Citalopram Study Overview

I've been taking citalopram (10mg) daily for three weeks and I had a huge increase in anxiety after three days. It was so bad I went to hospital. I live in a rural area and my neighbour kindly drove me to hospital at 4.00am on the day. I wanted an injection to calm me and/or advice on how to stop the tablets. They talked to me instead which calmed me down and I dediced to continue. Since then I've had periods of high anxiety for a few hours here and there, the last few days it has worsened again (so from about day 18 to 21), and I sometimes go for a walk as I can't sit still and have considered going to hospital again but haven't yet. My doctor has prescribed me valium and another anti-anxiety medication to get me through. I am so hoping this anxiety surge is temporary, from what I've read 'the anxiety stops after a few weeks' and 'it can take six weeks for my system to fully get used to it' - so all I have to do is wait. Can people reading this, who had anxiety early on when taking citalopram - which later went away - please comment on their experience, and also how long it does take to go. Many thanks.

I'm 27 and my doctor did a questioner on me and put me on citalopram bit I haven't taken it yet since I'm scared if it will help me or make it worse , any tips please?

@@skull660 Hi there. The worse thing for me in the early stages was the increase in anxiety - this was a feeling of fear, impending doom, panic and sweating a lot. I read early on that this passes when your system gets used to the tablets - and it did for me, it stopped after three weeks. I'm now at week five, and I now get headaches but only when I confront a situation that provokes the 'fight or flight' thing', if I avoid such triggers I don't get a headache. I would also advice people taking citalopram to start at low dose and gradually build up -if you want to build it up.

I have been on Citalopram 10mg for 2 days. It relieved my anxiety but today (day 2) my depression was unbearable.

@@kevinkev9996 Sorry to hear that, I would advise you to stick with the tablets, you should notice a difference in happiness levels after about 3 weeks. That is the likelihood, it worked for me. After a certain amount of time your doctor will likely increase your dose to 20mg daily and that should further help you regarding your mood. Good luck with it all. Jeff.

My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson just over a year ago by DAT SPECT and other scans. She was prescribed Celexa and that is when her overall decline plummeted. She became a stiff walking zombie. Her blood work after a year plummeted. Protein in her urine plus red and white blood cells. Her sodium levels also took a nose dive. I began researching and comparing her medical records and as her healthcare proxy told her psychiatrist my gut tells me that this rapid decline is associated with the celexa. She has been weaning off the celexa for 3 weeks and yesterday was her last dose. The change physically and mentally have been drastic. Night and day. I asked her this morning if she felt different and she said "Yes, the best way I can describe it is I feel lighter and more in control of my anxiety and thoughts" She's 82 and it took a while to convince doctors that I just didn't want to face reality and I'm glad I didn't stop pushing what my gut was telling me.
