James McAvoy was good for a while. I didn't like him earlier, I did not like his role in Wanted and his role in The Chronicles of Narnia, but when he played Charles Xavier in X-Men, while the movies as a whole weren't that good, his portrayal was really good for Charles and those movies made me like him as an actor. Before X-Men he really wasn't on my radar but he has been since. He is a good plus for any movie now.

I personally came across him when I girl I was with back in 2007 was obsessed over the Dune series. I listened to entertain her at first, because I cared and we were close. Then she really got me into it. Ordered the books and started to read it together and surprised her with the series and we watched it together. Even back then, as Leto, something about him jumped out to me, especially during the training scene and it slowed to show how he was having fun and catching on, something about that expression...

Johan Jarry Filth is an amazing movie

He's been a win for me since The Last King of Scotland. Everyone was praising Whitaker (and rightfully so, of course!) for that performance, but, at the time, I thought it was really a testament to McAvoy's talent that he more than held his own in that film. And, I used to find him wildly unattractive, too, so that wasn't an argument in his favor. As "girly" as Atonement may seem, his performance (all the performances, really) is still one of the best i've ever seen. And, of course, his Charles Xavier made me fall in love with Charles Xavier (which I would have never thought possible)... But that shouldn't be an argument. So, yeah. If McAvoy isn't a win, I don't know who is. He deserved an Oscar for The Last King of Scotland, Atonement and Spilt. I can't wait to see Glass. Even if the critics are terrible, I'll still go see it only for his performance. So, that's a win.

I wanted to say hi/get a photo (can't do that at work) but I think he had just finished taking a selfie with some people outside and he was heading out. Fun fact: considering they exited around the same time I did, I think they went to see Fallout in IMAX on opening night!

@@SertQuos @SertQuos DID is sensationalized in the media quite often, and this movie only adds to the stigma. This is not meant to be an accurate portrayal of DID, but people without the disorder think it is. I do think they got some things right, like the co-con portrayal and the differing voices, genders, and ages of alters, but it still doesn't do enough to not damage the community. Movies like split are the reason people with DID are asked if they are going to kill someone when they switch. Movies like split are why people with DID are often fired after being diagnosed. Heck, some people even think DID is just schizophrenia. I recommend you watch a video by a DID youtuber named dissociaDID about split, i will link it below

personaly, abuse didnt feel like i was beeing preyed upon, more like toyed with. animals act different and this net of fears that installed itself in my head was about more than survival. if its long time abuse, the perpetrators use lies and relativisation, to the victim and themselves. an animal can just kill u. its realy not that easy to describe but i get the split persoalitys while it was for me two worlds. one where well beeing is not of concern, do what you have to and fight where you can and in the oter i was so afraid, terrified even to think about the bad world. i couldnt tell anybody what was happening because i feared the bad world that much. i could not make myself to think about it when i wasnt there.

Chris Becker I’m struggling a little to understand what your saying, but I think I kind of get it. All I know is that for myself and others I’ve known who have suffered abuse (specifically sexual abuse), it created a fear of being preyed on by anyone who shared a major trait with the original abuser. For myself I was molested by an older male, and it made me feel so incapable of trusting anyone for a long time that I didn’t like being hugged by even my dad, who never abused me. It was like all older men felt like animals to me, and it took a long time to get over that feeling.

Chris Becker I see what you mean. And no worries! Artistic interpretation are totally subjective, and the same symbol can represent something totally different from person to person. I think the way I’m understanding animalistic here is that animals are sometimes unpredictable if you haven’t been trained to read their cues. Even beloved pets can have a dangerous moment if their owners don’t understand how to deal with an animal’s deeper instincts. (Don’t interrupt an animal while it’s eating, don’t disturb it while it’s sleeping, don’t make sudden movements if it seems agitated, etc.) The way I saw it was that on Casey’s hunting trips with her dad and uncle she learned how to read a wild animal’s cues both literally and metaphorically, as she demonstrates by the way she handles being in another potential abuse scenario. Christopher Titus' first comedy special "Norman Rockwell is bleeding" was entirely themed around the idea of broken people. its a very funny, but also very REAL show. it opens with "So it seems that because of every syndrome and disorder we've invented in the past twenty years, the Los Angeles Times reported that 63% of American families are now considered dysfunctional. My God! That means we're the majority." he goes darker then any comic i've seen, but also offers that it can make you stronger.

Yeah, ik its way after this video release but fuck it The presentation of those things was great and they portrayed DID amazingly well, except for the clothes, nobody got time for that but for audience and stylistic sake, its good. I myself have DID and know many others with it and other things. I love these films, my alters do to, so its personal opinion on how you take it, but the media saying that such things shouldnt be represented is just insane and borderline censorship. Mental Illness isnt simple, its not something that you can predict or categorize perfectly, it can be dangerous but its not Alters that are dangerous. Its the individuals, Alters like the beast do exist, obviously not to the movie extent. But its the brain adapting to a life that wouldnt otherwise be easy. It is truly an amazing thing, the tragedy comes from systems of alters that struggle to co habitate and people who dont understand what is happening to them. Thats why we NEED films like this - the public must be educated, do we have to be careful to not insult people? Absolutely. But it should never be a taboo subject especially when we have places like India where mental illness in general is seen as weakness and imperfection. I seriously love this film, they did so much right for DID, Mental illness, film making, scripting just all of its amazing. I hope I see the day that people knowledgeable of these things are the majority.

The broken are not more evolved unfortunately. Trauma makes you more likely to have physical and mental health issues that are damaging to those suffering and those around them. Trauma and abuse tend to be inherited and detrimental. Broken bones are more likely to break again and scar tissue causes all sorts of issues. One virus makes you more likely to get a second one. Depression makes you more likely to be unemployed and have a heart attack. PTSD is dangerous to you and those you love. The difference here is eustress vs stress. One is good, the other is not. We are not all uniformly able to approach society and the world as a whole. The problem with our world is it’s focus on success and usefulness. Our value based system causes so many problems. Just because a person with mental or physical illness is less capable, that does not mean they are less valuable. We should not be romanticizing illness in order to justify value, we need to be changing what value looks means to us in the first place.

I watched a very interesting and well-made documentary about the magic of film-making with interviews/discussions from many top stars, directors, and studio execs. It really shined a light on just how difficult the field is, so much so that a successful film is often attributed to magic because it's so miraculous. The doc is called "Boffo: Tinseltown's Bombs and Blockbusters" I highly recommend it.

While for some people it may be a sense of pride but for others it gives them extreme anxiety and can make them want to hurt themselves more I personally think he should've blurred it or perhaps not shown it multiple times in a row in respect to the people who have negative responses to that sort of thing

As someone with PTSD (from a different context though) I did find the whole trauma makes you stronger thing a little cringe. And while I don't have DID I didn't love that it was another "evil identity" film. But I don't think the director was actually going for a "trauma is good for you, people with DID are evil" narrative...I think they actually show enough understanding of mental illness to know that's not a good narrative. Instead I think its just that those narratives are so common that its hard to subtle subvert them without people misunderstanding it, and that's really where the cringe comes from... also "I'm the Captain Now" I didn't see anything in EpicSpartan's comment to suggest they're a sexual assault survivor (they actually mention self harm) but it is extremely rude to ask someone who raped them (even if you know they were raped...). First of all, even for people who do not develop PTSD, that is still a very personal question. But for someone with PTSD you're asking them to trigger their symptoms, which in some cases can severely mess up their lives. And you can't really say "well if they didn't want to be asked they shouldn't have posted" cause dude, they just made a comment, mentioning having an experience to explain how they felt about a movie is not an invite to give you details on trauma. I'm sure you didn't mean to be rude but honey for future reference its rude (and also comes off a little pervy and gross...) to ask.

@@annegrey3780 it is sort of romanticising abuse with that narrative and came across as this "you're stronger, purer and better than people who haven't been the victim of abuse" but I also think these were only portrayed as insane ramblings of the beast/other DID personalities and deserve not to be taken seriously.

@@annegrey3780 I think people miss a part of the narrative and two key components that help it step away from the usual trite "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" trope: 1) Those who were "broken" and were not "more evolved" are dead 2) The Beast isn't a scientist or philosopher but an alter developed as an Othering of the Shadow and a broken coping mechanism that takes the darkness and puts it to use. We reach flawed conclusions, especially when we're injured as children. We come up with ways of escaping or stories that let us survive and get a handle on life. The small person in a house with big people that become dangerous when angry can become very good at picking up minutiae and reading emotions, and those who survive and are lucky may sometimes seem "empathic" but there's just far more who get the cues and read them wrong or get shut down. KC and Casey are extreme characters in a comic book movie, not exemplars of real conditions and experiences, but are made to feel more real and human because of those touches that are genuine. I think I made sense?

Omg why do people have to see a problematic thing on everything they see ?? No one knew that she was abused, how could they know??? She purposefully didn't show her scars and didn't say anything about what happens with her uncle. No one knew, not even her classmates, until The Beast saw her scars THEN he obviously realized that she had gone through something. In that moment he's like "Oh shit I shouldn't eat you, I shouldn't hurt you because you have suffered, you're pure". What's so freaking problematic about that ???

I also seen plenty of comments from people involved that there was alot of studio issues as well. IE studio involvement, which always bodes ill. he wanted to make it as accurate as possible, but was prevented from doing so.

The issue is, the character was based on a real man with 24 personalities, one of which was a mix of all of the others who was responsible for the kidnapping of a bunch of girls. Its very hard because not everyone with mental illnesses act the same way, the experience is different for everyone and unfortunately for some of them, the experience is violent.
