Best tutorial I've seen by far. I noticed that at the end when you were setting up Frontend actions, there was an option for adding a map. I have been trying to add a map i made with worldbuilder to the game for a while but haven't had any luck. Do you know of a way I can add it using this feature?

Thanks! I've gotten it to work flawlessly. However, I was wondering if you also know how to replace the 3D leader on the diplomacy screen. I re-skinned a leader for using it with a new civilization (uses old animations still etc), so would you happen to know how I link this re-skinned leader to my new civ?

A more advanced tutorial would help. Units, buildings, etc. How do I make my unique civ building be an improvement type of building vs a city center building? What I want to do is make a leader that can make cannabis. Unique unit is a weed farmer that can create or delete a cannabis luxury (that's the civ's unique building/improvement) resource on pretty much any tile, infinite times, but can't improve other tiles. Every weed corporation (3 luxuries) allows a new weed farmer. Then I want my civ ability to be like every city with a domestic trade route receives double amenities. Just more general complicated mechanics and tips how to set things up that I have no clue how to change the values of without messing everything up on this software would help

For everyone saying they cant open the file, just get winrar or something. RAR files arent anything new. Great tutorial! Was able to get my first custom civ running thanks to you!

I'm new to modding but this is extremely helpful. If I want to add multiple new civs do I have to change all of the references of "custom" to whatever I define it as?

Yeah, so LEADER_JRA_CUSTOM_LEADER Would Become LEADER_ABC_THISGUY, make sure you replace using ctrl-H and you choose the selection to take place in the entire project, not just that 1 open file

The thing is: I'm trying to create a mod to add president Dilma Rousseff and an alternate brazilian civilization with specific texts and icons. But the main problem until now is that I cannot figure out how to add the traits I want for the leader: +1 production from every building in the Campus District and +1 housing from the granary. Do you happen to know how to help me?

I don't know how far your expertise ranges on Civilization modding, but if I wanted to make a custom improvement and just use the Outback Station for the mesh/textures, how would I go about that? Or, if it would just be easier to make my own, how would I go about doing that?

Download another mod (JFD's are good) and look at how he's done it, then adapt his code to suit your own needs.

When I downloaded Development Tools the first time, it made me install some kind of Visual Studios shell (2013 I think?) before I could open ModBuddy. The only problem is that ModBuddy proceeds to crash after moving the mouse a little or clicking something while opened, so it’s effectively useless. I cannot open ModBuddy in a newer version of video studios (2017), even after uninstalling the old one. (Not sure if any files are hiding though.) It always tries to run with the old version and just continues to freeze incessantly. So I have no way to get ModBuddy to work, and I’m kinda bummed out. Do you have any idea how to fix this? @Josh Atkins

First time trying this, video was really helpful and easy to follow. After doing a basic setup and doing all the art, game text, etc, when I went in game to test it I did something wrong. All pictures were question marks, I've read the quick fixes on that and will double check, but the other thing that happened was it erased all my in game text (dialogue, city names, you know) and put it back to what was in your template. Any ideas? Also, one thing I wasn't clear about from the video...when I use ctrl-h to rename things, does this rename everything? Or do I need to manually rename all image and dialogue things, as well. Sorry if this is really basic stuff, just trying to figure it out.

I troubleshooted those issues, new one's arose. However I was able to figure it out and now have a custom civ made. Thanks!

SempaiEnigma make sure to check, double check, and then triple check all the references are accurate. After doing all that I was still having the "?" icons, last step for me was replacing the modart file from the program and replacing it with the modart file provided with the template. All pictures worked and have worked from that point on. Hope that helps.

There should be 2 colons. You might need to overwrite the art file in your project with the one from the template.

Ok, I didn't see an answer to this anywhere else, so I'll throw my fix. I am new to modding, so I these are pretty much just guesses to where the bug is. Still, it fixed it for me The double colon is not the issue, even if it says it is. You can close all the files, build again, and the colon errors are gone. Under all the colon errors you should have a couple different errors, these are the actual issues. So, what I did: 0. (Disabled all addons, not sure if this affects anything) 1. Revert all the changes I did around the project. Most likely the issue is because of the JRA_CUSTOM_CIV mass search & replaces. Thank god for git 2. Replace the Mod.Art.xml with the one that came from the package. Then swap my own name & id at the top, no other changes. 3. Clean & build. Now, I essentially have the Wales mod, and nothing of my own. I'll probably start doing small edits at a time to see what might cause build errors and what is harmless.

Hey I think I figured out why everyone was getting that really long error and the UIleaders.xlp error. or at least these where the ones I was getting. I tried about 14 different variations restarting the mod each time. this time I deleted the mod.art.xml file then imported the one from the template. I don't know if that changed anything with the code but it fixed all the errors I was having.

ok, so I've never modded a game before so please don't shoot me for being inept at this. So you change the name of your Civ for loc_civilization_name (for you Wales) and loc_civilization_adjective (Welsh) but what am I supposed to do for the "description" that appears under each one?

I wanted to request can you do a tutorial on how to mod improvements? I wanted to make a mod to allow farming on a flat desert tile. I know we can just change the yield of the tiles to something else, but I want to add the immersion of improving the tile instead; I just don't know where to start. ^^;

I'm having trouble getting the art to work, every time I load the game the art is just question marks. I checked the paths and everything checks out, I didn't change anything and made sure it was in the A8B... format etc. Also, I would really like to make a unit to go with my civ, if I may request another video, it would be how to make units and use modifiers. May have made a comment about this yesterday when I first watched the video before I started actually making the civ, but whatever... Can you explain what you mean at 19:10? I changed CUSTOM or whatever it said as a generic civ name and generic leader name. I changed it to my own civ's name and leader's name, and I changed it in every file in the project. As far as I know, the only part that didn't change was the icon file names part. Should I now change all the icon file names to my leader's name (written in the same way)? I'm assuming that's what you meant in the video? In addition to that, is there anything else I need to do after changing the generic civ name to my own custom civ's name? e.g. any more file names to change?

Change every file and every reference in those files. Crtl-H scoped to the entire project will be a life saver. Nothing is named accidentally.

Thank you, I changed the file names and loaded my civ for the first time. I'm noticing a few problems though. First, the description text of my leader/civ abilities on the civilization select screen and the loading screen appear as LOC_blahblahblah. My unique building's text works fine though, for some reason. Next, none of my art is working. The colours work but not the art. It shows a question mark wherever my custom-made art should be appearing and I don't know why. I have read through the comments on this video and someone named 'Aminoff' had the same problem as me with their own custom art, but I don't understand their explanation of how they fixed it. Do you know what the problem may be? (I was mostly worried that my unique leader/civ bonuses wouldn't work, but they actually worked first try so I'm happy about that :D still have more to add though)

Where in the game files would I find the text prompts for the leader traits and modifiers? I have checked \steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization VI\Base\ArtDefs and then several documents such as "leaders" and "civilizations". But if I search for any specific, existing civilizations (Egypt, Cleopatra, Scythia, Teddy, etc.) nothing shows up. So I can't find the text from the wildcards, policies or other leaders. I have done a lot of googling, but without learning where to locate this information. Any help would be much appreciated!

a bit late but in case youre looking for modded civs, those arent in /Base/ but in /DLC/ - Scythia for example is present in the Civilizations.artdef file

hey josh, im trying to make a civilization and i cant open any of the files in the textures folder. i tried using my photoshop - cant see the files. tried using normal paint - cant see. paint.net - nothing. any way to fix this or im stuck with this?

Hey, Even if I don't change anything and take your Wales, it won't show me any icons /portrait of the civilization in the game. I am pretty sure that I did everything like you. I couldn't detect any errors in the log files... Could you please help me? Thank you :)

Just posting this to let you know you're not the only one. Me and a few others seem to have the same problem as you. If I ever fix it somehow, I will tell you how I did it, but I really doubt I'll ever find a fix on my own.

ThatOtherGuy i guess I found. I went throught every step again . this time I also imported the mod.Art.XML from the template and replaced the default one.(I thought it was empty and you didnt need to import it, well it was in a .rar XD). Changing the Name and the ID of the newly imported mod.Art.XML and everything worked fine for me. EDIT: I found a hint that you need a changed mod.Art.XML in the mod part of this forum: www.civfanatics.com so if you have an issue, try looking there for a solution.

Fantastic video! Was also wondering with traits and all that if there was a glossary that explained what each possible change does? I've seen mods with very specific character traits, and I'm hoping to create a Civ with that depth of traits.

Hello! Sorry to bother you. (Especially about something that's over a year old.) But... All the files are labeled / titled custom. Is there a file which points to all of the files which are part of mod? Something, for example, essentially one level up which tells the engine where to locate everything? I want to name all the files with the name of my civilization, rather than with the name already specified.

Okay, maybe I'm an idiot, but something just occurred to me. I was thinking about your tutorial and it seems to me that we can basically name the files anything because we use the front-end and in-game actions to actually add our sql into the appropriate databases. Right?

I've been following this guide a few times but I've never gotten it to work properly. So I decided to not edit any of your files (since they are all from your Wales example) and keep the code you left, just to see where I went wrong. The mod loads fine and is playable, but all custom pictures and icons do not work. (I've opened them with gimp and they are all the same as what you made them to be), and this is without even touching the original files. How come?

Interesting. My art isn't working for either of my 2 custom civs, and I was going to try loading a mod without editing the template but was simply too lazy haha. At least I now know I'm not doing anything wrong -- looks like it might be a problem with the template itself?

Ok, I figured out part (or all) of it with the help of another KZfaq user who had the same problem, and with the help of a few users on the civfanatics forum. For those who are looking to this comment for help, this comment SHOULD fix a problem where your custom artwork and icons do not work (shows a question mark, etc.) Note that I am new to modding and won't be able to help you beyond this; in fact, this may not even work for you at all. But it's worth trying what I did. I'm not sure whether you fixed it on your own already, karl95hansson; but just in case you didn't (and even if you did, since this will help other people too), here is what I did to fix most of it: First, a civfanatics forum user told me to include parts of this code in my ModArt file: The structure for this code is already included, so don't just copy and paste the above code. Just insert the parts that are missing. Unfortunately this was not enough to fix my problem. Next, a youtube user said he used the downloaded template's mod art file, and it worked (he was having the same problem as me, turns out that he just didn't use the exact mod art file in the template provided). Instead of just importing that file, I found where the differences were. This will probably be the easier method, compared to importing it and having to change stuff again, like the mod's ID thing. The problem lies under , just like before. To fix it, just copy what is written in relativePackagePaths into your own modart file. This should fix most, or all, of the art issues. The reason I say "most" is because I'm still having an issue where if I click on my custom leader in-game to speak to them, it shows Cleopatra on a black background. I think this error is still occurring because since I changed the art file names from leader_custom and civ_custom, I thought I should change LEADER_blahblahblah under relativePackagePaths too. I think I just didn't change it to the right thing, or maybe changing it isn't necessary at all. I will re-test this out later and comment on here again once I get all the art to work properly. Hope this helped anyone that had the same issue as me.

hmm, I did what you said and it worked, but only for the leader itself (so only the FALLBACK_NEUTRAL_LEADER_CUSTOM.dds and LEADER_LEADER_CUSTOM_NEUTRAL.dds files). The background and icons still don't work.

Kinda specific question, but I can't figure it out; if I wanted to make a civilization's trait that it gained 10% of a city's science output as production (MODIFIER_PLAYER_GRANT_YIELD_BASED_ON_CURRENT_YIELD_RATE), which arguments would I have to create?

That's quite specific. The best I can say is look in the default game files and find similar traits to learn the structure. there is no reference or guide, only reverse engineering.

Hello! I need your help again. I've tried doing this three times, each time getting the same problem. After clicking on the build, I get these four errors. 1 & 2) Multiple colons are not allowed in an XML name according to the XML Namespace specification. 3) (UIErrorTexture) and 4) The command ""C:\Program Files (x86)\...\XLPs\Icons.xlp"" exited with code -1. PLEASE help. And if anyone is able to fill me in with how to fix it, that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I was going through this, and I noticed that the custom civ won't even load with the Gathering Storm ruleset...only in Standard Rules will it even recognize the existence, even though the Mods list says it's here. How do I apply the civ to all the different rule types, and not just standard? The text works, but the graphics referenced a different character from the stock game, leading to all sorts of weirdness involving wonky proportions, and the leader face being someone else. Where is the reference file? Mod.Art.xml - this one has an error from the portion and it says "Multiple colons are not allowed in an XML name according to the XML Namespace specification." So I tried different formatting styles with one colon, and no colon (having it all nested like the rest of the code), but none of that seemed to work.

However, he does not explain as much in depth and has a differently laid out template (specifically for Gathering Storm). This video gives great tips on where assets are and other info that is critical, so rewatch this for game files and other tidbits.

The site where you put the download link is not only sketchy but when I press download it just opens a new tab and the original tab has an ad for some mobile game. Furthermore it doesn't download.

cant seem to work out how this mod thing stores data, move to the folder, delete the stuff fine, wanna add it, has to be done from the thing being open not drag drop, copy paste.... thats painfully weird

I get this error whenever I build it, EXEC(0,0): error asset: (UIErrorTexture) and I get it twice, do you know how to fix it? it does say ========== Build: 1 succeeded or up-to-date, 0 failed, 0 skipped ========== after both errors but I don't see the modded civ, even though I see it in additional content

im looking to bind a military slot to writing and scientific theory, a wildcard slot to satelites culter bonuses from mountain tiles and a unique wonder that places a snow peaked mountain. fucks sake i wish i knew some modders :(

Sometimes the dependency file doesn't build correctly, that's usually the main cause of textures/icons not loading despite the game loading the mod correctly.

yeah, my civ is not showing as an option even though i got no errors and the mod is enabled in the menu.

What should one do if the project builds without any errors, and the mod appears in the additional content list, but the civilization does not appear in the list of civilizations during game setup? Or in other words, what could cause this problem?

Go into your log files, something like: documents/mygames/civ6/logs and read gameplay, database and mods .log to find the error.

I hadn't thought to do that. The database log is stating unique constraint failed, and references a flurry of different things. The modding log is stating errors loading multiple SQL and XML files. But it isn't giving any information beyond that. I've copied your template exactly, and I've also made some of my own, and none of them are working. I have no idea what the problem is. I guess I'll fiddle around hitting wrenches against things until something works.

Yeah it's not an exact science as there is no user friendly tools or guides, it is only what we can reverse engineer or get to work by sheer trial and error, took me about 8 hours to get my own working when I first started.

I think I've isolated the problem to the .tex files which accompany the .dds files in the Textures folder. But I still haven't been able to figure out what it's complaining about. Can you think of anything in those files that might be causing errors?

The whole Visual studio/ModBuddy is totally glitched out and giving errors for instance, at part 17:30 I only get a text "00190FF FF FF FF FF FF FF ...................." instead of the painter tool

Hey, about a month ago I followed your tutorial to make an Andorra mod. I had some issues that I didn't know how to fix: my custom artwork doesn't work, and I'm getting an error in the Database.log that says "no such table: Types" in the Buildings file. Fast forward to today, where I put the Andorra mod 'on hold' and created my own Madagascar mod following your tutorial once more. I am having the SAME ISSUES! I was hoping you could help me out. Note that the Database.log says nothing about the custom art that I made. When I say 'my custom artwork doesn't work', I mean that where you should see my custom artwork, it shows a question mark icon, etc. Any ideas? I really want to make my own fully-functioning mod but am not sure how to deal with these issues. Thanks in advance
