How does becoming a teenager affect our emotions?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a field trip to Pixar! Yes, you read that right! A couple of months ago, Jonathan and Alan got to preview the first 35 minutes of Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 and talk to some of the geniuses behind the film. This time, they are the guests, and their hosts are director, Kelsey Mann, and producer, Mark Nielsen, of Inside Out 2. Together, they watch scenes and talk about the filmmaking process as well as the new Emotions who arrive on the scene as Riley enters puberty and navigates becoming a teenager.

The little detail that stuck out to me was that Fear was almost immediately on board with Anxiety. Fear and anxiety frequently go hand in hand, frolicking in a meadow of the worst possible outcomes, with sadness or anger following close behind

I noticed that too and that is really interesting to me. I find myself kind of curious as to how the new emotions will play in the panoply of the emotional spectrum they present in this universe. It's interesting that the none of the other mindscapes we've seen have personified Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, or Ennui mostly because I would think of Anxiety as an aspect of Fear, Envy as an aspect of Disgust, Embarrassment as an aspect of Sadness, and Ennui as an aspect of Joy. I'm very curious to see how that folds into the film's universe.

Thats because fear is an emotion in control when the given risks and consequences are presented at the moment. Anxiety is what you get when the risk and consequences are still undetermined and are still to come from the future.

Small detail, but I really like the transition from "personality islands" to a more interwoven Sense of Self. When we're younger we tend to base our identities on a handful of traits and priorities (I.e. the islands) but as we grow up things get more interconnected and nuanced
@francosoria4385
@francosoria4385 Күн бұрын
Something I didn't really like is that they presented the personality islands already changed, but they couldn't really show that anything was happening with them as a whole. Still, I think that the islands were affected, but their effect is simply less relevant here, because Riley's personality is still that of wanting to have friends, and therefore that basis of his personality was not affected and so far it worked very well, as the one about the silly things with her parents or when she was with her friends. The only thing is that I would have liked it if when the identity core said "I am a good friend" that the friendship island would be activated to remind us that they work together. They wouldn't have to do it during the entire movie, but at least in the introduction, leaving a transition that the belief system and the islands go hand in hand, and of course they affect each other. Is this canon? Well, I guess so. This is how it works in the real world.

I found the Emotions' bunkbeds so adorable and once again it expresses their character as the emotion they each represent like Fear sleeps with a teddybear as something to keep tucked close to him for safety, Disgust sleeps like she wants to wake up NOT feeling disgusting so she's having her beauty-sleep, Anger's moving in his sleep like's he's fighting someone, Sadness looks more curled into herself like it's a self-soothing tactic and Joy just look like she's just deep into dreamland contently.

I was a teenager when the first Inside Out came out. It stood out to me in a way that most movies at the time didn’t. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for school or anything. Now the second one comes out, and I’ve got a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, making me appreciate the original even more. Love seeing how they took the time to do the research to get things right, and make what can be complex ideas more digestible.

Yep, this is the only time I've ever seen *anything* that portrays what anxiety is actually like. The only criticism I have with the way it is portrayed in the film is that the come down is pretty abrupt and it's quickly resolved. In my experience it took months to feel even remotely human again. But I get why that has to be the case for the movie.

20:27 I’ve heard this explained by a psychologist: This is called the “sympathetic system” in the body aka “fight/flight/freeze”-response. The brain can’t tell the difference between imagined “threats” (thoughts) and real “threats”, so every time you have anxiety or feel stressed up, the brain thinks we’re being “chased by a cave bear or a cave lion”. Humans haven’t evolved for thousands of years so we’re still “stone age people” in a stressful modern society. Back then, anxiety was actually needed for our survival but we don’t need that nowadays. The body and the brain is like a smoke detector. The way to get rid of anxiety/stress is to not “flee” from the situation in any kind of way because that confirms to the brain that the threat is still there. By being still and waiting it out, the anxiety will go away on its own once the brain realises there is no real threat. But this takes practise. Small steps at a time. Like this and the first movie show, all emotions are a part of life.

i am genuinely SO glad they made the choice that all the emotions clearly do what they do because they want whats best for riley, because that really is how they are in real life too. they can seem so awful and like they get in our way, but ultimately they do what they do because its our body trying to do its best with what it has, even if it gets it wrong, or hurts other people, or hurts us. i was so beyond glad to see anxiety making it so clear that even though she was doing so many things wrong, that she really thought she was doing what was right... SPOILERS BELOW the moment where the new sense of self built entirely on anxiety was formed, oh what a moment. the way anxiety immediately reacted, you could _feel_ the way she thought she did everything right, that she had a clear goal in mind for riley... but she had no idea that what she was doing was hurting her, and leading up to rileys new sense of self telling her that she wasnt good enough. anxiety wanted perfection, and thought riley wanted perfection, but perfection just isnt realistic. and striving for perfection, by all accounts, really just hurts everyone. being human isnt perfect, thats the whole point. and even more SPOILERy is the panic attack scene, the way that anxiety was in that moment, just as frozen and terrified as riley was. i cant wait to hear what others think about that scene, i personally loved it and i know other people could talk about it way better than me. i cant even say that inside out 1&2 are my favorite movies but ive still connected with them when i watched them in various ways, and they really are just so great. me and my dad were so worried that this would be a bad sequel, theres so many that have been in the past, but it really does live up to its predecessor in my opinion. i just love these two movies ways of handling psychology in the way that they do. its so, so important for people to not only talk about mental health and what goes on in the mind, but to take such care with it, and i feel like they succeeded in that. not many pieces of media do.

Okay, hanh on, psychology question: if Riley's mom has Sadness as her lead, I ASSUME that doesn't mean mom has depression, or else there wouldn't be ANY emotions at the console. I equated mom with having Sadness in point position as mom having a higher degree of empathy, which, sh*t, that means Sadness is my lead, too. I don't consider this a bad thing, but I feel WITH other people. One of my best friends lost his aunt a few months ago, and I swear to God, he was walking BEHIND me, and I could tell there was something wrong. I didn't know what had happened yet. But he walked by behind me and I went "ow."

I thought when I saw the movie and spoilers Putting those memories in the back of her head I thought "oh she's repressing" and then when she lost herself I thought "wow if you repress enough of your memories you lose yourself" and then at the end she can barely find herself in all the repressed memories I thought "if you lose yourself it's hard to find yourself"

NO SPOILERS: I saw the film opening night (Work at theatre, paid for my seat). Here's my NO SPOILERS summary lesson, AFTER studying emotions for 4 years AND being a teacher AND film major ( psychology). If I could tell ANYONE/ANYONE a lesson to walk away with in life for self it is this: IF you do not ask or make friends with your Anger, Fear, and Disgust (stress, bias, etc), then Happiness will always be illusive, Anxiety will continue to rule your identity, and you'll feel sadness but be stuck to let it out meaning won't know why you want to cry but aren't. Joy's hair is blue BECAUSE you need to ACCEPT that things are reality, not expectations, and sometimes that means to really FEEl joy, you have to accept that sadness, esp when communicating to others, can bring bright bridges and relationships. EQ is there. i like how what happens to the last emotion to touch the panel before Joy , how that white blur could be described as "feeling numb" as the other emotions are watching. I tried to tell my managers to put a chair next to our photobooth ( We only have Joy and Anger-kids have wondered where the rest are.) I tried to tell my managers to write down ANXIETY and put it on a chair so people could ALSO put their purses and popcorn on the chair while they take pics. I told them the kids could sit there and take a breather after seeing the film. The film had a chair, and tea haha and meditation. My manger ( not an educator) didn't think kids understand the subject. They do. Thanks Pixar. AND THEY HAVE THE RESEARCHERS NAMES IN THE CREDITS! FOR sure checking them out!

I discovered you with your first Inside Out video... It kept showing up in my recomendations, but my androphobia kept telling me "nah, two men, even if they pretend to be nice, in a year or two I'll learn that they are incredibly toxic...", AND I still hadn't seen that movie. After about a month, with the video STILL in my recommendations, I finally asked my partner to watch Inside Out with me, cried like a baby, and finally watched your video. I cried even more, intantly followed you, and started deep diving in your other videos. And I've never left since, and keep linking your videos when talking about some classic movies you covered. That you get THIS kind of promotion with the Inside Out crew, it's magical. And it really show how much impact you have had, and how in touch the Pixar people are that they can see it. Congrats. And I'm AGAIN crying because of all of you (talking to both Pixar and Cineman Therapy here)... I really need to go see Inside Out 2 in theater, and yeah, I agree with Alan, we need other sequels to represent more stages of life... Bonus if the last ones is about Riley's kid to represent early development, and close the circle.

I'm chronologically middle-aged and I think this movie is going to resonate with ME super hard, to the point where I kind of wonder if it will be triggering for me. In a lot of ways, I feel parked in my teens in terms of social development - autism has given me many gifts, but this one came with complications - and anxiety tends to be at the console in my head. Most of my everyday thoughts and decisions are driven by either a need to know what I'm getting into - prediction, foreknowledge, preparation, being ready for every possible what-if but especially the worst-case what-ifs - or a need to be liked, be accepted, and not end up being left behind by everyone when they realize they've outgrown me. A lot of my "to be liked" choices are monumentally stupid on some level, and it's SO HARD to remember that my anxiety wants to help when it keeps leading to things like overcommitting, burnout, and really prominent social errors.

I don't know if it will trigger, but I know it resonated with me so much that I left the movie theatre emotionally raw. But in turn, it left me open to learn a lot about myself so it's definitely something I'd recommend but just to be prepared for.

Just fyi, the closed caption default is "Alan: So jealous." When anyone stops speaking, it just says that. Which may be accurate to the emotion, but I'm guessing not accurate to what is being said on screen. :)

That core belief scene is bringing me to tears already, I had an extremely rough childhood with so many people who were disparaging of me and how I was. I could never do wrong. This was what it looked like inside of me, in my mind, except it was full of pain and harsh words and self-hatred as a child going to teenhood. I feel so much sympathy for that version of myself, she had to go through so hard. I can't wait to watch this film. It seems like a movie that would end up meaning so much to me, even then, when the first movie came out, it meant so much to me. People born in the earlier 2000's were exactly Riley's age or close to it, I remember seeing myself in her so much. Wow.

This makes me think a lot about my own teenhood. I'm 19 now (woopwoop, I survived!) and when I was around 11/12 I was often cast out and also bullied a bit. I once read a quote that said 'people are bullied because they have a personality' and that really struck with me, and watching this video (hope to see the movie soon) made me realize that I never threw my sense of self away. Yes, anxiety tried a few times, but overall I stuck to my true friends, kept dressing how I wanted to dress, acted how I wanted to act, etc. And now, with this movie, I am being able to put that into words, which is so powerful. It also made me realize how proud I should be of myself! Even after all those years filled of loneliness, anxiety, stress and sadness, I still never threw my sense of self away, I've always been me. Ps: besides being proud of myself I'm also so incredibly proud of you guys! Seeing the growth in opportunities by being able to speak to people that worked on the movies is incredible!

Saw Inside Out 2 with my kid on opening day. It's amazing. We saw ourselves in the movie respectively. There are some situations that my kid experienced. Long story short, we both were in our feels. A very moving and emotive movie. Anxiety held up a mirror to me in the third act that was a gut punch to my psyche. I feel this will help open up conversations between kids and their parents as much as the first movie did. Might bring a lot of healing. Bring tissues for the laughs and the tears.

As someone who’s struggles currently center around always-present anxiety, extreme hyper-vigilance, constant catastrophizing and PTSD attacks particularly in the last four years, I felt beyond heard in this movie that gives a PERFECT voice to who anxiety really is. This movie was definitely more daring and relatable to adult mental health than the first. I can’t recommend it enough. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Thank you Pixar. Also really proud of the Cinema Therapy duo! I have to thank the people at Pixar for these movies. They've made a world of a difference in my life and my family's lives. My brother is on the autism spectrum to the point of having limited communication, and he often has a really hard time identifying and managing his own emotions. The first movie gave him some ability to identify how he feels, and the sequel has expanded that vocabulary. It's a huge step for him, and I'm so grateful to Pixar for giving my brother such a visual representation of very abstract concepts to help us all understand each other better.

I just saw it last night and loved every minute. I'm not sure if is on the same level as the first one, but it's a fantastic extension of what was established in the first movie. Where as the first one explored depression, this one explores anxiety. And as with the first one, it really hits home for me and my struggles with mental health. After seeing the first Inside Out, I considered doing a writing exercise, describing what my own "islands" would look like. This movie makes me consider writing out what my "Sense of Self" tree looks like and...it's not a positive picture of me.

Without seeing the movie yet, I can think of an easy reason that also makes a lot of sense logically. As a kid, you get these new emotions and you don't know how to control them. As an adult, you tend to hide these types of emotions from others (hence bottling the originals up like in the trailers). We tend to bottle up emotions we don't want others to see because society tells adults that we shouldn't have them at all.

I'm in my 30's with an anxiety disorder, I've struggled to try and explain how my anxiety feels to my dad (he doesn't really understand how a lot of emotions can affect someone so strongly). I asked him to take to see this tonight, got back home a couple hours ago, and I had a very good visual for him tonight of anxiety, how it can start out with a little bit if nervousness right into a full blown panic attack and everything in between. In all honesty, I'll probably watch this sparingly when it comes out on streaming because anxiety was so well portrayed and some of the ways I experience it are so close to how we get to see Anxiety throughout the film but especially toward the end...I damn near had my own panic attack. I checked my heart rate to make sure I wasn't just being anxious about being anxious and it was at 105bpm! Scarily well portrayed, fantastic, keep that orange gremlin the heck away from me 😅

As a MFT student I found your channel fairly early on and immediately subscribed to your channel - a wonderful blend of humor, heart, humanness, detail, craft, and stories. Inside out is a movie that pulls at the heartstrings, because of it's sincereness of the emotions surrounding life transitions, growing up, depression, etc. I hold the first movie close to my heart and can't imagine anything but positive views of the sequel once I see it. I won’t spoil it for anyone. But the way this movie touched my very wounded inner child…this movie was like therapy. I cried. And not because I feel happy or bad for the situation like I do other movies. But I cried because it helped me to understand myself better, even as an adult who is a psych nurse. But it was such a visual way of explaining it that it finally clicked for me and helped heal parts I couldn’t understand.

"We only tell a story if there is a story worth telling". That is exactly why Pixar is so great. Not every movie is the most amazing thing ever but the story is almost always worth telling. They really care about the characters, which makes the audience care as well. We saw this movie and it was great. They really did a great job handling the story and the new emotions in a thoughtful way.
