Yeah, the scene establishing that is, like, randomly distributed in various versions of the movie. It's had so many cuts over the years. (Although, seriously, why was it not in every cut? Scotty's actions make NO SENSE without establishing that.)

Actually the scene was included in the original movie theatre release. For some on unexplainable reason, they removed it from the VHS and LaserDisc release. The missing scene was also included in some showings on TV channels over the years. I specifically remember it being shown on the ABC TV network.

The "word" Scotty's soon-to-be-dead nephew is talking about is reference to the earlier scene where Kirk inspects the engine room and he ask Scotty if "his" engines are capable of handling a training crew. Scotty replied "Give the word, admiral", to which Kirk replied "The word is given." Meaning command or ok. 10 sins off for not paying attention to the movie.

Cut scene of Scotty and McCoy at Scotty's family house and the family fight over Scotty giving more attention to his nephew that his Niece who later becomes a captain of the USS Montgomery he designed clears up a lot of confusion.

Listened to the whole score in question. Found a couple short parts that probably inspired him, but those make up all of a short few seconds of the film, and even the final battle. It's fair to say he borrowed a bit, but if he borrowed the majority of it, it was not from this piece.

I saw this in the cinemas with my (now late) father at 11 years old: Spock's death reduced me to tears then, and despite knowing he's resurrected every time I see the scene, I still find tears flowing. It's a moving scene: anyone who isn't affected by it either hates ST or has a heart of stone, imo.

In naval terms, mister is a referral to rank. In the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard it is proper to use Mister to refer to commissioned officers below the rank of lieutenant commander, or to subordinate commissioned officers, though the use of Mister implies familiarity compared to the use of rank title for an unknown officer.

Yes, you SHOULD believe that these senior officers would pretend to be juniors for the sake of these college students, because: A. It's a military college. B. It's one of the best ways for cadets to learn, because they're gaining knowledge from people with direct experience. C. They ACTUALLY DO THIS AT MILITARY COLLEGES IN AMERICA.

I would also think it removes some random elements, like having a rookie helmsman who can't follow your orders because he doesn't know wtf he's doing, which shouldn't be part of a normal mission. Presumably, the senior officers would know how to correctly operate their assigned part of the ship. Admittedly, observing your handling of a dipshit helmsman could also be part of your evaluation in a leadership role....

I just had the privilege of watching STAR TREK II on the big screen at my local theater yesterday. ILM’s simple, practical special effects were beautiful to see. I am so tired of the boring, mind numbing CGI crap in movies today. I wish that todays filmmakers would learn that sometimes less is more.

Actually, this movie was a pioneer in digital special effects -- the "genesis effect" was an animation and one of the first to use a fractal landscape, which is effectively computer generating a shape from a random probability distribution en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_computer_animation_in_film_and_television But yes, I definitely enjoy practical effects. Movies like Inception are great works of art in that respect

Yes, the reaction in the movie theater to Richard Montalban was laughter...when we first saw him on the screen. But after his first couple of words, we knew he meant business. You can't get around the passion he put into that role. Nobody else could have done it.

I have heard that Walter Koenig was aware of the continuity error, but held his tongue to avoid having his part in the movie diminished. He also jokes that Chekov was hogging a bathroom that Khan wanted to use.

They retcon it in a book later that Chekhov was there on ceti alpha v when they helped set up khans colony there which was several months later and actually took place during the events in the second season. So he actually did meet him briefly.

I loved it when I first saw it. I admit the bit about him being human hasn't aged well. It makes me think of all the times in Hollywood disaster movies where the hero has an American flag behind them because the other 230 countries couldn't save the planet without an American hero. Vulcans in starfleet are so filing a protest with HR over Kirk's racism......

Spock's return was less cash and more Leonard Nimoy changed his mind about quitting as Spock when he was what the character meant to the fans. I think that was why he decided to unkill his character.

Its widely regarded as the reason Star Trek didn't die off as a series after The (Slow) Motion Picture, and thus what led to The Next Generation. The rest... is history.

That's because the system hadn't been fully mapped during the time of Space Seed (and the mission logs were sealed). When Reliant got there they assumed the old probe data was wrong.

@@0427Tink Ahh, but when Kirk asked Spock in 'Space Seed' if they were travelling close to the Ceti Alpha system, Spock off the top of his head gives Kirk a run down on Ceti Alpha V saying it was habitable if savage. I kinda think that means the system was mapped firstly because Kirk knew it was there and secondly because Spock new the details of that system. And why do you assume the logs were sealed? Why would they be? None of the other missions logs were sealed. If anything an advisory would probably go out from Starfleet telling Captains to stay away from that system which makes it very well known.

Given how hard it is for us to pick up planets or even asteroids from earth with all of our capabilities, I'm not that surprised a starship slipping into a system would have a hard time counting the number of planets.

@@christophersmith4897 Other than Wrath of Khan is set a couple of hundred years in the further with future tech that has been stated in many episodes over all the Trek series to be able to scan a system immediately In 'The Doomsday Machine' for example they arrive at the system only to find several planets missing, a couple still in one piece and one in the process of being broken up ... all while sitting on the outer edge of the system.

@@ukmediawarrior I must admit that was always one of my biggest peeves. That even with super future tech they could not only show up and detect all bodies within several dozen AU but also determine their orbits accurately enough to identify them. lol. Of all the advances I could accept for the sake of the plot, being able to do in an instant what we need at least days if not months of observations to do was always just on the other side of being able to suspend disbelief. I suppose along with Warp drive, shields, and tractor beams all powered by producing warps in space/time they could likely detect the same due to planetary objects but it always bugged me. just my tick.

Partial main power explains the code used earlier. In addition to being a workaholic, Scotty is an excellent jury rigger. To get full power would take two days but jury rigging enough systems so that the Enterprise could put up a fight was doable in two hours.

3:13 - This scene was written as a little quip about James Doohan's heart attack before filming The Wrath of Khan. This was the "wee bout" Scotty was referring to here according to James Doohan himself in an interview.

I can name THREE a things wrong 1. Star Fleet apprently failed to notice an entire PLANET got destroyed 15 years ago 2. Chekhov and Khan recognize one another despite Chekhov not being in “Space Seed” 3. Scotty decided to take his dying nephew to the bridge rather than sickbay

@Michael Freed I'm pretty sure the American theatrical release did not reference Scotty's nephew. I believe it wasn't until the TV version came out that we got that reference on screen. Actually, IMDB has an article on this, as there are multiple versions of the film that have been aired or released. www.imdb.com/title/tt0084726/alternateversions

@@_XR40_ Well, I don't know what to tell you. I don't remember it in the theater addition. And movie studios didn't cut stuff out of video tape releases. I think when I read the novelization was when I first knew that it was Scotty's nephew. And then when the movie was on TV, I remember being pissed 'cause all of this stuff wasn't in the theater version. It made me wonder if Europe/Japan got this superior cut as they did with Aliens.

@@AstroNerdBoy Couldn't say what version other people may have seen, but I distinctly remember thinking that the kid's death was just pointlessly gratuitous crap, trying to make the audience care about another _redshirt_ death - And Scotty dragging him to the bridge was just tacky and forced. By the end, I was thinking that it took away from the impact of Spock's death. (As a fan at the time, I also knew the kid was doomed as soon as Kirk talked to him) My point is: I saw it twice in the theater within the space of a couple days after it was released. Never read the novelisation. Never saw it on TV, DVD or even VHS. However, you may be right in that other countries _often_ get slightly different versions of films...

In fairness, most people on earth wouldn't know that. To most people everything that goes bang with the designed purpose to kill people is a gun and the difference is hard to tell apart. I enjoy military history and watch channels on here that discusses weapons. I have 300 or so books on history 1871-1945 and I couldnt tell you if a gun is a carbine or a rifle and I can only tell if a hand gun is a revolver or an automatic pistol because the shape is obvious. Remember.... It's obvious that you know something only because it's part of your knowledge base. I bet most people couldn't tell the difference between different species of grass, grains of wood, shapes of stamps, methods used to make a brick, types of fishing lure or material used to make a tampon, dye used to colour their socks, how the software runs their phone or types of strong used to weave their bed covers. Humanity is defined by our understanding. We tend to have limited interests and therefore limited understanding.

OK, about that Genesis Effect bit. I know it looks cheesy now. As it happens, I was visiting ILM (in San Rafael when they were an unmarked building in a business park) when that sequence was being filmed. It was drawn one frame at a time on a (I think Genesco) CRT graphics display. I recall each frame took 30 seconds or perhaps significantly more to fill -- something like that. Then a camera pointing at the CRT would automatically click off a single frame shot and the next graphics frame would start to fill in on the CRT. Given the limitations at the time, it came out pretty well I think. This is probably the best film in the ST franchise. I worked on the first one (ST:TMP). I knew it was horrible as soon as I saw the script. I have some pretty bizarre stories from that production. Keep up the good work!

For years I thought the book sequences of the BBC TV adaptation of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy were proper computer made sequences. Only found later in the 90s they were hand drawn animations. I mean they look that good. The man who drew them won an award for them at the time.

Best. Trek. Ever. Every scene, and especially the epic Hambone vs. Hambone duels between Kirk and Khan could not possibly earn sins. EVERY single scene shot is a home-run. Also, I had a minor critique about one of the scenes, but watching the sequence of badass laid out by the CinemaSins guys, it's been blown completely out of my head. What a goddamn GREAT movie.

Just for the record... Savaak is half-Vulcan / half-Romulon. That's why she never quite acts like a Vulcan and emotes "too much." The weird thing is, they filmed scenes establishing this at least twice during the film series, but they kept getting cut in post production.

Yeah, well that explanation never made it into the film, so Bennet and Meyer were fine with everyone thinking she's a Vulcan. BUT, assuming the half-Romulan story is canon, how would that explain her wearing her emotions on her sleeve? Romulans are an offshoot of the Vulcan race, essentially the same people, just living on different planets. Green blood and all. Which makes Saavik the weirdest looking Vulcan or Romulan ever, with pink skin, rosy cheeks, and ruby-red lips. She says humor is a difficult concept and is always spouting about logic, but where is the logic in painting one's face in order to look more human? Vulcans are not emotionless. They are so hot-blooded with emotion that they nearly wiped themselves out, hence their current stoicism and emotional suppression. Romulans _could_ suppress their own emotions in the same way, but they simply chose not too. They are no more genetically predisposed to emotion than their Vulcan brethren, so it was really just a lame excuse. No wonder it was cut.

You sinned Kahn and chekov’s interaction, saying that they never met, it was established in a tie in comic that chekov was indeed on the enterprise during the events of space seed, just not on the main bridge crew. And as ge says in that very story just because he wasn’t on the bridge, doesn’t mean he wasn’t there, it’s a crew of 430, most we ever meet is like 50, and that’s factoring in all the redshirts who die and no doubt get replaced…

A show where the size of the shuttles compared to the ship is horribly miss matched, the actors play multiple species and have different names and that's just glossed over and there is barely an attempt at understanding the difference between a quadrant, system or sector. Let alone the nonsense about the edge of the galaxy. Or it's centre. Or something. I adore star trek. But it's only enjoyable if you enjoy the enormous holes in every level of cannon. Trying to sin cinema sins by using a magazine that's not even cannon is just self sinning.

You didn't mention Saavik crying at Spock's funeral which would be a sin, but in either another cut or in the novel, (I don't remember which) it's explained that she's half Romulan and half Vulcan. Even just a little bit of dialogue would've explained that.

Super Genius or not, he had no real experience or knowledge of space battles, nor did his crew. This was why they were so clumsy or seemingly negligent during the battles. Without the element of surprise he wouldnt have been able to do that kind of damage to the enterprise.

I like to think that despite having a superior intellect, Khan was actually quite mad by the time he and his followers escape Ceti Alpha V. The death of his wife had obviously affected him, and considering that he mentions what killed her she doubtless died in the most unpleasant way possible on that dead planet. The years stranded on a said dead planet, with only the slugs that killed his wife and his original follower's inbred offspring for company (because I don't believe for a second those were supposed to be his original followers, and so I see the "these people have sworn to live and die at my command two hundred years before you were born" line as just another sign of his madness). The name he no doubt had on his mind every day and the face he saw every night for fifteen years, the face of his tormentor: James T. Kirk. Obsessively reading the likes of Moby Dick and to the point where he starts to view himself as Captain Ahab and Kirk as his white whale. Those are the kinds of things that would drive anyone mad. Even a superman.

@@CharlesP2009 Yeah. He apparently drew inspiration from things like Horatio Hornblower and stuff. When I saw this movie as a young teen, the torpedo loading seemed very cool to me. When I got older, it became one of those, "OK, this really doesn't make sense." The movie should have had a line to indicate why they'd need to manually "run the guns" on a starship, but then Nicholas Meyer wasn't really versed in Star Trek, so it didn't occur to him to do so.

56 It was shown earlier that Spock, a captain, did not know what Genesis even was. So it can be assumed that the captain of Reliant didn't know either. Kirk was the only member of Starfleet on either ship that had access to Genesis information, so NO, Khan could not have gotten the Genesis information off the Reliant's computer. Chekov and the Captain had limited information about the project, which is how Khan knew about it. However, he wanted every piece of information and the only person on either ship that had that access was Kirk.

You can try an rationalise this stuff. But the more you try the more silly it gets. It's much better to just accept that star trek doesn't have a consistent cannon and it doesn't really try. It's a product of entertainment and that it's entertaining is enough to allow us to enjoy it

The reason they were able to fire a few phaser shots at the Reliant after it's shields dropped, despite having main and aux power offline, is because they still had the reserve (battery) power. This is established a few minutes earlier when Kirk asks Scotty what's left and Scotty tells him "just the batteries" and that they would only be good for a few phaser shots. Of course this is also after the first movie established phasers don't work with warp power offline so enterprise shouldn't have been able to get ANY shots off, especially as this movie instantly reiterated it by the damage to Reliant's warp drive disabling their phasers :P

Actually the full phrase is "what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander". It means the same thing will have the same effect on different people. In this case Spock means that the nebula blocking Enterprise's shields and scanners is a good thing because it will have the same effect on Reliant. "The odds will be evened".

The Kahn doesn't think in 3D always bothered me. Enterprise drops down, then comes back up to curve in directly behind the Reliant vs flying "up" and shooting at it from underneath. Also, especially without weapons lock, Reliant is a much bigger target from top or bottom, so logically, that is the direction they should have attacked from.

Its definitely silly, but I think its a brilliant way to imply that experience is better than pure intelligence in a combat situation, and 3 dimensions is something the audience, especially kids, can grasp instead of something really technical. It's more of a metaphor for experience.

Dr. Marcus needed a lifeless planet so as not to violate ethical protocols. If the planet needed to be in the right habitable zone (as you suggest) then it wouldn't have worked on a trial basis in the lifeless underground of the small moon.

On rewatch, my first thought was on how it can't be that hard to find a lifeless planet too, until I thought about the fact they're looking for a lifeless m class (or possibly a couple one off types) habitable planet, presumably within charted space, of several space faring species, and is being hard nosed about not wanting to relocate anyone...

If you want to try an apply cannon (which is so variable that it's hard to apply ever).... M class planets are defined as supporting life. They have to have a O2/argon atmosphere with plant life and water. By definition not lifeless. We can put this down to script writers being people who write scripts

He controlled much of Earth for a while. Reason Kirk met him in Space, the first time because he'd escaped the war Nations fought against him.

The Enterprise has armored hull plating. It also has a navigational shield in the front that is always active for micrometeors and dust clouds. But yeah, with her main shields down, one might expect more damage.

I guess the "defense fields" were enough to prevent the whole crew dying like a similar hit in "The Ultimate Computer" episode.

You forget. The weapons, shields and ships hull strength is dependent on this thing called.... .... The script. Like every single episode of star trek. I mean I love the show. But a ship could be a garbage scow or the defiant and if it's helpful for the garbage scow to maintain 47% shields for 42 hours against a borg cube until the enterprise shows up.... It will. That's the brilliance of star trek 😂
