As a German myself, I like the profanity that is expressed here. My grand uncle volonteered for U-Boot, because it was his changse to escape his boring, little town life. Many germans were just seeing a personal career change, like Werner von Braun. The evil does not require a lot of evel people. you just have to create a system, where everybody is motivated to do evel things.

@@dffndjdjd Yes. You are right about von Brauns Bio. He knew about the KZ-slave labour. But many other German companys did use labour as well. E.g. BMW requested extra KZ, just for exploiting workers in there factury. So this leeds me to the conclusion, that it is not about the individual company boss beeing extraodenaraly cold harded, but about a system of just don't caring about slave labour and only seeing personal profit.

@@dffndjdjd I don't defend von Braun. He war a cold, egocentric scientist. But i think in every coutry the distribution of those cold people is more or less the same. So you have to have a system that prevents those people from exploiting others. I think this systematic problem is displaid well in the Film. The protagonist only learns empathy with jews throu a personal relationship and his rebel parents. But if not, he also could have ended as a german KZ guard.

Yeah, and it's good that the movie portrays them as people. Because it is people that do evil things, and anyone has that capacity. If you purely demonize them you won't recognize evil when it comes to your doorsteps, and you may even lead some people to feel betrayed when they realized they've been lied to, Nazis weren't entirely evil demons, the average guy had feelings, loved ones, dreams, were passionate, and that miss-characterization attracts some people to think they've been lied too about the Nazi ideology, which is obviously a bad thing. It's regular people that do evil things, realize that, and don't be them.

This movie has been a different movie every time Iʻve watched it. The first time I watched it, I cried until it took me someplace beyond tears, then laughed for almost the entire length of the second viewing. Different sets of themes have stood out each time through, since. Itʻs typical for me to watch a movie I love more than once, and a big part of what I like about movies is being able to get more out of them each time. But this is different, in a way Iʻd never seen before, from any other director, writer, or actor. Much less one person being all three at once.

I saw the film for the first time a few days ago. When the scene came up where the mother is standing on the wall and her shoes are on Jojos's eye level, I immediately knew it had to be some kind of exposure. Shots like that always fulfill a purpose. And it was absolutely perfect when the moment happened, because it did exactly what it was made for: The scene where the mum stands on the wall is one of the, if not THE happiest scene in the film. It shows mother and son goofing around, having fun, loving each other. The vivid picture of her shoes (and the fact that tying each others shoes stands for affection in this movie) made the scene were her shoes are yet again on his eye level even worse, because you're immediately reminded of the exposure scene. Them having fun, being carefree and goofing around. Really making us aware of what Jojo just lost. Taika is a genius.

Ugh, this movie is ingeniously beAutiful. I agree with Roman , there’s no genre for this. It’s created another genre. I love what Taika did with Elsa, that he didn’t make her a cliched ‘pitiable’ character. Hitler and the Nazis were simply genius, and the use of Rebel Wilson, Who is usually used as a tropey cast away character, really turned it around with her, such a refreshing view of her style of comedy! Also... didn’t think I would say this but Sam Rockwell is my favourite Nazi lol.

Also, with the ‘relatability acting’. Works so well! And it’s so hard to get. Greta Gerwig tried it with Little Women and it felt so out of place

@@AishInTheHouse No single genre, maybe, but (I've posted this comment elsewhere) I see it as a hybrid of whatever Billy Elliot was (2000 film version) and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. It had all the Nazi horror and the surrealistic dark comedy, plus a number of plot commonalities with both.

I don’t get how people found this movie offensive. Most of what I read was about how Hitler was portrayed. I’m losing my mind thing that it’s not Hitler, it’s what a kid imagine what Hitler would be like. He’s an imaginary friend, I’m losing my mind on how people are dead set on being upset at everything.

Prior to WW2, Germany was leading in (industrial) design and architecture (Bauhaus). Up till about 1910, Jugendstil was dominant (German reinterpretation of the French Art Deco). So of course there were still many Jugendstil buildings around, before most were unfortunately destroyed during the Allied bombing campaign on Germany's cities and industry.
