It's goddamn maddening that people don't understand that *observational humor* has NO legs to stand on when the "joke" teller gets the *observation* completely wrong
@justinz9225
@justinz9225 5 жыл бұрын
This is a great point. When people point out it's just humor, they don't realize that for humor to be successful, it has to have some foundational premise that the audience agrees upon. This is why comedians who do observational humor tend to pick broad subjects that most viewers have some experience in, like "going to the DMV" or "eating donuts". Because the premise is easy for everyone to identify with automatically.

@@billyfox6368 i think the point is that it DOES hurt people, it hurts the people who make these films and it hurts the people who watch these videos' opinion of the flilm. Granted not a huge percentage of people take the videos as real criticism but if any of your fanbase do then its your duty not to supply mis informaton about the films whether its "satire" or not. Or atleast put a big bold disclaimer at the start stating that its not 100 percent accurate.

@@jacobely6826 Although I understand that it does do that to an extent, it barely has an effect. If a few people don't watch the movie consequently, is it really worth wholly boycotting an entire channel despite its actually being funny? The effect of CinemaSins on the industry is so minimal that it's really not worth worrying about it and furthermore, the 'misinformation' to which you referred probably isn't the bit with which people had a problem. Honestly, I'm not sure that anyone really thought, "Do you know what? Because this movie put those cars' speeds as different despite their movement appearing similar, I'm not going to watch this movie." The bits which make people avoid it are the proper criticisms or the clips of the movie and their own opinion of it, not the minor details which CinemaSins gets wrong.

Inside Out shows that there’s no such thing as purely positive and negative emotions. Joy even explains in the beginning what every emotion helps with: Fear keeps Riley out of danger, Disgust keeps her from getting poisoned in many senses, and Anger makes sure that there is justice and fairness. The whole movie is about Joy learning to grasp that Sadness has a place, and that is when you need to let people know that things are not okay and you need help. And that’s honestly pretty nuanced for a kid’s movie. Shame Cinema Sins didn’t get it though, they were probably drooling over Spring Breakers.

Yet the cliche joke isn't overused anymore, meaning it can be funny again. But CS thinks tropes and cliches are bad, but in reality it depends on the execution to find out if it is bad or good. Also it is an important plot and character development setup, Nick was wasting Judy's time as revenge. The scene also makes his character development to support her and become an police officer more flawless, as we saw him go from not caring to actually caring in a very smooth way. And it's a good executed comedy scene on top of it, there is nothing wrong with it.

So, ahem, the definition of Satire: "the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues." So, pointing out non-existent flaws in a movie, isn't really pointing out ridiculing or criticizing people stupidity or vices. A lot of Cinemasins' defenders are saying that you shouldn't worry about them making blatant errors all the time, because it's all for the sake of comedy. But I think why that stance bothers people is because comedy, especially "satirical" or "critical" comedy, is expected to have some element of truth in it. It makes the point more effective. Instead, all we have are a bunch of badly edited montages of non sequiturs, misinterpretations, and outright lies. There is nothing cutting or trenchant about their humor. It is cheap, lazy, and inane.

@CleaveTheDragon 8 жыл бұрын
The problem there is that the misconception aspect of comedy is something that the audience is in on or aware of, which isn't the case with CinemaSins wherein you need to have watched the film yourself to notice. Instead the nature of the video series comes off as errors/lies on behalf of the movie, rather than the editor. Nothing about his persona gives the impression that he is actively missing on errors or correcting himself, and is quite literally just him editing the parts of scene to make it seem bad so I can make fun of it. Which is along the same level of humor as saying "FaffyWaffel told me he smells farts. What a fart sniffer." Well not really because that's ridiculous/infantile and only the most naive would take it as face value. But editing a movie to say, remove a line explaining what a character is doing, and then omitting that line so you can claim "the movie never explains what the character is doing" is not straightforward and does simply come off as malicious misdirection. Literally the joke is saying that the movie is bad for a very plausible/believable reason that is totally fabricated. The reason this is a problem is because not only is it contriving jokes, it's doing it AT THE EXPENSE OF THE MOVIE, giving people erroneous views of the movie and it's quality. It is ultimately, kind of disrespectful, though how bad that is depends on how much you give a shit about movies vs passing time watching youtube clickbait garbage (ie cinemaSins)

To borrow a joke from a Potholer54 video: when a comedian makes a joke about skydivers wearing helmets - "what is the deal with the helmet? Can you _kinda_ make it?" - it's because the skydiver does wear a helmet. That's the contradiction/misinterpretation. The comedian doesn't say "why do skydivers wear ballet shoes? Are they hoping to do a pirouette on landing?" because skydivers don't wear ballet shoes. That's the equivalent of taking a film scene so unfathomably out of context to give a "cinema sin" for it. Especially since they claim to be "cinema sins" and give "cinema sins" to videos. This would imply this is something that _makes the movie bad for including_ - like failures in continuity, ie a character changing clothes between cut shots in the same scene. Their premise is bullshit. This would be easily forgiven by changing "sins" to "gaffes", because then the comedy banner is being raised higher than the claimed criticism banner.

When they get something blatantly wrong and then criticize the movie for it, what is the joke there? Is the joke on them? Is the comedy of Cinema Sins laughing at them for being incompetent? Like when Jeremy admits he doesn't get how taxonomy's nested hierarchy works and think's gorillas and apes are different things, or when they claim the carefully researched ant facts that went into Ant-Man are called bullshit because Jeremy doesn't know shit about anything, am I supposed to laugh at him?

The first video I saw of "Cinema Sins" was The Matrix, and the first sin was when the words "Wake up Neo..." appeared on Neo's computer, and he woke up. Cinema sins said "Being woken up by text on a screen" and counted it as a sin, which made me wonder if they even watched the next ten seconds of the film (or even understood... *any* of it's mechanics) where the text "knock knock, Neo..." appears on his screen, *before* someone knocks on his door, showing that the people outside the Matrix can see what will happen inside the Matrix before it happens, as is further hammered home by them guiding him out of his office avoiding the police by telephone. I never watched another Cinema Sins.

My personal most hated cinema sins video is the Who Framed Rodger Rabbit one, where they continuously give sins for cartoons having cartoon logic based physics and such. Like according to them, just because the cartoons are blended with the real world, they shouldn't be able to do the things cartoons do. So that whole episode is just them adding sins every time a cartoon character does something completely expected of a cartoon character. There was a ton of other stupid sins too but I watched it so long ago I can't remember them all, but what I do remember is coming out of it thinking not a single sin was actually justified.

Unless people find getting it wrong funny. And the way you find humor from their ignorance is far funnier than any shitty joke they make up after editing a movie to hell so it isnt absolutely obviously wrong. To be honest, the concept of critiquing movies in their style could be funny, but their complete lack of care for stylistic choices and symbolism in favor of making unfunny jokes about the literal reality of the movie that isnt supposed to be inerpreted that way, and the constant misogyny... no thanks.

Cinemasins reminds me so much of the smug superior attitude some guys have about various forms of media while they seem unable or unwilling to interact with the art as anything other than a 'story for entertainment and nothing else.' Guys like that dont even seem to concieve of the idea that a story would have deeper meaning beyond the narrative presented. There's just this attitude almost like they see it as 'cool stuff happens then its the end'. The idea of metaphor or alagory doesnt even enter into the equation. Films to people who act like that are just a couple hours of exciting images with no sort of take-away meaning or messege or idea behind it. Its just so silly that nerds like that see themselves as intellectually superior movie critis. Meanwhile a good portion of their nitpicking is actually uninformed and wrong (as you point out). And they dont seem capable of having an actually thought or opinion of a work beyond if it was cool/exciting.

You know what CinemaSins reminds me of? Doug Walker, aka the Nostalgia Critic. Like CinemaSins, Doug doesn't really do research when it comes to his reviews, which I guess is understandable, he does one review a week, and there are more aspects that go into a review compared to a CinemaSins video (which I'll get back to), but he's also uninquisitive and incurious, and very much like CinemaSins, he's completely unable to see past movies on a literal level. Adding to this is his increased use of clipless reviews, i.e. reviews that don't use clips from the movies but instead use reenactments of the movies using himself and his crew, which is bad because it means he has complete control over what he criticizes, so he can literally make up or leave out stuff far more easily than CinemaSins. This, coupled with just how many facts he gets wrong about various things (including animals, again like CinemaSins), really makes me feel like the two are a match mad in H̶e̶a̶v̶e̶n̶ Hell. The only thing I'll give Doug credit for is that he actually appears on screen, and often has his crew acting... well, "acting" alongside him. The quality of these onscreen bits isn't good, but at least they're somewhat more justified in not getting everything right compared to CinemaSins, who not only are inconsistent with their own sins, but have frequent technical flaws within their on videos, meaning the bar was lower for them and they still can't be bothered to clear it. It really is rather infuriating, especially when you consider how popular CinemaSins is... which is why I try not to think about them that much.

One of my favorite CinemaSins moments is in the review of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. At the start of the film, when the film reveals that the cartoon with Roger and the baby is actually being filmed on a live action set with Roger and the baby as cartoon actors, they ask how the real world objects could demonstrate cartoon physics. And yet a scene later on where Roger jumps through a window and makes a hole the shape of his silhouette still gets marked as a sin even though happening on both occasions (And others, like how the hole-in-the-wall stickers work on none toon walls) should qualify it as this film universe's internal logic that's not specified by the dialogue.

Many a time I've watched Cinesins, enjoyed them and laughed. Many other times i watched and grew angry @ sins they gave that didn't make sense or were blatantly wrong. My husband has found me yelling @ the screen. I thought I was alone. I'm glad I'm not - and I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Please do more. This is satisfying.

You yell at your computer screen?

Oh, you are just too clever for me. But to answer your question, no. In this comment I was specifically referring to yelling at my television, as I find it to be superior format for KZfaq viewing. Be well.

Devon Van Horn if you watched CinemaSins then you should know not to take them seriously and just enjoy the videos, you can get angry at some, I point out their errors sometimes but I still enjoy it nonetheless because I know its not to be taken seriously and only good for a laugh

The one that really got under my skin was when they gave "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" a sin for using the "Next Generation" theme. TMP predates TNG by eight years.

The sins being out of order in Hateful Eight is a reference to Tarantino’s habit of telling stories out of chronological order, i think.

but they do it in other videos that have nothing to do with that. I think you're giving them way more credit then they deserve.

I can only see such a claim as a defence against people pointing out how _shoddy_ their work is. Their supposedly legitimate reviews that they post after watching films contain the exact same claims that end up as sins. So such excuses fall rather flat. Their work isn't funny. All the """jokes""" they make are based on deliberately misinterpreting the scene and in many instances actively _editing out_ explanations.

JammyD2579 You can claim it isn't funny all you like but the views disagree. As far as content creation goes the views are all that matters. So go ahead and be self righteous and cinema sins will laugh at you right to the bank.

If it was just "unfunny" and "bad humour" then meh. That's subjective person to person and as you say, the views show that someone enjoys it who clearly isn't me, Shaun or Jen. I believe quite deeply in content creators on KZfaq being able to create content, content people just weren't able to make before, and it's the reason I put up with KZfaq Red. But CinemaSins isn't just bad. It's horseshit, and wrong. It actually makes me question how much I believe in that idea of content creation. If Sins didn't have ad revenue and couldn't just churn out their shite, and had to please an actual paying audience through Patreon (something I believe in a lot more than KZfaq ads as a way of supporting content), I think they'd be hurting. Which kind of makes me like Patreon more.

After watching some cinemasins videos and getting genuinly angry, I figured that I couldn't be the only one not fooled by the utter stupidity of their videos. This brought me to you. Keep doing what you do, brother, united we stand (against cinemasins). You tell em like it is

And that is the kind of ignorant thought that makes you a complete discredit to the human race. When people are right, they are right. When they are wrong, they are wrong. Plain and simple. He even says when CS actually brings up a good point but that does not overlook the fact that in the whole scheme of things CS is just plain WRONG about nearly EVERYTHING. Think before you speak and maybe others will actually start to take you seriously. Until then? Grow up and stop trying to act like a five year old who thinks they sound intelligent just because they flipped through a dictionary once YEARS ago. -_-
