I finally read Circe by Madeline Miller and I have a lot to say! So I'm here with a book discussion and review of Circe. It is a stunning portrait of womanhood and patriarchy. Have you read this one yet?

This was such an unexpected gem for me, too! Totally agree that it's a completely character-driven book, and I think that's why it worked so well for me. I really, really loved hearing your thoughts and reflections on this one-- especially loved what you had to say about the conundrum of living in a patriarchal society. I love the balance that Miller was able to strike between keeping the scope of Circe's story epic-- because Greek myth IS epic, and Circe's story does span thousands of years-- while also keeping a very intimate, character-driven feel. I was just so impressed with Circe's characterization overall!

Thanks Madalyn! Yes, this was surprisingly amazing, but I do love character-driven books. But I agree, she strikes an incredible balance here with the mythology and the personal story of Circe.

I absolutely adored The Song of Achilles, and it remains one of my only 5/5 reads to this day. I was really excited to read Circe, but I simply couldn't get into it. I still haven't finished the book. I really enjoyed listening to your view on this book.

Though I didn't love this quite as much as The Song of Achilles, Circe really resonated with me. I think this was largely because of this portrait of womanhood that you've described.

I've been wanting to read Circe for a while now. A little concerned as I have read a couple of character driven novels lately which I wasn't the biggest fan of. I find them very slow paced?? I'll also definitely need to brush up on my greek mythology as you suggested haha!

Hi Jade! This definitely is a slower paced book, so make sure you're in the right mood for it. But I did love it!

A character driven novel sounds great! Did you do this as the physical book or the audio?

The audio is fantastic! That's how I read it and loved the narrator.
