The only symptoms I got was decreased appetite, slight nausea and I felt very tired but that only lasted for about a week and the symptoms started to clear up, please don’t be put off by the side effects, I almost stopped taking citalopram after 2 days but I convinced myself to stick to them for atleast a month and honestly that was the best decision of my life, I can actually live my life normally now, my mindsets improved and I’m a lot more organised, my heads a lot more clearer and I feel so much happier, so even if you may feel bad for the next few days, you’re doing this to benefit your future self and you’ll be so grateful that you started them. I know starting new medication can be scary but your doctor wouldn’t of prescribed you them if they thought you’d have a bad reaction, also it’s really important to be patient with the meds, after about two weeks I felt better but I was still getting panic attacks, I only felt the full effects at about 6 weeks, but you might start to feel them at 4 weeks, you’ve got this.

I had to stop taking it even though it cured my depression. Man it had me missing work left and right just about every other day I would over sleep. The drowsiness was real! Other than that I was really happy with it. Oh yea it did give me dry mouth as well. Funny thing even though I stopped taking it the dry mouth never really fully went away. Same with the drowsiness. But it's not so bad that I miss work anymore. Over all the experience was worth it because my depression was super bad. I had no more will to live. Now I still feel things are hopeless but I'm ok with it. It did not help my anxiety at all. Oh yea I did gain weight. But that was more because I was always so freakin drowsy and tired lol. Made me sleep a lot so I wasn't up and active.

Yeah, I used it for 2 or 3 months for the same reasons as you did and I can tell you that insomnia is normal (I guess). I couldn’t sleep or when I slept, I slept very broken (i.e. waking up a lot etc). I had no problems with sleep whatsoever before that... but I didn’t feel tired because of that - just agitated. I had no yawning as you seem to have. My doctor gave me Quetiapine after that and had to combine it with 10 mg of Citolepram; Slept like a princess, but was very tired overall. Hope this helped.

I've been taking citalopram (10mg) daily for three weeks and I had a huge increase in anxiety after three days. It was so bad I went to hospital. I live in a rural area and my neighbour kindly drove me to hospital at 4.00am on the day. I wanted an injection to calm me and/or advice on how to stop the tablets. They talked to me instead which calmed me down and I dediced to continue. Since then I've had periods of high anxiety for a few hours here and there, the last few days it has worsened again (so from about day 18 to 21), and I sometimes go for a walk as I can't sit still and have considered going to hospital again but haven't yet. My doctor has prescribed me valium and another anti-anxiety medication to get me through. I am so hoping this anxiety surge is temporary, from what I've read 'the anxiety stops after a few weeks' and 'it can take six weeks for my system to fully get used to it' - so all I have to do is wait. Can people reading this, who had anxiety early on when taking citalopram - which later went away - please comment on their experience, and also how long it does take to go. Many thanks.

@@arnkbb4656 I'm still on the 10mg each day, after about 5 months, and it is working well. The anxiety went after a few weeks, like people said it would, so to anyone enduring high anxiety in the early stages I would say keep with the tablets because the anxiety does go away. Also I'm much happier now - so the tablets do work. Keep with it, and best wishes! Jeff.

I had libido issues to start with but everything returned to normal quite quickly so don't worry about that, things correct themselves quite rapidly. The anxiety went after a few weeks aswell, as I was told it would, so if you are experiencing that keep with the tablets because it does go away. Most of you commenting here aren't giving useful advice about the difference between 10, 20, or 40mg a day. I'm on 10 and it's going well so far but I still feel some of the fatigue from the depression that I've always had. So I'm upping to 20. Side effects are null.

Clinical trials show antidepressants work no better than placebos and pharmaceutical companies do several studies and cherry pick results to submit the favorable results to the FDA when it comes to getting these drugs approved. Antidepressants have not been studied for long term safety and clinical trials for most antidepressants are a few weeks or months at best. Many have the notion that anxiety or depression is like diabetes and like a good diabetic they need to take their antidepressants for life. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even mainstream psychiatry will admit the chemical imbalance myth is just that....a myth. Unlike a disease like diabetes, high cholesterol, etc, psychiatry diagnoses are only diagnosed by excluding other issues that could cause symptoms and the DSM. The DSM has come under fire recently as it's very subjective and at any given time in a person's lifetime, they could be labeled depressed or anxious or even schizophrenic (who hasn't had an auditory hallucination and thought someone called their name??) simply because they could check off a symptom in a manual. Psychiatry is the only branch of medicine where there are no tests to diagnose a disease but rather it's based on a list of emotions. Anxiety and depression have a root cause that needs to be addressed and it's not the mythical chemical imbalance. Antidepressants have serious side effects which are not rare. Side effects are vastly under reported but not rare. Antidepressants do not prevent suicides. In fact, study after study has shown they increase the risk of suicide in all ages. Even the FDA required antidepressants to have a black box warning (the strongest warning the FDA gives) because of the suicide risk. While the black box warning specifically mentions suicide risk in young adults, studies have shown antidepressants increase suicide risks in people of all ages. Furthermore, antidepressants have been linked to violence, worst long term outcomes, birth defects and learning disabilities when taken while pregnant, increased risk of death, diabetes, cancer, and so much more. Antidepressants have been shown to actually cause anxiety and depression and increase the risk of future depressive episodes. Some of the side effects can be permanent and continue long after the drug is stopped.
