I watched Hogan Family at the time and was well aware of Valerie leaving the show. I remember the episode where they explained that she died in a car accident. I still never even heard of "City" until today.

Probably because if you continued to watch "The Hogan Family" at 8:30 on NBC, "City" was airing at exactly the same time on CBS... in the winter of 1990 anyway...

Thanks. I remember this show. I wish it had done well because it's a much stronger part for Valerie Harper than she got on Valerie's Family, but it feels like it should be sharper than it is (the music also seems like it's from a classier show). The cast isn't bad, but only Todd Susman (always fond of him for his St. Elsewhere guest spots) shines - the others, especially her daughter and her sleazy boss, aren't needed. I feel like this episode hit the 1990 trifecta - oil spills, Dan Quayle, AND Zsa Zsa Gabor.

You're welcome and thanks for commenting. I too wish the show had a longer run because it was a good opportunity for Valerie Harper. Todd Susman worked/works a lot and rightly so. Also, I thought, in this episode, Zsa Zsa Gabor toned down her own persona just enough, which must have been difficult at this stage in her career.

@@haveyouseenthis516 I agree. I was glad to see Zsa Zsa get a bit more to do than just the usual short cameo - she did a good job.

The role is a good fit for Valerie, but her role on "Valerie" (it was titled "Valerie's Family" once she had been fired) fit her just as well. She and Jason Bateman had great chemistry together and were very believable as mother and son. Her rapport with Edie McClurg as Mrs. Poole was also just as dynamic, especially when Judith Kahan (as Annie Steck) was involved in the mix. The only times her talents weren't served was when Valerie Hogan (her character on the show) was part of the B story where she was reduced to sighing about her unruly sons and only giving them parental advice. The bulk of Season 1 was just that unfortunately, where the "humor" was more "cute" than "funny". Season 2 is when it started to kick into gear but alas, with her firing, the show reverted back to more generic humor, which is why I think it's remembered more for its behind-the-scenes controversies than it is for its content. "City" deserved a long life for sure. I really enjoyed the entire cast, especially James Lorinz as Victor and Todd Susman as Roger. Stephen Lee was sometimes hilarious as well as the ever opportunistic Ken (when the material was good anyway, which it often was). LuAnne Ponce (ironically the real life sister of Danny Ponce, who played Valerie Harper's son "Willie" on "Valerie") was a bright light too, but admittedly many of the episodes rarely made use of her talents where she wasn't more than a footnote. Valerie once remarked that the show was rushed to make it in time for a mid-season replacement so some things weren't as polished as they should have been. Overall the camaraderie of everyone in the office reminded me (in spirit anyway) of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" where Valerie let other people have their moment to shine. It's hard to say since the show was so short-lived but I feel like in some ways it's a combo of the best parts of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Valerie" blended into one show. Other curiosities... it aired on Mondays on CBS at 8:30pm opposite Valerie's old show, then named "The Hogan Family", which aired on NBC. On "Valerie", Valerie Hogan was killed off in an automobile accident, leaving her husband, Michael Hogan, a widower. On "City", however, Valerie as "Liz Gianni" was a widow whose husband, also named Michael (surname Gianni), had passed away from being struck by lightning. Weird parallels for sure...
