Walking Tour Mammoth Terraces in Yellowstone National Park - Spring - Virtual Walking Trails
It's Spring and we take you back to Yellowstone's Mammoth Terraces, aka Mammoth Hot Springs, to wander around the amazing thermal features and the marvelous terraces they have constructed over the eons. With warmer weather comes more visitors and a bit of construction which requires us to split this walk a bit so I had to stop and restart the camera after about a third. The terraces also seemed less active than in the past, but sitll beautiful with the contrasting oranges, greens, and brilliant whites.

I just watched and enjoyed your wonderful and relaxing video for the first time. Yellowstone is one of my favorite places, and I’ve been many times. I was really pleased when you walked the Upper Terrace Drive. I do that too! It really is the best way to experience it!

viewing from the UK I find it awesome the scenary you have there. So agree with your views regarding public land and noise restrictions in surrounding areas. Silence, like dark skies is becoming increasingly hard to find. Thanks for your walks Henry.

I worked in Mammoth Hot Springs back in 1985, that was along time ago. And the Elk where every where. And you missed something brand new in Mammoth. The new terrace that is forming on the east side of the road. I keep looking for video's that show that, but to no avail. Guess I will have to go up there this summer and see for myself.

In the 1880s-90s, Bath Lake in the upper Mammoth Terraces was a favorite swimming hole for park visitors, especially, for people staying at the old National Hotel in Mammoth. If anyone is interested in the complete history of Yellowstone National Park, read The Yellowstone Story, volumes I and II, written by long-retired Park Historian Aubrey Haines. If you want a quick and thorough reference, Aubrey also wrote a book entitled Yellowstone Place Names. All of these books are available from the University Press of Colorado.

I dont know if you know this or not but do the trees ignite or start fires being next to the thermal springs just curious?

I’m pretty sure that’s a no. The thermal features tend to be water-based, eg geysers and hotpots. In addition, the forests are typically a monoculture of lodgepole pine they get pretty dry and if they could catch fire from the thermal features, I’m pretty sure they would have bad fires every year. Great question though. - H

Hi Flowers, You can take as long as you want but I'd allocate at least 30-45 minutes. The smell is mild but it's definitely there. It's a fascinating place. -H

Beautiful Park ....Thought give you another try last few times we watched you talked too much.Sorry but you said like feed back. This time you seem to be complaining about how people park etc etc. I just want to see the scenery enjoy the walk not listening to your complaints. It's unfortunate that everybody doesn't respect the environment or the peace. Right now since they have no way to enforce noise ordinances, it's just going to be what it is until there's change. I understand where you're coming from. Noise pollution is very annoying.
