Neo flexing the dust off of himself in the subway fight has stuck with me for over a decade as the coolest sh*t I’ve ever seen in a movie.

10:17 - I can actually explain how Neo came back to life because of that kiss from Trinity. For you see, Morpheus said that our brain makes Matrix real for us (so if we die there we will die in real life) and in the moment Neo got shot by Smith his brain thought he was dead in real life. But when Trinity kissed him, he felt it. He felt that he was on the ship and He felt that he was still alive. That's how he came back

Two extra wins: - the reason for the "lots of guns" for the foyer gunfight was to avoid reloading. Neo and Trinity always drop an empty gun and grab a new one instead. - the way the agents fight. Their moves are simple (punch, kick, shoot, block, dodge, 1 kind of each), but it's effective because they can do it faster than human beings, which is similar to how computers function (simple calculations done extremely fast)

The moment where Neo blocks Agent Smith's blows one-handed while looking utterly bored is my favourite part.

Trinity: “No one has ever done anything like this.” Neo: “That’s why it’s going to work.” He IS the smart guy here. This is a “Zero Day Exploit”, a common thing that any hacker would know. A hole in the security that has never been patched is repaired for “Zero Days” and the knowledge that no one has ever done that is proof it can be exploited and attacked. The knowledge that no one has attempted this before is all he needs to know to know that the plan can succeed. It’s a subtle nod to his hacker roots, and his understanding of how the agents think.

The reason Trinity flipping looks wonky is that she twisted her ankle while rehearsing the flip day of the shoot. That meant they had to film it in two shots instead of one fluid motion. She was devastated about it because she wanted it to look as good as possible. This is in the BTS. Also, Neo looking wonky while doing the backflip in the dojo is Keanu using the wires attached to his hips to propel himself backwards. That’s why it looks off. He does it again after flipping away from Smith in the subway.

Re: Trinity loving Neo after a few hours, it's established right at the start that she's been watching him. And that she likes him, although she denies it. Meeting him in the Matrix and then for real is just the next step in an infatuation that Trinity had already begun, days or even months earlier, through their surveillance.

One really extra win that went over nearly everyone's heads is when after the Oracle talks to him; what does she make Neo do? Accept a cookie.

“... finish each other sandwiches.” Thats Frozen quote did not go unnoticed.

Year 2, Week 2 (and a half) of asking for Everything Great About Dead Man's Chest.

Your cheat code comparison is interesting. There's an arc in The Matrix Online that involved operatives getting their hands on unstable obsolete Agent upgrades colloquially called "cheat codes" that gave them comic book style superpowers. It was not a particularly liked arc, to put it mildly. But the idea is baked into the lore, either way.

Seeing agents dodge bullets in real time is the most satisfying special effect of the trilogy for me. Especially when Agent Johnson does it during the freeway chase in Reloaded.

"You've been down there, Neo, you know that road, you know exactly where it ends." The shot actually shows the intersection and the phone booth from the end of the movie where Neo takes off into the sky... Which happens to be exactly where the 3rd movie ends, with Smith driving Neo from the sky and *hammering* into the ground. Both movies *END* in the same place.

One of the first things I noticed about the movie was that in the climax they have a character giving a "you can't be dead because I love you" speech, which is nothing new, but have that speech make perfect logical sense, rather than just being an expression of disbelief, which is unusual.

Speaking of colour, interesting to see Cypher the only one wearing Red in the introduction to the crew

More wins include Smith glancing at his gun to see if it's empty when Neo tells him it is, and Neo using some of Smith's moves after being beat down by Smith with many of those exact moves. (To clarify, Neo never glances at his gun once when Smith tells him it's empty, but Smith does. And Neo later uses the same armlock and headbutt move Smith used on him.)

3:25 Every line Hugo Weaving delivered, especially in his "Evolution" monologue was his Carl Sagan impersonation. He confirmed in an interview that he watched Cosmos over, and over again to prepare, and it was all his idea.

Everything great about the Adventures of Tintin? Has the single most impressive transitions in animation I've ever seen.

I first saw this movie in my 30's and I was a return college student studying literature and I had a *field day* with The Matrix, I loved the symbolism! When the LOTR movies came out, I had the hardest time wrapping my mind around the fact that Hugo Weaving was in *both* franchises, the two characters were so different. I think the only thing they had in common is that they walked with authority and you knew that if you were smart, you wouldn't want to mess with either of them, but one worked for darkness and the other for light, two heads of the same coin.

I remember driving home after seeing this movie with my friends, all off us feeling silent and shellshocked. Man, it was - and is - just so, *so,* good.

One thing someone point in this movie is the clothes especially the evolution of Neo, during training, he wears a normal vest and pants. When he returned to the matrix he as a simple suit, and finally when he go save Morpheus it's badass gear time. Something you can miss is, like a video game, they lose part of the clothes when they take damage: first glass which is kinda a barrier for the mind, then coat what protect the upper body.

If i remember correctly, everyone had to read some thick tomes on philosophy, and had a quiz on them afterwards, to ensure they understood there rolls and how to act. Everyone found that really difficult. Except for the dude who played morpheus. He found it rather easy. Which is a fun fact.

I love that a solid 25% of both parts of the review is just Cinema wins talking about how hot everyone is. 🤣

Worth noting about 90s ennui that a lot of it was actually heavily driven by the working class. Grunge music, for example, was not a product of middle-class folks in comfortable suburbs. Wages had been stagnating since the 70s, and people were increasingly aware of social stratification and the harmful impacts of capitalism. The idea that the future was bleak and that people could not expect a higher or even equal standard of living to their parents, no matter what they did, was beginning to dawn, along with the increasing awareness of how dehumanizing and alienating office work tends to be. The thing that makes 90s ennui into ennui, and not anything else, is that people genuinely had no idea how to react to it. They couldn't imagine alternatives, in part because of how successful the War on Drugs had been in eliminating leaders of social movements that proposed them. Capitalist realism reached a cultural hegemony. Add in a growing consciousness of environmental degradation, it's no wonder people felt miserable. I'm not going to argue that 90s ennui wasn't heavily focused on white people, with a particular catering to white men, but treating it somewhat tritely as privileged and wealthy white folks moping about how being privileged, wealthy, and white doesn't solve *all* your problems is selling short a kind of unconscious awareness of a whole generation that the world was broken and they had no idea how to fix it.

This is why I love you so much more then CinemaSins. Whereas CinemaSins just wastes our time making a bunch of completely meaningless (and often wrong) nitpicks and cringy sex jokes, you actually make deep observations that require a keen eye and critical thinking to acknowledge. Especially in your conclusions segments. Plus you're 100x funnier. Hell, even when the movie makes a genuine goof or mistake you actually manage to make either a good explanation or just lampoon it in a way that's genuinely funnier then whatever CinemaSins can ever think of. In this age of overly cynical and nitpicky internet movie critics, I am so happy to have people like you around who'd rather spread positivity for positivity's sake.

If this film helped you on whatever journey you were/are on, be it self-discovery, transitioning, opening you to philosophy, recognising that the human race is a giant system that is dependent on each other and so we cannot truly say that the problems of one, does not affect us all, whatever it is that you understand when the film said, "free your mind", this random guy on the internet is happy for you. I hope you can look back at yourself and see progress and are proud of the person you are today. Also, I found out a few weeks ago that the Wachowski Sisters had considered making a Matrix game WITH HIDEO KOJIMA. Now, I feel like the world has been robbed, I know I was. I would have played the living daylights out of that game.

The one question I've always wanted to ask is when Smith refers to humanity as a virus, doesn't that mean that the machines are analogous to parasites that feed off the energy of the viruses that Smith dispises so much? As for the trans interpretation... I'm glad it helps some folks in ways that give me a broader view of the movie in the process. Every good story will always mean different things to different people and anyone that thinks they've cornered the market on the truth of something for everyone, that attitude officially passes into loudmouth noise, for me.

Your point about the philosophical messages being deep but the story still being easy to follow is one of the reasons I think The Matrix holds up not just as a great film but also as an immensely profound one. I had this conversation with an old coworker comparing Tenet and The Matrix. Both are "smart" movies but The Matrix is smart in the sense that it could be dissected and understood as something more, yet you never have to do that. You can just sit back and appreciate the cool visuals and fun story and nothing else. Tenet, on the other hand, tried to beat you over the head with how smart it was. And although I enjoyed Tenet, it ended up being for everything except its intellectual components, whereas The Matrix still works on all of its levels.

One of the reasons you like the Matrix so much: it is so easy to understand the main story, but there is so much more underneath, makes me think of why I adore avatar last airbender. When you're a little kid, you just wished you could bend the elements and defeat the evil firelord, but as you get older and rewatch it, you find all the nuggets of wisdom the creators put in the show without anyone demanding that from them: lessons on life, love, loss, self-imposed hurdles, destiny, balance, understanding others. It rubs shoulders with other GOAT series for me.

Trinity’s “dodge this” line is SOOOOO fucking perfect! Also, the whole bit with Neo and Morpheus in the sparring program is really funny the second time seeing this movie xD

this movie is exactly the reason why, i usually stop watching trailers and avoid spoilers once i've decided already i want to see a movie i knew next to nothing about this film when i saw it, and i think that's by far the best way to see it and i prefer to give most movies i see that opportunity, in particular, if you get a sense that the film maker is deliberately telling you in the marketing that they're keeping something a secret if you've decided to see the movie, give the film maker the opportunity to surprise you

Pure *CHILLS* every time he flies up and Rage screams “C’MON!” Oh man. Every time.

One of my favorite things about this movie is the look on Morpheus’ face when Neo undoubtedly becomes the One at the end. The expression on his face is so “OMFG - He is the One!!!” Like he always believed it, but seeing it happen shredded that final bit of doubt that was there.

5:55 its a good line but the better call back is in the german dub, when the agent says "Nur ein Mensch/Only a human" and Trinity responses "Nur ein Agent/Only a agent"

While I enjoyed the sequels - I came out of the cinema after the first one never thinking it needed a part 2 or 3. For me it was an excellent total package with a very direct message. Neo can do anything now (obviously before parts 2 and 3) - he can literally bend the world as you perceive it to his will, but he won't...because that's for you, the audience and the people who populate the Matrix to decide . Do you want to live as part of the machine, never knowing more but leading a relatively straight forward life, or do you want to rise up, break the machine and take the new life offered to you, even if its hard? And that's why RATM hit so hard when the credits role. But that was just what I felt at the time, my take away thoughts from the very first time I watched it. :)

When I first watched this movie, in the first minutes I had sympathize with the hero because he couldn't differentiate between dream and reality. Any narcoleptic people would know how that felt. This movie also introduced me to Rob Dougan, Rob Zombie, Propeller Heads and of course, Rage Against The Machine. One quote I kept brought in my life, "there is different between knowing the path and walking the path". As a person who had a lot of self-doubt (impostor syndrome), that quote helped me several times. I can't wait your video for Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolution. To be fair to Trinity, I don’t think she killed those cops. In my mind, it was Agent Smith blaming her for killing them when she just knocked them out, but the Agents killed them to cover up the crazy leather clad super woman who kicked their asses. Agents can’t afford to let any hints or evidence of the Matrix get out. So when he says “your officers are already dead” he means that they’re no longer allowed to live because they witnessed Trinity do her thing. I don’t think they just murder indiscriminately… the guys at the Agent building are also programs, so not alive. They only kill when they need to and incapacitate everyone else.

I too always thought it was a mistake for Neo to destroy Mr Smith from within and freeing him but that was his bargaining chip with the machines to save Zion and break the cycle. I love this channel, I use to be so cynical towards movies I didn’t like but now usually find something I like in most movies and that has actually transitioned into my life and more positive overall. Going to rewatch this trilogy before I go see the 4th one.

Slightly off on one point of your analysis. They don't project themselves as they want to be seen, they project themselves as they see themselves. Neo never consciously chooses to look like he does, he just looks that way when he's there. Not a huge difference, but it is a vast difference philosophically, which is what this movie is all about. Especially when considering the original intention of Switch.

You also missed that while "neo" is an anagram for "one", it also means new, which sets up the cyclical nature of this conflict. There have been others who were, and others who will be, "The One".

I like how they need to use land lines to get out of the matrix it makes me very interested for the fourth movie since obviously it’s going to be more modern and therefore there’s gonna be less land lines I hope they incorporate that in there somehow.

I always like the idea that the cookie that the Oracle gives Neo is some code that will allow him to do what he does, but the code cant be implemented till he dies, and his system is shut down. The the new code is activated and brings him back with all of his new abilities

It's fun watching films now, as a thirty something year old, and seeing all messages what the writers and directors were doing that I missed as a teen. When I first watched it, I just looked it at the film and thought "music is awesome, fighting is awesome, HOLY %$&! THAT BULLET TIME ROCKS". Now, as an adult, those 3 are still very much there, but the messages, the symbolism and the philosophical meanings just add to it.

Okay, since you briefly brought it up. The whole trans allegory is, like the film itself, deeper than just the surface level. Personally I always saw the film as an allegory for being who you really are, realising your true self/potential and whatnot, which definitely includes transitioning. That's what makes The Matrix unique for me, all these different people with different perspectives all coming up with their own theories on what the movie can mean. Everyone has their own ideas and headcanons and so on, it's fun to discuss it and see what everyone takes away from the movie. That's why I feel it's managed to stay relevant even after all this time.

One thing I'd like to point out is something from an analysis from another channel. Musically speaking, anything related to the robots is done on a Diatonic scale, whereas everything related to humanity is done on a Chromatic scale. Diatonic being a bit more structured and Chromatic having all the in-betweens. Very subtle stuff, but brilliant nonetheless.

It's supposed to be a Deconstruction of Toxic Masculinity. Being a Worker Drone, having an extremely unfulfilling life, and wanting to find some source of meaning, sort of is a big problem many people have (and is not a generic white dude problem). Hell it's a direct cause to many cases of circumstance-based Depression and mid-life Crisis; shit slowly breaks you down, and deserves acknowledgement. Not many movies do acknowledge it in a clear good way tho'.

One little neat detail about the final scene. When Neo comes back from the dead and the rest of the crew are standing in awe on board the Nebuchadnezzar, if you slow down the scene a lot and follow the camera shake, it forms a cross.

So, I've watched The Matrix maybe 20 times in my life, it's one of my all time favorite movies. However, I just noticed something for the first time on today's watchthrough. In the very beginning of the Neo vs Smith subway fight scene when they shoot at each other, Smith says "You're out" to which Neo replies "So are you" what I noticed, is that you can see Smith look at his gun like he's actually scared to fight Neo. Just some good acting I noticed.

Just spitballing as a former graphic artist about the color scheme of Green = Matrix, Yellow = Simulator, Blue = Real World. Well, Blue + Yellow = Green. So could it be Noobs from the blue real world + guidance and training in the yellow simulation = Green Matrix-ready? Also, about the red touches: Red is the exact opposite of green on the color wheel - and thus its perfect complementary color.

I still remember seeing this in the theater with my buddy Tom. We were enthralled with what we were watching.

Philosophy (Plato’s allegory of the cave), top-notch martial arts choreography and execution, social commentary, the cinematography, a love story you root for… This was the first film that made me feel something in every part of my body. A definite awakening that came at just the right time in my own life (as a preteen)

I always figured that “the real world” was just another layer of the matrix for those who couldn’t accept the, relative, utopia that Neo finds himself in at the beginning of the movie. And I suppose you could expand that into a 7 circles of hell allegory, but I never did.

Fun fact: Laurence Fishburne was the only member of the cast who understood the philosophy the Watchowski's were going for in The Matrix. Also, when you finish the Matrix trilogy, or even as an extra video, you should look at Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

A tiny minor comment about part 1: You mention that the walk signal is tinted green because Matrix, but it is in fact just green because Sydney - pedestrian signals in Australia are red/green not as (I think!) in the US where they are orange/white.
