LYRICS
How can you just walk out on me?
Without a trace?
I don’t hear the sound of your voice
I can’t see your face
On one side of the coin there’s a cure
But on the other there’s a curse
Well, I’m living in the larger world now
Where work brings worth
To the things we choose to care about
So, what is life like for me now?
No more easy victories of youth
Just the things we choose to care about
I know that I have more than I will ever need
But I’ve learned that it does nothing to stop
The reocurrence of greed
And there ain’t enough whiskey in this world
To ease a tormented mind
So, I’m longing for that place in my dreams
Where light brings life
To the things that we choose to care about
So, what is life like for me now?
No more easy victories of youth
Just the things that we choose to care about
Your memory
It will remain
Always and forever
As winter fades
What still remains
Always
Just the things that we choose to care about
So, what is life like for me now?
No more easy victories of youth
Just the things that we choose to care about

I Lost Both of My Parents last year they were 62 and 65 they were my best friends i never left home and now they are just gone vanished from my world... I still can't deal i feel lost and alone i heard the new album for the first time and an ocean is flowing out of me and yes it hurt's but also there is a solace that i am not alone in how i feel. Thank you Dallas for making it hurt a little bit less !!!

I'm so sorry for your loss, I really hope they are in better place having their well deserved rest. I've dealt with anxiety and depression back in 2021 and and those are surfacing again, and thank God there are Dallas' songs to help me with that, because they usually tell what my head can't in the middle of an attack. If you ever need someone to talk to, count on me, the same way I need people for that same purpose too, from time to time. May God bless you.

I lost my father a few days after this song was release. Didn't listen to the new album until the day he past away. Needless to say this song hit hard. Driving home the day after he past I heard this and had to pull over due to me crying. I know some songs or albums come out and just hit close to home but every song on The Love Still Held Me Near feel like it was written for me. I know it's just Coincidental but thank you Dallas.

The genius part of Dallas Green's music isn't just the music, it's the cadence that caters to the feelings - like the way he delivers the line, " So what, is life, life for me now?" I can feel the heaviness from having a pause between those words - when you're so distraught you have to breathe in between because your chest is too heavy to take a deep breath. It's the double meaning of the words taken as shorter sentences and then as the whole: So what? So what is Life? So what is life like for me now? Or if you look at What Makes A Man and the whole way it's played is reminiscent of a train's rhythm. All music is poetry but his work is on a different level. It's holds your nose to it, you can't just listen without being held in the grips of the emotion. I'm a singer - not an artist like this, just a voice - and I'm used to putting a song on like an outfit - you wear it for a time but it isn't you. I can't do that with his work. I still can't listen to this or What Makes A Man without crying and I'm not a crier!

This is a brilliant explanation of Dallas' music. I too am drawn into every single word he sings. Music is my therapy, and Dallas Green's music has helped me more than therapists who charge a lot of money. The raw emotion in his lyrics differentiate Dallas from a lot of artists, then throw in his incredible voice, THEN throw in the musicality and genius arrangement...let's just say that he's a peerless peer in music (at least in my mind). Thank you for sharing this beautiful post. I am a crier though.

This song hits home. I feel like this is what my nana understood. She cared about family until she passed, even those who weren't blood. Life is what you choose to care about, and I choose to work towards the loved ones which I care about. Great song.

My favorite of the album. How Dallas can continue to write lyrics that are both thought provoking and emotion probing blows my mind. From a musicality perspective, this song is so beautiful, and (as always) Dallas' voice is perfect-3:20 is otherworldly. From a lyrical perspective, the song captures what I've held true for myself for a long time, but even more so since my son died in 2018. I've found that what we choose to care about and put our energy into define us. His music continues to be a soul salve that I am so thankful to have the opportunity to listen.
