances and because he had at least rudimentary skills for which people were willing to pay to see displayed got out of his predicament. Not everyone is as fortunate. Besides being a boxing story, the hard times that many people have to go through, through no fault of their own, is one of the central themes of this movie.

i'm out here busting my ass and i feel put upon when people ask me for money...i have no respect for laziness and people who can't handle their lives...i'm struggling and making it out here, i don't want the added stress of someone begging me for money, bleeding on me with their problems...if i'm trying to relax in the bar or wherever they were after a hard day's work i don't want someone spoiling my good time with their problems...you're making excuses for people i'm sure it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy but it's not good for them, they listen to you and think they're entitled to a handout from everyone

Owen Daniels There is a real need to get people to again support themselves. There are people who seek help and those that don't. Chronic addicts and alcoholics, perhaps like those who might frequent the type of bars in which some "relax" can be a problem for themselves. and others. Besides getting angry about the real need that still exists among the many who do not feel entitled but who need and deserve help so they can again help themselves, perhaps those of us who can and are willing to do more than complain and hate can support those making a positive difference such as the agency that is mentioned in the want ad in this link: www.simplyhired.com/job/program-manager-social-worker-nonprofit-healthcare-job/south-jersey-behavioral-health-resources/xnlktalpev

Alfred Strauss Another example, perhaps particularly applicable to what one might encounter in some bars is: www.simplyhired.com/job/case-manager-cdac-behavioral-health-non-profit-job/south-jersey-behavioral-health-resources-inc/hpti6abnjn The point is, if you hate the problem that much, there are things that you can do besides criticizing others. Support your local positive solutions.

such a powerful moment - jimmy starting to cry and saying he's sorry for having to beg... and joe basically shaking him saying, 'what the hell do you have to be sorry about....' - that line always makes me tear up, no matter how much i see it... we've all went through moments like this, where we've been broke and or unable -- and feel totally worthless when we ask for help --- all we need is someone to say to us that line -- what the hell do you have to be sorry about..... this movie scene got me through many bad years..

I've lived in this state for almost 3 years. Years of looking for work applying for jobs only thing that saved me just enough to pay the power bill was that i have alot of experience in renovations and can pretty much build a house from the ground up. But by this point I was beaten down and depressed so much that literally making 2 dollars a day was a godsend. My Landlord of all people saved me waved my rent let me do maintenance in the building to make up the money owed to keep myself afloat. And what little money I could make went to food. I racked out almost 12 grand in dept to him during this time and was stressed about it every day. He said don't worry about it times will change. Sure enough they finally did. Rode that horrible wave out and and have a very good friend out of it. I have him almost fully paid back now and a chapter is behind me.
