I love that when Richard Crenna (The Colonel Trautman actor) was approached to be in this film he went to Sylvester Stallone to get his blessing, of which he fully received and was told to have fun with it. You have to love it when actors are not so full of themselves and the franchises they helped build and are like "Hell yes, spoof the movie and have a good time!"

I love that Richard Crenna was in this flick. He deadpanned so much of the humor that, for a while, I wondered if he actually had a sense of humor at all (I was twelve when I first saw this, so of course I'd think that). Turns out he's just that good of an actor. This movie is better because of Colonel Trautman.

Yeah. Stallone seems to have a fairly good sense of humor. After all, he gave us the Expendables movies, which are technically parodies of the action genrea, but also tend to work as actual action movies. Expendables 2 is probably the best of that franchise.

Martin and Charlie Sheen were both in the movie Wall Street. Directed by Oliver Stone who did Platoon and JFK. It’s a fantastic movie and Michael Douglas is phenomenal in it. Highly recommend for a reaction. It’s pretty much the grandfather to the Wolf of Wall Street. Hence their line “I loved you in Wall Street!” So funny!

The reality TV competition they were spoofing at the end was American Gladiators. It ran from 1989-1996 and briefly got revived for a couple of seasons in 2008 during the writer's strike. It was very popular, so much so that in 1992 the UK created its own Gladiators show and other countries followed. Each episode two men and two women compete in a series of games that changed week to week against eachother and/or the shows stable of Gladiators with names like Turbo or Laser or Blaze. The better your score, the bigger lead you get in the final obstacle course round.

@@vodengc520 That line seems stupid and out of nowhere. But it's actually based on the NBA's advertisements of themselves, at the time (the 90's). "The NBA! It's FANTASTIC!!!" was their whole pitch. They just changed out NBA with "war." It's still corny, but at least not as corny when you know the source material it's based on. You guys should do Top Secret! starring Val Kilmer. It’s my favorite spoof movie. It kind of pokes fun at a lot of things, but the main things seem to be Elvis Presley musicals and Cold War/WW2 era spy films. I just think it has the highest ratio jokes that land for these type of films and Kilmer knows just how much to lean into a joke in order to sell it. Plus, the supporting characters are just super funny with some of them drawing huge laughs.

"Wall Street" is a 1987 movie that had both father and son Martin and Charlie Sheen (although Michael Douglas' character is the standout). The family's real last name is Estevez, Sheen is a stage name Martin took to sound less ethnic to get acting work in the 70s, and Charlie took it as well. His brother Emilio stuck with Estevez. While Charlie became the highest paid actor on tv and went the way of cocaine, 3sums, and hiv, Emilio followed his father's catholic faith and started his own vineyard. They have their own father/son movie called The Way which is really touching.

The key to all the Zucker Bros/ Pat Proft/ Abrams spoofs is that they always asked their actors to play it straight regardless of the silliness of the situation. That’s why so many spoofs in the early 2000’s failed: because they were just parodying a scene from some other movie but winking at the audience the whole time, constantly looking at the audience and essentially saying “look how clever we are!”.

This is one of those movies that has 150% going all movie… and you don't even get all of the jokes and puns on a one go. Still missed one of my favorites, in the beginning when they are in the monk village when Topper says, "These men have taken a vow of celibacy, like their fathers and their fathers before them." Also, I love that both Charlie Sheen was doing his narration from "Platoon" (1986) and his father Martin Sheen doing his from "Apocalypse Now" (1979).

Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Nielsen are two great comedic actors by not being comedic actors. They leading men in their respective mediums (Bridges being in movies and Nielsen being in Television) but in their later career, they used their dramatic acting skills and played their roles "straight" (or as serious as possible) which made it even funnier.

Great reaction! This was a personal favorite back in the day but I didn't enjoy it very much this time around. But at least you two helped me remember what it was like. The movie spoofs many things but one of the least-talked-about films these days is a pretty good 1987 Kevin Costner thriller No Way Out that's the basis of one of the scenes here.

No Way Out is actually a really good suspense thriller, but these days people mostly remember it for that scene in the back of the limo, for obvious reasons.

If you haven't already watched it, as good as Rowan is as Mr. Bean, you should really try Black Adder, not only is Rowan awesome, but you'll also see the likes of Tony Robinson who is brilliant in the series. You also get, both Hugh Laurie, Dr House himself, as well as his long time friend and comedic partner, Stephen Fry!!! Only recommendation is to skip the first season, it's vastly different and hardly feels like the same series, this is the only show I recommend to skip a season, because it's that big of a night and day difference between season 1 and the rest of the series, besides if you are curious, you can always check it out after you've watched the rest.

@23:10 the reference being made here was a show called "American Gladiators" where competitors (typically very fit as I recall) had to run through a course of obstacles and muscled athletic defenders for time to win a prize. It is long gone.

The bit at 23:02 is from American Gladiators. It was a sort of gameshow competition where contestants would face several physically-demanding challenges opposed by the "gladiators" who were actors/athletes who opposed them. Think the show "Ninja Warrior" but with people throwing stuff at the competitors or trying to knock them off of platforms.

@CineBinge React George's question of "Is there a rule about mocking world leaders like this?", made me think of The Great Dictator, which you guys need to watch. It's the first "talkie" that Charlie Chaplin did. He not only starred in it, he wrote it, directed it, AND produced it, along with contributing to the music. It's well worth seeing. He made that movie, mocking Hitler, during WW2, which was a ballsy move.

One of my favorite Rowan Atkinson performances outside of Mr. Bean, is his performance in the movie Rat Race. It is an ensemble comedy with an absolutely huge cast featuring Seth Green, Whoopi Goldberg and, wait for it, John Cleese. As far as parody movies go, National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1 and Mafia!. The latter being made from the same team behind Airplane! and Hot Shots!.

The speed text at the start can be explained by submarines using Very Low Frequency comms, a rate of 50 baud - 5 bytes a second. If they're using standard ASCII of 8 bits per letter, thats 5 letters per second, so it would be slow to appear on the screen 🧐

12:15 It's a callback to the first Hot Shots where everyone seem to know each other then they all seem to have "Eagle river" in common. Also the deadpan "I'll set my charges and blow it all up" is perfect. 23:17 it's "American gladiator" (Just "gladiator" in most other countries) think "Ninja Warrior" but with bodybuilder opponents along the way, the whole show was basically two contestants who faced off against the recurring gladiators and (their opponent) in events, winning events gave them a head start on the final challenge which was an obstacle course the competitors raced each other on.

The vomiting scene is a spoof of... a real thing. Back in 1992 then president George Bush Sr. was on an diplomatic trip throughout Asia and the last stop was Japan where they had a banquet. The official statement is that Bush got some type of influenza, fainted during the dinner, immediately came back to senses and vomited over the lap of Japan's Prime minister. To this day that episode is referenced in Japan as 'Bushing It' although nowadays is definitely a very old reference. The amazing thing is that the movie goes to the length of creating a very similar setting of the real thing, you can see videos in KZfaq and compare. Lloyd Bridges character was a dig on Bush, more than a few line of dialogue are shots to stuff he said or did (and of course the whole Iraq invasion if it wasn't obvious).

14:12 ONE OF MY FAVORITE META REFERENCES - Both Charlie Sheen and his father Martin Sheen starred in the movie WALL STREET directed by Oliver Stone. Also a good movie. I did love how they worked off well with each other whenever they share a movie together, the fact that they both reference two separate Vietnam War based Movies that they were in was amazing. The Wall Street reference was a great bonus.
