I accidentally did the second tip once, when I realized I gained a new civic mid-turn so I can swap out Diplo League after putting in envoys. Neat, but too much hassle to plan when you're not speedrunning.

One more tip for strategic resources. At times you may notice if your strategic resources are depleted you will be unable to build the latest units you are technologically capable of and instead will only have the option to recruit units of the same class that require no resources. Eg, you can build man at arms but have no iron. So can only build warriors. The units requiring no resources usually require less production to build. You can exploit this by intentionally selling or gifting all your strategics, unlocking and producing the units which require none, then upgrading them with the Professional Army policy in.

The barb/vamp thing makes sense because buying a barb unit doesn’t trigger other things like increasing city combat strength either.

This has probably been said but if you shift+enter without choosing a civic then you can swap policy cards each turn, so in one turn you can say, pillage at 50% increase, swap discount cards, upgrade and then next turn swap back to pillage buff next turn. It's insanely useful in so many situations. Also, since culture (and science) just accumulate, you can wait for the inspiration/eureka before selecting a civic (or tech) and save on the cost, snowballing your way through the tree. I'll often produce builders to 1 turn and move on until all my cities have a builder loaded then swap in the +2 charges, change all cities production back to the preloaded builder and have suddenly have as much 60+ build charges at my disposal the next turn.

Even more niche, but there are two more scenarios that you can use to trigger either a quicker or a same-turn policy swap. - The first one is recruiting a Great Prophet while you have Revelation slotted in, as that causes the Policy to become obsolete, and forces you to replace it with another. - The second one is with Secret Societies enabled, by either joining the Owls of Minerva or unlocking their third Promotion, as that respectively grants you an extra Economic and an extra Wildcard Policy slot. Also good to know for the latter: you can soft-lock your game by joining Owls as Kublai Khan with only Code of Laws researched, as that causes you to have three Economic Policy slots to be filled, and only two cards to fill them.

oh yeah those are both super niche - i probably should have just said "whenever something happens that causes you to lose a policy card" instead of just a government!

The vast majority of Policies becomes obsolete because you just unlocked a new Civic (which either upgrades, replaces, or simply discards old ones), which automatically triggers a reset of Government, so that probably wouldn't work. The others that also work are the 4 wonders that award extra Policies: Alhambra, Big Ben, Potala Palace, and the Forbidden City

#6 doesn't really surprise me, as buying barbarian clan units does NOT increase the city strenght too! (also noticable in the clip but not mentioned)

I don't know what causes this, but in my game the future era tech tree has always the same layout even if the path is different, so I always know which tech is which. Furthermore the tech tree you had in the first section had the exact same layout my games always have. Maybe just a coincedence, or you might also have this static tech tree now. (again, the layout in which those techs are shown is the same, the actual path is, like intended, random) Another strategy that exploits the completely broken pillage mechanic, is capturing ai cities, building multiple mines and letting those cities flip to pillage -> retake -> repair mines with builders -> repeat. It's really stupid, even 1 good flip city can net 1-2k gold a turn in medieval-renaissance era, which is why it's basicly a staple in my SV speedruns. Noteably Harald get's science from pillages... which is why my fastest win was a 113 with him on that same tsl challenge ducks did his babylon game.

Vampires goes off your researched melee unit like district defences. You don’t need to build swordsmen, you just have to research them.

wouldn't it be easier to just use a mod that gives you (and not the AI) bonus starting gold? and if you want to win on turn 2, just set the max number of turns to 2, when setting up the game (point victory). Hint: play Russia.
