You guys are a credit to your generation. You are so open-minded and receptive. The films of that period, which includes Italian neo-realism and French New Wave, were not afraid to tackle big issues, and to see you discussing the issues raised by them has been a real joy. From about that same period, there's an Indian film, by another master, Satyajit Ray, called "The World of Apu" (from The Apu Trilogy) that gets me every time. The final scene is one of the most moving in cinema.

Your foreign films playlist so far has been amazing! The fact that you guys choose such classic films from global cinema and are open to critiquing and discussing them is what makes me truly love and respect this channel so much!!! Also, Tom needs to clean his room. It seems like it gets messier with every new video. 😂😂

This is a great film! I highly recommend "Hour of the Wolf" as a Bergman followup. It's, yes, another horror film, but it's not particularly terrifying, just psychologically disturbing and mysterious.

I love Bergman's films; i wrote my final paper for my film studies class back in the '80s on him. The "Fanny och Alexander" 4 part series is often part of my winter holiday movie viewing (at least the first part).

Bergman made a lot of great films. And he often used the same cast. Max Von Sydow and Gunnar Björnstrand were his two main actors, while the blonde actress who played Mia (Bibi Anderson), and Liv Ullman, Harriet Anderson, Gunnil Lindblom and Ingrid Thulin. All great actors. Check out The Magician, Fanny and Alexander, The Silence, Through A Glass Darkly, Sawdust and Tinsel and so many more. Fanny and Alexander has a great twist at the end.

Keep it up with the film classics, lads! They're worth it and it makes the channel unique. And now you can also enjoy watching Death play Bill and Ted for their lives with games of Twister, battleship and clue😛

If you take a film class in college /university you will usually end up watching and analyzing this film next to Citizen Cane to get some great insight into storytelling and using the tools of film to tell multi-layered stories with one good superficial story, a deeper philosophical tale and an openly interpretive story that can be considered indefinitely by not giving you answers but posing thoughtful questions.

Really good, thoughtful discussion. I'm glad you did a Bergman. You capture very well the existential side of Bergman: death is a fact, the devil and God are ideas. And human suffering is also a fact. You also spot the wonderful humor in Bergman. The humor is *dramatic* because it's always part of a contrast: some humans view things this way, some that, and that generates contrast from drama (differing points of view). Bergman worked in theater his whole life! She he staged many great plays (and some operas). He sometimes uses theater as a metaphor--as he does in THE SEVENTH SEAL with the traveling players. If you want to see something interesting, master of low-budget filmmaking Roger Corman filmed THE MASQUE OF RED DEATH in England in Eastmancolor. And it's really his colorful take on THE SEVENTH SEAL. With Vincent Price and loosely based on Poe. Not the kind of horror you've been watching, but very rich. And Corman's low-budget films like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and A BUCKET OF BLOOD are amazing horror-comedies. Each was made in a FEW DAYS! You may have seen some of the musical remake of LITTLE SHOP....It started in black-and-white: with a cameo by Jack Nicholson as a masochist.

I would suggest watching Persona, Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander. I feel those are Bergman’s few best movies. This is an interesting introduction into his catalog.

Great to see some subtitled movies on a reaction channel, it's fairly rare; good reactions and discussion. Some favourite subtitled movies I would also recommend are: Cinema Paradiso, The 400 Blows, Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources, Tampopo, Force Majeure, Incendies, Untouchable, Amelie, and Delicacy; plus, 71 into the Fire, and City of Life and Death, if you happen to be in the mood for a war film. Just some possibles to check out.

I haven't seen this film, but the second half reminds me of _The Masque of the Red Death,_ the Roger Corman film based on the Edgar Allan Poe story.

Btw, if you're into great, great great old black and white movies, that still hold up today storywise, i'd suggest a few. Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa from 1954. The OG of action movies assembling a gang to do a job. It's 3 and a half hours but you really don't see the time pass because it is so entertaining and the action scenes still hold up today. 12 Angry men. A 1957 courtroom drama (well actually a jury deliberation drama). Even though 90% of the movie is in one single room, clever use of camera and compelling characters keep this movie riveting from start to finish. The 1957 Kubrick film (and my favorite of his), Paths of Glory with Kirk Douglas. A film loosely based on a real ww1 story, the action and ensuing court drama is mesmerizing. Fantastic, fantastic movie.

You NEEEEED to watch The Passion of Joan of Arc....incredible film. I’d recommend Throne of a blood as well, it’s Macbeth told as a samurai tale...amazing visuals and acting!

I'd like to recommend Excalibur (1981). It's also full of heavy themes. A beautifully filmed and highly entertaining film as well.

Bergman - in my humble opinion - was the best filmmaker. Period. May I recommend: Cries & Whispers, Autumn Sonata, Persona.

Whenever I've mentioned this film to friend's I've mentioned it's quite funny and they've always thought I was making a shit joke 🤣 9.9 for me. I'm glad you liked The Seventh Seal because I feel like it opens the door to his other masterpieces nicely. His films go beyond the traditional mechanics of film making effortlessly, always playing with the human condition seamlessly. I've always thought of Ingmar Bergmann as a much more dialed in less wish-washy Jean Luc Goddard. Ingmar Bergmann's film's finally getting seen though I love it!

It's always so fun to watch you guys at the beginning when you don't know what kind of treat you have in store. Based on how much you've loved Come And See and The Seventh Seal, I think you'd both enjoy Stalker by Tarkovsky.

I was nine in 57 when it first came out. I did not see it. Only in my college years in the in the late sixties, did I take a "History of Film" Class. We screened this film, Then moved on to another Bergman gem.. "Wild Strawberries"

So fun fact, the last shot with Death leading the others over the hill was not planned. After they finished filming, the director saw a good shot and told people to put on robes and go over the hill. Totally impromptu and without the actors.

While I don't feel all of his movies are equally good, there many great Bergman films in addition to The Seventh Seal (which is wonderful), from a comedy like Smiles of a Summer's Night (prize winner at Cannes; remade by Woody Allen and by Stephen Sondheim) to dramas like Wild Strawberries, Persona, Cries and Whispers (and many more fine ones: The Virgin Spring, The Magician, Through a Glass Darkly, etc), to a brilliant early 1980s TV mini-series, Fanny and Alexander (the chopped down movie version won 4 Oscars). And there is a beautifully filmed Swedish-language production of Mozart's The Magic Flute that was directed by Bergman, too. And yes, plenty of parodies have been made of The Seventh Seal, one with Death challenged to a game of badminton..! If you are wanting to explore great older movies, there are plenty from Hollywood, and if you want to see some English ones, what about an Ealing comedy or two, starting possibly with Kind Hearts and Coronets? And while you may be nervous about some European cinema after a negative experience, what about gambling on a long classic like Les Enfants du Paradis, or instead a Jacques Tati comedy, or maybe a good Fellini movie, or something from the French New Wave (my favourite director of that group is still Truffaut). Or maybe a movie by Akira Kurosawa, whether Rashomon, or Seven Samurai, or Ikiru, or even Ran (his version of King Lear). Plenty of good more recent movies, too (including Wes Anderson's films), but since you enjoyed an older Bergman classic these are some suggestions that you may enjoy.

If y’all want keep on with the foreign films, I’d like to recommend Das Boot (1981). It follows a German U-Boat and its crew during the waining days of the Battle of the Atlantic. One of the very few films where you root for the “bad” guys.

I avoided this account after/during The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, then looking through KZfaq as usual saw the title, so decided to watch. I requested it 4-5 times, so it was good to see. Ingmar Bergman directed and wrote it. The same year 1957, he released another surreal before special F/X were very good. "Wild Strawberries" and The Seventh Seal have the same rating on IMDB. I've owned both of them for about 20 years. Ingrid Bergman, his cousin, started decades before he did, and she got big in 1942 with Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca". Both Bergman's have a lot of great movies in their resumes... ---Good to see your rating, Bergman is in the top 5, maybe top 3 of my directors. Only one is still alive. David Lynch...

Suspiria is not a bad film, very far from it, you just didn't like it, a very different thing.

Another fun "death" movie is "Meet Joe Black". Though at its core its a really messed up romance movie, it has some fun conversations with death and who/what death really is. Plus we see Brad Pitt get creamed by a car.
