Many MANY MANY years ago I had a summer gig on a mid-sized daily paper. At one point I was assigned to do a telephone interview with Pia Zadora. I don't remember what the reason was. I do remember that she was very nice to a newbie reporter. No, that doesn't diminish at all CE's criticism of her movies or her acting. :)

Interestingly enough, the Golden Globes, IIRC, changed some of their rules AFTER Zadora won her Golden Globe so that "buying" such an award could never happen again... And, if the Lonely Lady were any good, it'd be seen as ahead of its time, given the rise of the #MeToo movement...

Oddly enough, the TV version sounds more appealing compared to the theaterical. It just feels like theaterical version was meant as the unrated cut and the broadcast version was the original. It's just weird

I remember watching "The Lonely Lady" and thinking "Ummm, okay. I feel like there should be more. What am I missing?" Then I read the book. Okay, I was 14, but I was bored during my teen years! Oh, yeah, I could see why Harold Robbins slept thru most of the movie and the critics panned it, and why I felt the movie needed something. The ending of the book had her stripping and revealing a gold Oscar painted on her body. A bit more dramatic than what was in the movie, but more effective (I think). I could see the movie getting remade and maybe doing better.

I read the book once to see which was worse, and its hard to say XD But condensing a 428 paged book into 90 minutes was no easy feat AND it shows. Some other adaptations of Harold Robbins FYC on 'Cinematic Excrement' include 'The Carpetbaggers' (with George Peppard playing a character blatantly based on Howard Hughes with on the nose parallels for John Wayne and Jean Harlow thrown in), 'The Adventurers', 'The Betsy' (again starring Sir Larry Olivier as an obvious Henry Ford parallel) and 'Where Love Has Gone' (with Susan Hayward playing a sculptress Lana Turner stand-in). Apparently, a game among people at the time was to guess which famous person was the basis for one of Robbins' characters (same with his female counterpart Jacqueline Susann).

Any chance you'll take a break and review a bad Christmas/holiday movie next month? I probably already know what the answer is, but considering I had to go through during this review, I *really* could use a breather after this.

@@tedgruver7618 worst visual effects is kinda mean to an industry that is severely over worked and underpaid. Its rarely the vfx teams fault if the effects sucks, its mostly due to time and budget constraints.

I remember the throw momma from the train actress Anne Ramsey, i think was in an episode of Night Court and one of the punchlines was “you saw what happened to Pia Zadora?” Did i remember correctly?

Ironically that episode of Fawlty Towers is also the only reason I know of Harold Robbins. Why do I get the feeling that's a common trend?

Wonder if Ray Liotta ever gets questions about THAT scene; BTW, he probably left this movie off his resume after he became famous...
