Citroen e-C4 - Full Road Test Review. Should you buy this instead of a VW ID.3?

Citroen have brought their very own je ne sais quoi into the fiercely competitive C-segment with their new C4. Available with petrol diesel and, more importantly for us, fully electric. Does this new entrant meet with our expectations, or is it another "good, but not good enough" attempt from the French manufacturer? Bryan subjects it to a full AutoEV road test to find out whether you should consider it instead of a Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq or a VW ID.3.
Head over to our new website www.autoev.co.uk for a full library of episodes featuring all the latest EV offerings. From superminis to supercars, we have them all.

We compared: - Nissan Leaf - Hyundai Kona - Kia Nero - ë-C4 and drove in the the ë-C4 and Nero. Leaf was dropped in an early stage, due to lack of 3~ charging. Nero was dropped as it was less comfortable then the ë-C4 (seats not designed for Dutch people :-) ) After negative experience with Niro, Kona was dropped as probably same issue with seats (also Korean and same 'house') So decided for the ë-C4 and waiting for delivery.

after test-driving a kona 64kwh and being initially very impressed, I drove the e-C4 and was even more impressed. Not acceleration-wise, but the whole chassis and suspension feels much better and more composed. Will pick up a polar-white e-C4 (feel pack) next week as my daily driver. :)

Bought EC4 because best power(accessory)/price ratio. Amazing car. Tesla would be better of course but not affordable for me and also who will pay high cost insurance due to high kW?

Great review. Have driven Kona, Niro (all old Gen) MGZS, ID3. All cars have positives in each but for me, comfort, ride quality and wind noise in the E-C4 was amazing. Battery is smaller and that in my mind is the only sacrifice. Took it for a 24 test drive on a mixture of town, A, B and National speed limits. Drove in Eco mode and used Regen where possible. I averaged 4.4 MPKWH over 140 miles. That equates to around 190-200 miles. Yes I was in eco and that does dull down the car but this vehicle is about comfort and wafting down the road. Great spec, amazing safety features and superb comfort. Bought a ex demo car as speced up with pan roof. Electric seats etc. next on list wall box. Thanks for review always the best impartial information on any car with no hidden agenda. P.s I found a place to hide my Haribo!! 😂

I love this car so I bought one last week. Infotainments are weak spot compared to Tesla or Renault Megane Etech, but everything other is high level and I feel like in rolls royce. I enjoy my ride to home because interior is so silent! Also we are going to travel to Italy in June, total 3000 km! I agree with your review, good job!

Great explanation of the suspension. Love the looks, had 2 Citroen’s in the past for comfort but it’s got to have a rear wiper for me. Seems silly but it’s a real issue for me. If they put one on it’s a real contender

I've driven cars with this fastback-like shape all my life. Some of them had wipers, some didn't. The rear window usually stays completely dry, unless you are stuck in traffic. So, unless if you are looking for a city runabout, it's not going to be a problem.

You don't lose everything in old Citroëns when losing the LHM fluid, at least not at once. First the car isn't able to get the right riding height, then the steering will get heavy and lastly the brakes will fail. Not everything at once. Your brakes work with surprisingly small amount of LHM fluid. Of course you should reduce your speed though, and only drive to a place where your car can be repaired.

What about regenerative braking? One pedal driving possible?
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 3 жыл бұрын
Not quite one pedal. Not in the way of Nissan's e-Pedal, but fine for low speed around town.
@AutoEV
@AutoEV Жыл бұрын
@Whole_Ammo83 just because the Leaf offers one pedal driving doesn’t mean it isn’t outdated. Plenty of other new EVs offer aggressive regen that can do that. Nissan are well aware that the Leaf is way behind class best and I am sure that the next car they bring out will be a vast leap forward on that car, especially given how good the Ariya is.

Surely the BX was replaced by the amazing Xantia? Yes I’m biased I still have a Xantia and a 1995 AX Debut!
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 2 жыл бұрын
It was a bit of a half-way model the BX. It replaced the GS/GSA which was a C-sector car. Citroen tried to fill two markets (C and D-sectors) with the BX, but became a bit mainstream when it came to replacing it as the did it with two cars - the ZX sat in eth C-Sector competing with Escorts, Golfs and Astras, whilst the Xantia went after the D-Sector with Mondeos, Passats and Cavaliers. Good cars though. I had an AX Debut as my demonstrator back in 1993!

From other reviews I have seen, it looks like the range is quite poor considering it has a 50 kWhr battery, considerably worse than the 38 kWhr Ioniq.
@petrkubena
@petrkubena 3 жыл бұрын
You are comparing two different numbers. Net capacity for C4 is 45kWh (and 38kWh for ioniq) and gross capacity is 50 kWh (and bit over 40 for ioniq). It is fair to compare net capacity when we are talking about range and while there is a difference, it's not as wide as your numbers would suggest.

Why didnt you compare it with Kona?
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 3 жыл бұрын
I am quite "old-fashioned" in some ways, and I felt that the car was more akin to the more normal cars in the sector, such as the Ioniq, Leaf and ID.3. That isn't to say that you shouldn't compare it to the Kona, as it is a very good car, and can be had at a price similar to the Citroen, but I just wanted to segment it a bit more in-line with the other C-segment cars available. No other reason than that. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Bryan.
@RomanRoman-xi3dv
@RomanRoman-xi3dv 3 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEV that is my point exactly. Isnt C4 more similar to Kona, then it is to Ioniq? Ioniq is a sedan, and Kona, C4 are suv with more clerance. C4, kona, Niro, P2008 are more suv. Just my 2 cents.
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 3 жыл бұрын
@@RomanRoman-xi3dv No, I don't think the C4 is a crossover like the Kona. The 2008 is a bit more like it, but the Niro is bigger than them all. I look at the C4 like the Polestar 2. Not a full crossover in terms of height, just a bit "jacked-up" over the usual ride height. But happy to hear a different point of view and opinion. Either way, the Kona is a good car and we are looking forward to driving the facelifted car soon.

Test drove this today, overall very disappointing compared to VW ID3, KIA E-NIRO and KONA ELECTRIC. Felt sluggish, loads of body roll in corners, very dull infotainment system, awkward drive mode selector system, HUD cannot be seen by driver with seat in high position, battery useable 45kwh poor compared to other vehicles. Only positives were comfortable seats and excellent suspension. Apart from that couldn’t wait to give vehicle back! Where as the VW iD3 and KONA wanted the test drives to last longer, say no more. Sorry Citroën but this vehicle is way behind rivals.
@whatever-xw8cw

The HUD is adjustable. I have also tested the car and I liked it so much that I am now waiting for the delivery. It is not a sporty car, there I agree, but it is comfortable which is what counts in every day use. When I first test drove I flogged it, then it was a bit wallowy and disappointing (but still good road grip), but then I drove it as I usually drive on my usual commuter route and then it was really good and comfortable. The Infotainment system: you can always bypass it with Apple Carplay or Android Auto, so not an issue for me. The ID.3 looks like a toy car to me both inside and out, not an alternative. The E- niro and Kona are boxy SUVs with poor design, not an alternative either IMO.

32k for a poor handling car with noisy mirrahs not interested.
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 3 жыл бұрын
It isn't that the handling is "poor" Tom, just that it isn't the car's forte. The steering is set up to be light and easy to manoeuvre, so it's more comfortable. I'd just like to have had a bit more communication from the front, but don't think of it as a bad-handling car. As I said, as a family car, it its beautifully comfortable inside. The issue with the wind noise is only noticeable on something like an EV when you have less of the usual ambient noises to to drown it out, such as engine and transmission noise. Trust me, the Hyundai Kona Electric has a similar issue where there is a wind resonance from the wheel arches, and that is much more noticeable than the mirrors on the C4. Anyway, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. It is very much appreciated. Bryan.

@@AutoEV A long and considered reply. deserves a response. your reviews are good even though you effervesce over the Honda. My view is what are we expecting from cars? Why do we need them at all. Clearly as human progress has been made by industrialization we need to get from affordable housing to a place of income generation. Public transport helps. However pandemics seem to be the new reality of homeworking for the educated class. So individual transport is a luxury for many and a necessary for some. As a luxury item manufacturers try to bring the latest fashion in the hope of sales. For the the real needy of transport cheap and reliable is the highest priority. personally I arranged my live to fit my needs, I can walk to the shops, use my ebike for the luxury days out and my car stays in the garage 98% of the time. Will I buy an EV in the future, Maybe for the tech and play.
