I worked at the beer store in Toronto in the 80's ... had a friend who worked there for years, was working his way into the union. His cousin talked him into going to work for him at the stock exchange... he was sick of loading beer in the warehouses, etc and quit to go into stocks. On Friday, October 16th, 1987 we bought him a cake and had a party after his last shift at the beer store. His first day was on Black Monday. Needless to say he showed back up on Tuesday and asked for his job back.

Responding to your question about parents kidnapping thier own kids. In the US, if there has not been a custody decision in court, either parent can take the child. I was in law enforcement for 12 years. Several times I had to explain this to the other parent. Often one parent will have had the child living with them for several years when the other parent shows up and takes the child. The first parent calls the cops. I explain to them that if a court has not ruled on it, then either parent can take the child with no repercussions.

When you were talking about how things don't change, it reminded me of something I read back when I was starting to invest (the books weren't the "get rich quick" types, but the ones that give sensible investing advice, like buy and hold, diversify, etc.). Each of the books mentioned that every 30 years or so people go nuts and ignore the general investing rules and stocks go into a bubble (like the Dot Com bubble, for example). One of the books had a comment on this, saying that when people start ignoring the fundamentals of the companies that the stocks represent, to remember that the four most expensive words in the English language is "This time it's different." If you don't realize that the general rules still do apply, you'll lose big when the bubble bursts and everything comes crashing down.

I implore you guys to react to The Big Short. Not comedy based like this, more documentary-ish than anything, but it is mind-blowing seeing how messed up those "middle men" are and how much of an impact they have on the economy.

This is legit one of the funniest movies ever made. It's like a frat movie translated into reality.

I watched this film on LOADS of strong painkillers because I had this really bad tooth. I had no clue what the movie was about going in... and it ended up being the best film experience I ever had. I was totally alone and it felt like I was there. I was just exhilarated and euphoric the entire time. I don't even know how to fully explain the experience. It was easily the most enjoyable film experience I've ever had. Nothing comes close except maybe this bar-theatre in PA where I saw *Hateful 8* with my childhood best friend. But that pales in comparison to this experience. If I could live my life on repeat, the moment I saw this film alone in my room with that bad-tooth would be something I'd play on a loop.

Jodarn Belfort is still alive and doing public speaking events. He was available to Leo and Scorcese during the shoot for the sake of accuracy. He is really charismatic. Leo did a great job of playing him.

The setting for this movie was 1987. Telemarketing was brand new. Before that was ordering from a paper catalog. There would be no “trust issues” because there was no mistrust of telemarketing- it was cutting edge technology. They built credibility with words and his script was probably the first invention.

A totally different type of movie, but I really hope you'll watch the Big Short, it's about the housing market crash, it's a fantastic movie. One of my favourites.

The second floor was all business... Then you go down to the first floor, stocked with drugs and hookers all day, get your "fix", then go back to work upstairs. The office I work in doesn't have that...

I'm glad George, like myself, didn't see Niomi as a victim. She knew everything and only left him after he was indited. I think the only truly innocent people were the cops just doing their jobs. Even Jordan's first wife knew he was ripping people off people and was the one that told him to steal from the rich. It won the oscars for best picture and best actor (for Jean Dujardin) in 2012. If you want to see a french movie of his, I highy recommend any movie from the OSS 117 franchise (It's a James Bond parody).

As George asked, it is possible to have a parent be arrested for kidnapping their own kid. The problem is that a lot of times in the US police don't care enough and will give the parent the benefit of the doubt, even when the parent isn't good for the kid. Especially if the parent is the father and the mother makes the call. Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales is a landmark supreme court case that is based on police not searching for a father who kidnapped two of his kids from their mother, who had a restraining order on him. The police did nothing.

Where did a read a description of Jonah's character in this movie - or maybe Jonah himself - as a "perpetually lit match?" Martin Scorsese is definitely in my top directors ever. If I had to pick my top favorite movies, there is always at least 2 or 3 Martin Scorsese movies at the top of the list. My personal favorites are "Goodfellas", The Departed", "Taxi Driver" "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "Casino" and "Raging Bull" as an honorable mention.

A small correction George, Leo is not a method actor, although he does get close to it. Method actors tend to stay in character during filming and at times outside of it while filming a movie. Leo doesn't do this, on the other hand he takes weeks or even months of research and preparation for a role and gets professionals (who sometimes accompany him throughout the filming) and is super professional in always getting into the character's mind, which which doesn't make him as disruptive as method actors who can be incredibly over the top in their dedication to not getting out of character

Read "The Lords of Creation" by Frederick Lewis Allen and you will see they have been doing this before 1900. It's exactly this type of behavior that led to the many crashes in Wall Street along the way to the crash and depression in 1929.
