Hello everyone, today I’ll be talking about why Citric acid is used in both bar and liquid soap variations, why Lye excess in liquid soap is beneficial, and can you Superfat liquid soap. Some basic calculations will be given in regards to adding citric acid to Lye water regarding sodium citrate & soap scum
I hope you enjoy the video, happy formulation!

Thanks for such an informative and interesting video, you made it easy to understand. I have always wondered about citric acid and couldn’t find a satisfactory explanation, but thanks to you I now understand. You make scientific and technical aspects of Soapmaking very accessible. Thank you George

That is interesting George. In the past I have only ever used citric acid in home made lemon cordial 🤣l I have never had a problem with soap scum, and have never heard of it before regards soapmaking.

Thank you so much for being so generous with your invaluable information. I don't have the means to experiment as much as I would like so I'm doing as much research as possible. I will be making my first batch of liquid soap today. I'm very nervous but excited. Much love from Turkey.

Greetings Nila. Oh that's so cool, definitely don't be nervous. Just be sure to weigh and mix the potassium hydroxide outside, even scooping it out of the container can create a lot of dust and a bit heavy on the lungs. Apart from that you will be fine and never look back! 🙏

Hi George, I just thought I'd let you know that after my recent move to central Queensland, I can tell you that Australia definitely has hard water! In fact, the town water is so hard that it's horrible to drink without at least filtering it first. Don't get me started on the limescale build up in the shower! Lol. Hope this helps, Fiona

Dear George you kindly told me you use GW 464, please what wicks do you use with this? Thank you
@DawnOrganics

That totally depends on the jar you are using and its size. Wicks should have a burn diameter in it's description so look to where you are buying it from, your jar should also have it's diameter available 👍

Thank you so much for this detailed information! At the risk of seeming dense, when do you add the citric acid for liquid soap/shampoo? I dissolve it in my water before adding the lye in cp soaps, but I've seen people add it in warm water in the dilution step for liquid soaps. Just wondering if I should dissolve in the water before KOH for the hp liquid shampoo, too, or at dilution... Rather than neutralizing any lye prior to saponification, I'm thinking to use it to lower the pH post-cooking...so looking how to add then. Thanks so much!
@DawnOrganics
@DawnOrganics 2 жыл бұрын
Hello there, you're welcome and thanks for watching. You can definitely add it to the water and dissolve it before adding the lye, that is totally fine. Reason for adding at dilution for liquid soap is when using a lye excess to ensure all the oils are saponified (essentially a 0% Superfat) due to KOH been 90% pure. You don't really want to use to much as if you lower the PH in soap it will begin to break down and it won't lather (if adding at dilution). Soap is naturally supposed to be around 9 on the PH scale. If it falls below 8 it will begin to separate into goo. I have read attempts trying to make LS PH neutral and it ended up ruining the product.

@@DawnOrganics Oh boy! Thank you for your thorough and speedy reply! You just confirmed why my first - otherwise perfect - batch turned to goo. (I dissolved some CA in the warm dilution water.) :-( I'm wanting to get a finished shampoo in the 4-5 pH range...which is best for most hair. I used a 0% superfat even though I was unable to confirm that my KoH was 90%. Ah well...I'll have to find another way. Thank you again!

Hello again George, I am a bit confused about citric acids impact on the lye amount. The soap calculator I use does not have citric acid ingredient option. From what I understand, if I add 3% citric acid in a recipe that has 0 super fat, I will need to add a few extra grams of KOH and a few extra if my KOH is 90%? thank you😵

I have wonderful well water here in the States, but, unfortunately, it is hard. I make a simple foaming hand wash with tea tree, but use bottled water. If not, it turns cloudy, and my pumps quit working because of the lime scale buildup. Other than that, I love our water.
@DawnOrganics

Hi Kathy, thanks for commenting 🙏. I see, the well water would be nice I'd imagine. You can always run it through a jug filter to remove the hard components from it. It might solve the issue, worth a try 😁

No problem. Target and Kmart here sell it. I'm sure they will in the states. Walmart should also sell them. They are really affordable here. A jug with with filter is $15 AUD, which is less in your currency. I am not sure if it's suitable to drink after you filter your well water, but for soaping purposes should be good :)

Specific question: if a 5% overgreasing is used, is this percentage not taken into account when calculating citric acid? example: in 100g of oil 5% is equivalent to overgrading, leaving me with 95g to saponify. citric acid then should I calculate with respect to 95g? bone (1.9g) Good video. Thanks
@DawnOrganics
@DawnOrganics 2 жыл бұрын
Greetings Daniel, thanks for watching and reaching out. You usually calculate the superfat first then you work out what percentage of citric acid to use whether 1-3% then you replace the neutralise lye the citric acid reacted with to keep it at the desired superfat level i.e. 5% superfat. Also you have to counter in the purity of the lye such as 99%, 98%, 97% etc. The lye calculator will do it for you, I recommend lyecalc.com. you can adjust lye purity and it tell you how much citric acid / extra lye is needed. 🙏
