@zacg_4 жыл бұрын
I'm going to do something that is a waste of time and attempt to address the strongest version of Molyneux's argument. Let's assume that what he is saying is that the point is to show a woman being stronger than men as a symbolic way to empower and excite feminists that just want to see that illustrated on screen. I think that meta-narrative discussion is reasonable and that some feminists did get excited merely by seeing the training sequences on the island. So let's give him way more credit than he deserves and assume that is what he meant. First of all, that's a really dumb thing to be upset about. Second, that means he just doesn't understand superhero stories. We always see superheroes do what normal people can't in a way that gives us hope and catharsis. Giving a character super powers isn't an excuse to let them get away with things that aren't realistic. It's the actual medium. You don't watch Thor and think "it's totally a cop out to let Thor beat an entire army with a hammer" because we have to accept that as part of the internal universe of the story. Some film critics don't like superhero films in general because their powers become sort of a deus ex machina way to fix the problem. But that only happens if the story itself is poorly constructed. Wonder Woman beating up groups of men with weapons may provide some feminist catharsis but it provides no more catharsis than any other superhero fight scene. We can all tell what's really going on. He just doesn't like the idea of a girl getting to be included in the superhero world as being on the same level as the male superheroes. Singling Wonder Woman out for the the types of criticism he makes here demonstrates a pretty obvious intent.

He hears that trope and then twists himself into knots to make it actually anti-men
@digaddog60992 жыл бұрын
That's actually a major part of the worldview? Take super mario bros. Mario is willing to go through a perilous journey just in order to save one woman. The fact that we put so many women but very few men in this position is because the authors know for a fact that we'll care more about the womans life than the man's. If a story gets more developed, such as by the time Luigi's mansion came out, the male character might have "earned the right" to be cared about enough to save. You can still argue that this is still sexist against women, but that's not mutually exclusive to the trope being sexist against men. And you can still argue against the validity of this, but I expect you to understand something before you try to debunk it. If you want to learn more, you could read the myth of male power, which argues more in depth about the extent of this gender role and why it matters. Tl;dr: the fact that a women's life is seen as the stake is direct proof that we care about women's lives, even from a sexist perspective. The fact that men die to get there shows mens lives as means to an end, intentionally or not.
@digaddog60992 жыл бұрын
@@laurafrakinroslin the problem with that logic is the assumption that it can't be both anti-man and anti-women Edit: when I typed anti-man my phone auto corrected it to anti-human, but when I typed anti-women it actually autocompleted. So that's kind of weird.
@jewels34002 жыл бұрын
@@digaddog6099 That's certainly an interpretation. And as we know all interpretations are valid. Now that that is covered let me share my point of view. This trope has a vast amount of differences that it can present of course. But I'm going to talk about generalizations, or what is considered most common. Okay, in this trope it is usually a female appearing person that acts as a prize, or the "stakes" you mentioned. This person has to be saved, by a usually male appearing character. And what I often see is that this person beings saved is powerless. She is weak, frail, naive, and so very scared. This is not her choice to be in this situation, and she most often times has very little agency. Now why do you think this character is usually played by a female character? I certainly don't understand why. Women can be very strong and have their own agency. But in these types of stories, they are forced into corners by their creator. Now with this, "men are disposable and not as important," thing. I personally don't see this at all. In these types of stories the male protagonist does it because they WANT TO. They often have a choice between what is considered good and bad. They are not forced into corners. And if they are, the writer comes up with, "they are strong and powerful and break free from this peril!" Sort of thing. If my friend really wanted to go fight a dragon I would warn them, but I would not stop them. And that is because I care about their agency. And absolutely not because I think they are "more disposable." What you are talking about is a very small sub-category of stories where the protagonist does not have a choice. And you aren't considering that in these stores woman are frequently seen as weak, eye candy, that can't choose for themselves. And the men CAN choose for themselves, and are always strong and heroic. There are of course exceptions that you can mention, like Eragon (the book). Men are not more expendable because they can choose for themselves. And in fact, men are usually chosen for this specific protagonist role because the entire world saw men as more capable. And men are typically more comfortable writing men. Now you may say, "well woman wrote to!" Not really. They weren't really allowed to. You know this, I shouldn't have to write a history lesson in order for you to know that (but I will if you prompt me). So that's where I come from. You should read a feminist book on the subject next to balance out your pallet. Not trying to tell you your interpretation is wrong, in fact I may agree with you in some very specific instances. It's just multiple POVs are better then one.

Even in that film, he had a woman who fought alongside him and was respected. And that is just one example. Many 80s action films featured heroines. So why are many acting as if this is new?

@@cadethumann8605 You tell me... I've been wondering about this for a long time. Nobody complained about Xena either.
@cadethumann86054 жыл бұрын
@@Zeverinsen On the opposite end, one thing I have been hearing is that "masculine" action heroes would not be accepted in today's movies. Like, I have been seeing aome comments under videos about the classic predator film where they say that manly men such as the characters in said film would not be accepted in today's media. When I mentioned some films that I find to be masculine such as MCU heroes like cap, I was told that they are not manly. I am confused. Why wouldn't the predator characters be accepted today? I don't see any misogynistic traits (the closest they get is making sex jokes (which people still do today and is normal for military to joke in tense situations) and being aggressive towards the one woman (who was aligned with the enemy guerillas. Once they realize that the titular creature is after them, they work together with her to take down the bigger threat)). And why aren't any mcu heroes considered masculine? Cap is a positive depiction of the American man (brave, kind, humble, smart, willing to stand against tyranny and unlawful acts, willing to go against the government to do what he thinks is right, fights through incredible odds no matter how hopeless the situation is, etc.). Iron man uses his intellect to invent technology to fight against enemies and is a very charming man. Just what gives?
@cadethumann86054 жыл бұрын
@Glenna Smith While I won't debate about whether or not mcu heroes are marty stus (even though they all suffer character flaws that bring conflicts (even positive traits can cause conflicts)), my point is that I still see many action heroes who possess traditional masculine traits such as bravery, strength, leadership, and other things. Films aside, I still see western products that feature "manly" protagonists. One of many people's favs is Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2, who has a rugged exterior and is an outlaw (even has a deep voice) but can be charming and is certainly brave for his gang. Even when dying, if you play honorably, he does whatever he can to help others with his remaining time. My point is that I don't understand this whole "masculinity is dying" when art still showcases manly men. About Xena, yes, I know she is a woman. But I am talking about character traits and qquestioning why certain traits are associated with certain genders rather than simply human traits in general. My apologies if my comment is worded weirdly.
@cadethumann86054 жыл бұрын
@Glenna Smith I do agree that many heroes are written boring and that it would be better if more heroes would have limitations or flaws (physical or mental) that test their characters more fiercely. That said, I still see modern works that depict struggling heroes (be it film, tv, anime, games, literature, etc.).

Of course Wonder Woman's Amazons are a bit different from the Ancient Greek's version, but the concept is still the same: A group of entirely women who are obsessed with war, terrifyingly good in combat, and daughters of a god (Ares the god of war in ancient greek mythology). I feel like it's kind of telling that a bunch of the things about the movie Stefan takes issue and seems to think are additions by modern writers have actually been part of Wonder Woman's mythos since she debuted in 1942. Her origin story of being a god-empowered super being from an island paradise populated entirely by warrior women (Which was originally outright named "Paradise Island" in the early comics) has been there from the beginning. I point this out because the audience Molyneaux is playing towards tends to get very upset if an adaptation makes changes to the source material and will often use this argument of canon purity as a defense against perceived, "politically correct" changes to the original material. But that apparently goes out the window when he's getting mad about Wonder Woman and the movie is a sinister SJW, feminist plot because it doesn't make changes to her established origin story? My point is Stefan Molyneaux doesn't know a goddamned thing about the character or movie he's talking about and is just using it as a smokescreen to give himself a platform to push his particular brand of reactionary politics. I mean, I realize that's obvious to everyone here, I just wanted to point out more ways in which it's obvious.
@notquitemytempo13534 жыл бұрын
If they make a movie with "PC" connotations that happens to have changes to the material, it's because they're SJW Marxists/whatever. If the material is unchanged but still has "PC" connotations, they chose to make it now cause they're SJW Marxists/whatever. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. When you're fundamentally opposed to something, you'll find a way to condemn it, even if you have to contradict yourself. You think he or his audience cares about that? You think he made the slightest bit of research before this video? The ultimate point is women bad. There was a popular movie at the time of that video and he picked it as that day's vehicle to unavoidably arrive to that ultimate point. Simple as that.

Stefan's so-called "arguments" basically boil down to one thing -- if your movie has a heroic female lead, then it's feminist propaganda and therefore it sucks. For him, merely looking at the film's poster should've been enough to convince him that it's "awful." While I had a couple of issues with some of the writing and visual aspects of the film, I felt that the movie went to great lengths to avoid dumbing down any of its male characters, while also doing its best to present Diana as the powerful, smart and independent heroine she is. Honestly, Chris Pine's Steve Trevor was as heroic as he could be given that he's not even the film's lead. Also, heroic sacrifice has been in movies and literature since forever. Is William Wallace in Braveheart also "disposable"?

The funny thing is, Male Disposability in fiction is a real thing, but it's not some new feminist plot. It is a long standing cliche propagated by men. Unless someone's gender is specifically chosen, that person is male. So all the faceless mooks the hero kills? Men. All the red shirts on the good team that die to show the situation is grim? Men. The Hero's trophy love interest (who will probably survive)? It's a girl. And the reason this works, the reason male is the default, is because the writers are predominantly male.

@phyrinx37405 жыл бұрын
Well yes most of these movies are written by men but I am not sure if it would be that different if women wrote those. Men are the ones who go to war and die, which has been burned into our thinking about masculinity throughout our history. There are also reasons why men are normally the ones going to war and why females tend to stay and do jobs like making sure the weapons supply is rolling in factories etc. It's not a gendered issue. It's not propaganda. Most, big movie writers try to express their own thoughts on certain aspectd on the world in their movies, lile how many wars don't even make sense or how broken a system is. If we see movies where hundreds of men are killed on a battlefield, then it's because the author understands that it reflects reality. There are women in the military today, which is great if they want to do that, but there are still far more men serving than women. That's the thing about male disposability. Sure it sucks to be a man in that topic, but biologically speaking it's kinda our purpose. Not to die for no reason, but rather fight and protect for our community.
@incompletemachine8775 жыл бұрын
@@phyrinx3740 I'm sorry but it definitely is a gendered issue, and here's why; generally the biological justification for men going to war comes from three places: either men are stronger and more durable, men are more aggressive or men aren't as important for breeding. the trouble with the first one is that, if it is generally true of male *populations* its not always true in individual cases, and even more importantly it doesn't actually matter.while there are weapons that can benefit from being wielded by a stronger wielder, they are close quarters weapons and they haven't decided a battle since the advent of the rifle. modern weapons only require the strength to lift them, the stamina to endure the kick (neither of which are much as children can do it, sadly) and training to aim, after that its point and click. if you're a drone operator that point and click might be literal, and this will just continue unless somebody invents a Dune-style everything-but-slow-moving-blades proof force-field. As for aggression, women are quite capable of lethal aggression and have shown they can do so in military circumstances already from ancient times. In addition, to some eyes, even if we accept the idea of men being more aggressive there are views of war that suggest that would be a *bad* trait in your soldiers. Frank Herbert, the writer of Dune (i love those books, don't judge) suggested in them that armies of men are actually worse because they are predatory and will turn on the people they are meant to protect, while women are not and therefore wont when the war is over (Incidentally i don't believe this XD), but its pretty clear to me that these ideas come from different ideas about gender. FInally, the idea that men are less important for breeding. This is, technically, true; men are basically gamete production factories. one man can have babies by many women, if you don't mind a genetic bottleneck. I don't think this is a good principal to organise anything around, let alone a military or society. some might be inclined to say that facts don't care about your feelings, but the truth is that reducing it this far strips the value from the bravery of soldiers choosing to defend their communities, and devalues men, women and all humans. I don't personally believe that war should be fought exclusively by men, or even mostly (id prefer it not be fought at all, but we're not a peaceful species and this is not a peaceful universe) and i don't find any objective truth in the claim that men are biologically more disposable or more violent in any way that matters, or at least matters any more. in that sense, this is *very* much an issue of gender perception.
@phyrinx37405 жыл бұрын
@@incompletemachine877 I'm sorry that my answer will be quite short but I am quite busy right now. I totally agree woth many of your points, but what my overall point was simply that due to that being the motive for thousands of years, it has become "normal" for our society to view men as the ones who should go to war. Nowadays we are really just fighting with technology and abilities and not strenght and durability, even thought tactic and strategy will probably stay the most important thing forever. The entire argument has to be split into two categories: Modern warfare and ancient warfare, where close combat was very important. It also comes down to offense and defense. What america does nowadays is obviously offense against nations which can't form an army and attack back. Therefore the training of soldiers can take much longer because there is no fast resupply needed. Here it makes no difference if it's a woman or a man going to fight, because over such a long period both can get on the same level. If a rapid supply of force is needed on the other hand, nations start doing other things. Training becomes more intense in a short period of time, and because men in general are stronger than women, it would take a woman longer to reach the same goal. Like in WW1 and WW2 where the training could last not even 2 weeks and during that time soldiers had to learn hard stuff. A woman would not have been able to do this. Sure, when you talk about individuals and not big crowds, then might be right. But you have to take both into consideration. If I wanted that shit, I could go to PragerU where Dennis Prager will tell me that no matter how strong a woman is, men will ALWAYS be stronger. I think it's hard to discuss this topic for a movie which played at this time because it required physical strenght and just the ability to use a rifle/machiene. Maybe I am just talking shit here, but the aspect of biology/evolution has affected strongly our world and the way we form militaries. With modern tools this becomes kinda obsolete but at the same time not.

Any time you distil a story down to its most basic conflict you will inevitably arrive at common themes and tropes. The idea that sibling rivalry is a "cliche" is absurd. If themes and tropes are all cliche then I guess we can't do any kind of hero stories (whether they be superheroes or just traditional heroes) nor can we tell stories of good vs evil.
