baltimore swagga , hey, you can get a 50mm Canon Prime lens for around $100, but it's cheaply made & very noisy. The best way to go is Vintage Lenses. You can get them Very cheap on eBay & they are just as good if not better than the expensive lenses out there. You will need adapters for certain lenses from r them to fit your camera ( only about $15 on Amazon ) One I highly suggest is the 58mm Helios Lens, it's a f1.4 which mean you can shoot in low light, it's very cheap & a Very good lens. Vintage Lenses are all manual focus lenses but that is better for video anyway, the lenses with motors in them make noise & don't do a good job at focusing from one point to another, and there are Many of these Vintage Lenses that are great for Photo & Cinema at prices anyone can afford $100 & less while the L-Series Glass from Canon will cost from $1000 to over $2000 & up. All you need is to practice shooting in manual focus. Another tip is Magic Lantern, look it up on KZfaq,, it is Amazing !! It's like having a Menu that the most expensive cameras don't have, HIGHLY SUGGEST IT !! Hope this helped some, let me know if you have any questions.

This guy understands film. The "Film Look" so many aspiring filmmakers strive for is a myth. It's not about a cool color grade with lots of blues in the shadows, a really strong vignette or depth of field. It's all about the use of the visual medium.

So cool. Old video, still 150% relevant. When I did macro/insect photography back in the day, people always used to say "you must have an expensive camera!" - completely negating the hard work, knee-grinding, face in the dirt, lens scratching, sunburning effort that goes into getting under a shrub, and waiting for a bee to fly past at the right distance and time. It's about light, and only light. Light is what film and photo is made of, and using it as paint is the end goal. Your videos are insightful and inspiring simon. Many thanks.

I prefer using Natural and Practical lights, it makes it look more natural, plus it can save a heck of a lot of time on set. I was on a set once and we spent an hour lighting a corridor for a 30 second scene that's only use was just to show a character moving from one scene to the next, we didn't even use it in the final cut. I just find it so annoying having to bounce light around a room :(
@LostUtopiaFilms

+BadMouseProductions Agreed, I'd say that lighting setup takes up a large majority of the time when it comes to getting a shot ready. It can get irritating at times!
@MrBeastknows
@MrBeastknows 8 жыл бұрын
+BadMouseProductions I feel most filmmakers completely set up lighting for the smallest scenes because they feel like it's what they're supposed to do, it's what they learned in film school. Like how we learn plot drives the story, when my favorite scene in Avengers 2 is when they're at the party, sitting and talking. People forget it's the acting, the script, the story that makes film great. Not how expensive your equipment and budget is. I feel film schools should give us a project where we shoot on just on our phones and the sound directly off say a zoom h4n, then try to make the scene as watchable as we can get through the acting and story while still trying to make it look good with what we don't have.
@LostUtopiaFilms

Shane Benjamson Exactly. Great use of equipment/budget should never be the selling point of a film. It should only serve to enhance what is already good (story, performance, etc.).

+BadMouseProductions I agree that using natural light is great when you can. However, the thing I didn't mention in this video, was that I had the luxury of filming the one best shot in that room - it would be a lot harder to shoot an entire scene in natural light so it still looks good. Plus, I was shooting mostly close ups, which are by far the easiest to shoot in natural light. With long days where the light keeps changing, and wide shots where people are silhouetted against windows, it often becomes pretty essential to start using lights. However, i'm all for using artificial light in a way that looks as natural as possible, simulating sun light etc.

I'm sorry the book isn't finished yet, but the main Idea is. Sorry if I was misleading I just couldn't let this opportunity pass without at least trying. I was more thinking it was something that could do in the future. I just know your gonna get big and wouldn't be able to read all the comments. So I just thought I should say something now. So still interested?

Use a secondary camera and cut to that when the first one stop. Alternatively, modify the camera with magic lantern or get a camera like the black magic.

Brilliant. Off the charts. Keep up the good work. The things you said just make so much sense. How every element in the composition must adhere to the simple theme of the storyline or the character. Simple and yet enriching the immerse-the-audience ambition of a film maker.

I'm not a film maker. I don't have a KZfaq channel. I don't even particularly like watching movies but this video was super interesting. Time and time again, I enjoy watching knowledgable people discuss the ins and outs of the art they are passionate about, even if I have no interest in it. All that to say, keep it up man. You're doing good stuff.

Hey Simon have you ever used vintage lenses on your 600d? I used a vintage 50mm that I got for £25 and it was just as good if not better than my Canon 50mm!

Yes thats the canon one that I have, the new one, don't get me wrong its a great lens! But if you're on a budget look into the vintage lenses.
@diogoalmeidavisuals
@diogoalmeidavisuals 8 жыл бұрын
+Monshark Media with new lenses you are not paying for better lenses per say. You're paying for the quiet STM motor, and better quality build. That's why only a few are using vintage ones.
@MonsharkG

***** Yeah only a few vintage ones are really worth it the ones I have at the moment are great! One I bought and the rest I got from my Granddad, they also focus in without much noise but obviously not as quiet as the STM Motor
