As someone who has suffered with insomnia for years, I feel like the most frightening part is the uncontrollable emotions. I have experienced everything from blind rage because I stubbed my toe to hysterical sobbing because I didn't have ice cream in the freezer. It's like being a passenger in your own body, you know it's not a rational reaction, you know it's not that bad, but you can't control your emotions and you can only watch as your ID responds first.

If "dying resets the effects" is a reliable, functioning method of surviving this apocalypse, there would be MUCH more people that could sleep just like the girl or the woman. After the power outage and insomnia, a lot of accidents and crashes would happen, people would be electrocuted back to life, and their numbers would be more than 2, it would not be such an uncommon event

Honestly the setup of "they're so sleep deprived that they're gonna make dumb choices" is a great way to excuse characters making particularly stupid choices that make a movie interesting. They gave themselves a way to make character choices believable--I respect that setup tbh.

Fun fact for people who don't dip or chew snuff: the reason for sticking tobacco and coffee grinds in between the teeth and gums is because the gums are an easier way for effects of both to enter the bloodstream so that way it all goes to your brain within a few minutes. Also in the military sticking coffee grinds in between your gums is called Ranger Dip

Honestly though, no not really because if there is no cure then trying to survive doesn't help you or the human race because you can't exactly reboot humans without the sperm needed to fertilize the eggs and lets be fair all the sperm and eggs stored in sperm banks all died a day or two after the world wide power failure. Humans are social creatures and to live in a world where you are the only living human in your area (because let's be fair the 13-16 year old girl isn't going to hope on a jet and fly across the world to see if there where survivors in other countries) would be a living hell and would be worse they dying at the same time as everyone else. Surviving would be the last thing you would want in this scenario. You could equate it to "Would you rather die in 10ish days from starvation or would you rather amputate your arms and legs and eat them and survive for 3 months until you kill yourself from the insanity social isolation would cause?" Like if there is not a cure and you are the only remaining human within a traveling distance that doesn't require modern technology, living longer would just be torturing the girl for zero reason because like I said you can't reboot humans without the egg and sperm and well all the sperm and eggs at the sperm banks will have died due to the power outage. So honestly allowing testing is the best idea because best case scenario they figure out it was the temporary death that caused her to be able to sleep, and worst case scenario she dies quicker not having to worry about the tortures of total social isolation in a world where technology has been set back a handful of centuries since there is no one around to be able to get any of the power grids back up and running even if the equipment wasn't permanently damaged from what caused the power outage.

I know right? It's always stories that have hopelessness that are the most horrifying. That's what I learned from reviews about Junji Ito's comics. A zombie apocalypse would never compare to this if their revival theory never worked because in a Zombie apocalypse, you still kinda have hope for survival as long as you don't get infected. This is just both sad and incredible.

Watching this during a bout of insomnia is a bit spooky! lol Thank you!! That last line about moms not being able to get any sleep had me holy crap LOL True enough!! Also really appreciated the line about the zombie apocalypse and samurai swords a;fdlk Also the 'without even a fragile sticker on the box' line had me legit laughing out loud. Too funny! I also really enjoy the way that you do manage to build suspense while summarizing the movie and offering alternatives. It struck me that some of the suggestions presented here would have, in the long run, been potentially less advantageous. While I appreciated the suggestion that the kiddo should book it actually, if she hadn't, would they have realized the clincher is turning it off and on again, for example? As a 12 year old, kiddo is going to have the best chance in a group, so her lightbulb moment was really invaluable. I've also heard of people being technically alive for months on total sleep deprivation, albeit with dementia and such, so the 11 days record did confuse me. I wonder what systems were in place in those months long cases and if they could've managed some of that without power? Either way! Not really a critique I just thought it was interesting insofar as story telling goes. I haven't seen this movie but I'm not sure I understand, based on the footage shown, why more people aren't laying down to conserve resources. I feel like those soldiers especially should've been laying down tbh, with a fuckton of eyedrops too, and I'm surprised that's not something that looks like it was put into place while the doctors at this sleeping facility still had their faculties. As far as they know this is a life threatening situation so I don't know if the tobasca training would be the best fall back here insomuch as going into resource conservation. It's not like they're gonna fall asleep on the job, and shooting from a laying down or seated position isn't impossible. It does make it hard to get up again so subduing someone might be harder, especially if they take advantage of the positioning, but that also means it's harder to act on hallucinations and they're still going to have more resources than the other guy cus they've still been getting rest. Sleep is a resource. When you're low on resources you need to go into energy conservation mode whenever possible, and spending resources is a decision that needs to be made as mindfully as possible, same with utilizing external resources like caffeine etc as is mentioned in the video. I can understand why not everyone would be doing that, but those guards sure as shit shouldve been, not draining themselves faster. Idc if they need to do rotations, they're armed and dangerous and a military complex would surely have some motorized equipment that was protected by EMPs that could make up for the gaps. I've had insomnia all my life and sometimes it can mean going some days with zero sleep or running on microsleeps. My body isn't healthy so my threshold is much lower, which means sleep deprivation catches on quicker so I'm pretty familiar with how it feels like. I've been lucky to figure out some ways to cope for short term experiences. It is a horrible feeling and your body really just wants to lay there and it's really important to listen to that urge - the body wants to lay down for a reason! Even mimicking a sleeping posture and closing our eyes, while not as properly restful as sleep, is still restful, and saves on the body's resources. Same with limiting the amount of stimuli you take in cus there's so much nonsense in the brain that's not getting purged by sleep. Anything at all that is relaxing needs to be done as often as possible, comfort needs to become a top priority because discomfort just means more stress on the body, and the body is stressed enough as it is. It also helps manage mood just a little bit, but just a little bit can go a long way. I'm a lot less reactive when I'm able to prioritize relaxation during a bout of insomnia. I'll still be jumpy, 100%, but I'll be slightly less prone to reacting out of emotion. For example, mom might've been less likely to jump the gun and almost shoot her kid, and waste bullets, if she'd even just been coaching her youngest from a seated position. I'm not saying it definitely wouldn't have happened, but chances may've been somewhat lessened enough to make a difference, even if that just means one wasted bullet instead of three. Likewise, mistaking a pinecone for a grenade feels very possible to me, especially for a soldier for which armaments are already top of mind, during the dark - hard to say if that's even a hallucination so much as misinterpreting the stimuli which is so easy to do when cognitive functions are sleep deprived. I've flinched at my own hair a;df Not prioritizing their ability to rest above all else when they have the guns feels a bit much for my suspension of disbelief!!! I'm also a little surprised they went with a solar flare instead of a government experiment, if I understood that part right. Felt like it would've tied in pretty nicely to those, uh, spicy sleep studies. I also can't help but wonder if there would've been more people at that hospital who got their reset button tapped recently given it's a hospital, and what the likely statistics would've been. Would there be enough remaining people to support a population or would it have been a true extinction? smtn smthn.... Alright i guess i should stop rambling now a;sldkf ty for the content.. im gonna try and sleep again ;)

It's pretty silly if you think about how the body actually works, but I guess they had to come up with some way to cure the insomnia. Of course even though they figured it out humanity is doomed anyway, people would already be dying (from sleep deprivation since it's accelerated in the film, not to mention the anarchy that would be happening) and most that hadn't would be dead in the next day or two. Without technology to spread information on how to cure the issue they could only save a few people at best, assuming they'd even risk interacting with others after what happened at the lab.

The four more days is because the symptoms are faster. So you wouldn't die as quickly. Especially if your body is used to staying awake for long periods of time.

I struggle with severe insomnia sometimes I'm regularly up for 7 days or so how I get regular sleep is heavily sedated on prescription sleeping medication. When they lowered the recommended dose of Ambien for a woman from 10 mg down to 5 my psychiatrist whom is also a sleep specialist had to write into I believe they said it was the FDA to get approval for him to continue giving me my regular prescription dose because I've been taking two 10 mg of Ambien every night for years before they even lowered the dose they recommend for women they also lowered the dose they recommend for men to be at I believe he said it was 10 mg so don't quote me on that I could be wrong it was so many years ago we had that discussion but yeah he had to get approval to continue giving me my prescription dose but since I'd been on it for multiple years before those new regulations they let me continue my prescription. So this is real life for me!

I regularly have insomnia for days. Sometimes over 5. All you need to do is lie still and shut your eyes for the required time. You won't sleep, but you will be surprised how it will help you recharge.

Ok, the beginning of the movie reminds me of a book trilogy called "The Rule of Three", where basically the entire world loses all sorts of power not unlike the movie. I suggest reading it, because although it doesn't have the insomniac elements like this movie, the survival stuff is still very much related.
