Wallace, ID sits nestled in a narrow valley of the panhandle of Idaho. We've driven past several times and seen it's historic buildings from I-90 as we whiz past. We finally took an afternoon to explore the historic mining and logging town. So many cool restaurants, coffee shops, museums, and hotels. They even have a brewery and a live theater. I also loved that there's a bike path from Lookout Pass to Lake Coeur D'Alene that is paved the whole way called the trail of the Coeur D'Alenes. I hope you enjoy this little town in the mountains as much as we did. Please subscribe, like, and comment if you haven't already. I love hearing from you. -H

Wikipedia:
Wallace, Idaho is a city in and the county seat of Shoshone County, Idaho, in the Silver Valley mining district of the Idaho Panhandle. Founded in 1884, Wallace sits alongside the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River (and Interstate 90), approximately 2,730 feet (830 m) above sea level. The town's population was 784 at the 2010 census.
Wallace is the principal town of the Coeur d'Alene silver-mining district, which produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States. Burke-Canyon Road runs through historic mining communities - many of them now deserted - north and eastward toward the Montana state line. The ghost town of Burke, Idaho is located 7 miles (11 km) to the northeast. East of Wallace, the Route of the Hiawatha (rails-to-trails) and the Lookout Pass ski area are popular with locals and tourists.
Wallace came into being on a river plain where four streams and five canyons converge onto the course of the South Fork. The earliest known white interest in the area was the construction of the Mullan Road, which followed the South Fork from near Cataldo almost to the pass that crossed into Montana. John Mullan did observe promising quartz outcroppings along their route when he passed through in late 1859. However, he later frankly stated that he downplayed the possibility of gold to his building crews because he "feared that any rich discovery would lead to a general stampede" to search for it.
A long hiatus followed until Andrew J. Prichard entered the country in search of gold. After several years of searching, he finally found pay-dirt on a stream about twelve miles north of the future Wallace in the spring of 1882. That set off a "general stampede" into the region, especially during the following year. Eagle City, Prichard, Murrayville (quickly shortened to Murray) and other mining camps sprang into existence and claims proliferated. It did not take long for knowledgeable miners to discover that the value of the placer gold in the region would be dwarfed by the riches in silver, buried in vast silver-lead lodes. Naturally, prospectors spread further and further afield.
A mining community with a "work hard, play hard" attitude, Wallace became well known for a permissive approach toward drinking, gambling and decriminalized prostitution. From 1884 to 1991, illegal yet regulated brothel-based sex work openly flourished because locals believed that sex work prevented rape and bolstered the economy, so long as it was regulated and confined to the northeastern part of town. Throughout the rest of the country, progressive era politics drove red-light districts underground, but madams in Wallace enjoyed unprecedented status as influential businesswomen, community leaders, and philanthropists.

This town blew me away this summer. We passed through at 7am on a Saturday and crept down every street as the only car on the road. The only people we saw were high school-age kids picking up trash and watering hanging flowers. What a gem.

I'm not proud to admit that prior to your Idaho walks , I had this negative, east coast opinion that Idaho was landlocked, flat and dull. Thanks to you, I realize that I am happily wrong. Thanks Tom. We had a great time. There are definitely parts of Idaho that are flat and ag centered but even those are pretty. In the panhandle there are majestic mountains And lots of wild areas. Are used to think it was all potato farms as well. But having done a lot of traveling in the state, I’ve gotten a chance to see all the different landscapes. From Sand dunes to lava Fields to mountains to giant canyons. Definitely a cool state to visit.- H

@@sissyrayself7508 I wasn't planning on moving to Idaho. Perhaps outsiders moving into Idaho are driving up housing prices and maybe don't represent the same values as you. The same thing is happening where I live in Vermont. People are buying homes site unseen. Still, if I met someone who just moved here, I would welcome them and give them advice as to how to best enjoy the state. Being insular doesn't make the world a better place.

This was intersting. It is a kind of odd small town to be so neatly decked out. I guess those who live there make tourist money, maybe. The trees and mountains/hills are pretty, but to live right up next to it would be worrisome. As for discussion, love is the best way to have a good community. Also, if you take a tree, put one back. Seems simple to me. The walk was interesting. Thaanks so much.

I remembered this walk when we got to the Elks club building. You know I just LUV your commentary. Basically, it seems that you overgeneralize, for example suggesting all the poor people can't afford trees. I challenge you on that. After my Grandmother died, in just a few years her old neighborhood was taken over by the "poor". She had lots of old trees on her street. Consequently the poor had these trees also. So many sob stories and so little time to over generalize about them. Seriously, I wonder how they make all the varieties of brick or cement facades on those old buildings. Each one seems very unique. They need an alien for their space ship. If you want a tune that will stay on your mind, listen to a rendition of "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas." Tata old bean. Ta
@CityWalks
@CityWalks Жыл бұрын
Hi Victoria, you are probably right about the overgeneralization, though statistically, poorer areas in cities at least have fewer trees which leads to slightly higher temps and dirtier air. I just kind of riff on my thoughts at the time and I don't always get it right so I'm happy to be gently corrected. Thanks for watching and for all your wonderful comments. -H

depends on whose statistics one employs. Of course, LBJ made all those ghettos and they don't have trees, but the poor in Appalachia have lots of trees.@@CityWalks
