Let the controversy begin. Wallace dates back to around 1884 when its namesake Colonel William R. Wallace purchased 80 acres of land to build his home. It is believed that he made the purchase with Sioux Scrip, which was later deemed to be an invalid form of currency. Disputes continued while the town gained steam and began to flourish due to the silver in this valley.
The town nearly completely burned down in 1890, but the townsfolk rebuilt, this time using masonry, brick and stone. Most of those buildings are still standing today.
One of the more decorated stories about Wallace is the hero Ed Pulaski, who saved 40 firefighters by blocking them inside an old mine adit.
Since 1884 this beautiful town’s mining district has produced 1.2 billion ounces of silver. That number continues to increase as mining is still very prevalent to this day. Cementing its place as the Worlds largest silver producer!
It has also played significant roles in history.
Including being in the mix for the major mining labour disputes in the 1890s turned deadly and left some scars that unfortunately will never heal.
The largest forest fire in American History occurred in 1910 which Pulaski made his mark and constituted the U.S. Forestry Service and Fire Fighting Agencies.
The entire town has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Thanks to the work of Harry F. Magnussen. It is one of only two entire towns to have this distinction.
