Drive By History - City of Tampa Television

These Drive By History programs highlight areas in Tampa of historic significance. This video includes features on the Sulphur Springs Water Tower, the Beach Park Gateway, and the Tampa Bay Hotel. This special was produced by Brian Sullivan and was originally run on City of Tampa Television (CTTV) in December, 2011.

I question the claim the tower was used up into the 70s. Before I started school in 1955 we lived across Fla. Ave at where Highland Ave dead ends at the river. My older brother and I explored the area around the tower and pump house. At that time the tower was abandoned and pump house was in disrepair. During that time my brother several times climb the tower. Never saw any activity or work at or around the area.

Wasn't it the Tower Drive-in for a few decades?

Yes. But wasnt part of the tower. Named because being in the vicinity of the tower. Went many times to watch movies in the 70s. Shakeys pizza now ABC liquors was across street on Fla. Ave. Usually we'd pickup couple pizzas to eat while watching movies. Tasted better than the snack bar food. Cheaper too.

Brian Sullivan, you could have at least asked if you could use my photos for this video, such as my interior shots of the tower and the night view. I could have sent you higher res images. I spent many summers at that pool as a young teen. Such fun and the water was cold but the body adjusted. Thanks for the memories.

What do you expect? Tampa assumes noone will sue them no matter what they do.
