Jackson in the Shenandoah is an account of Stonewall Jackson's classic 1862 campaign. Written and hosted by Nationally Known Civil War Historian and pre-eminent Jackson Biographer James I. Robertson, Jr. Stonewall Jackson : The Man, The Soldier, The Legend, Robertson's book, is considered by some to be one of the most well researched and well written biographies, period. Jackson applied audacity, speed, and surprise brilliantly that spring of 1862. Professor Robertson retraces the 600 miles Jackson's "foot cavalry" covered to fight 5 major battles and numerous skirmishes with odds of 3 to 1 against them. In the process he defeated three Union Generals and caused total dislocation of the Federal Offensive on Richmond. The South was in need of victories and heroes, they found both in Jackson in the Shenandoah. ‪@BlueRidgeStreaming‬

I agree…I had the pleasure of taking One of Bud’s classes in the early 2000s. I was a finance major, but I loved the civil war so much, that I took it anyway. He would lecture without notes, in such a conversational manner, that it kept everyone interested.

VMI Grad here. I grew up on the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley, not far north of New Market. I graduated from high school in Woodstock, Virginia and attended the Institute. Needless to say, I grew up on the legend of this man and walked in the echoes of his footsteps as a cadet. It’s shameful that in recent years his memory has been so sorely mistreated. His statue, that we cadets saluted as rats on the way out of the arch in barracks that bore his name, stands guard over the battlefield at New Market. I salute it to this day. Tom Jackson was recalling his boyhood home at Jackson Mill, with his bachelor uncles. One uncle gave Tom Jackson a boat; that was used as transport to a wooded island. The island was a place for a quiet boy, to be alone with his thoughts. So, on his death-bed, Stonewall Jackson’s mind went back to Jackson’s Mill; where he could cross over the river to rest in the shade of the trees.

I had the pleasure of operating the original Union issue rifle- did well at range....the man next to me offered his excellent copy of the Confederate issue rifle, I hit bullseye after bullseye with it like it was easy.....after that day I get so much more from this important History.

If anyone wants to talk like Robertson, the key is to silence any "r" that follows a vowel (a, e ,i, o and u). I think Virginians call it a "tidewater" accent. I never could understand how such a relatively small, sparsely populated area could have developed such a unique speech pattern.

This man was wonderful 😁 Can’t wait to start ready the 3 volume books The Civil War by Shelby Foote. It’s a shame these days you have to look for the true history. This is a wonderful video series of the civil war. Sad that this man and Shelby Foote are gone from us.

@@peterschief9778 Foote and his wife, are in Forrest and his wife former resting place next to Jeffrey Forrest. That's Nathan's brother who was killed at Okalona,MS. in '64. I can't remember the cemetery,but l found out the location when l was in Memphis one day while l was there. First author"s grave l ever visited! DEO VINDICE

I've spent a half century periodically examining the American Civil War, in book, magazines, documentaries, and other sources. I did read Shelby Foote's Trilogy (cover-to-cover), which gives anyone a well-rounded knowledge of the war.

Seems the commanders of those three U.S. armies were so intent on finding Jackson, they completely forget that he might also be looking for them instead of retreating his tiny force; as any lesser man would have done. As a former Regular Army officer I know that no engagement is worse than an unexpected one, and that's what Jackson brought to the table. Superior enemy numbers are not superior when divided piecemeal, especially in an age when communication and coordination moved at the speed of a horse. Of course a smaller, lightly equipped force under unified command has the advantage under those situations. Had the three Federal forces been together under a single commander, even Jackson could have done little more than harass them.

My Family moved to the Valley in the late 1700's from Dauphen Co., Pa.,Derry Township. to Pleaant Valley, Va. My ancestors fought in the Revolution against he English and when the traitorous Confederates moved into the Valley to burn, rape and steal, my Ancestors fought them as well! My descendants were simple farmers and People of the Book, peaceful tillers of the land, until pushed by Tyranny to fight!

Amazing presentation! I am from South Carolina but I have relatives from Virginia with that sound similar in accent and i enjoy hearing that old southern dictation/dialect especially when it is an amazing history lesson about One of Dixies greatest heroes! One of My ancestors fought under stonewall in AP Hills light brigade (14th SC under Maxcy Gregg) , I have Others that rode in Wade Hamptons Legion cavalry and others that were in Beauregard’s light artillery and 1st SC rifles (Orrs). God save Dixie! May God shine his light eternally on the land Where our ancestors fell In defense of liberty, their loved ones & their homes Deo vindice !

Wow! This was fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this video. As a Virginian who was born and raised in Arlington, I have visited Manassas battlefield many, many times and gazed upon the statue of Thomas Jackson imagining how it must have been on that fateful day when he was given his immortal nickname. He will always be my favorite General.

I live in front royal va and lived in Winchester for a bit but yeah it hits home to me as well I got To the church they show in this I have stood in many spots Jackson stood and it’s a feeling like no other makes me proud to be a Virginian

I have read the English people who comment, that Southern American English is more closely linked than Northern American English. For l have heard words that y'all still use today spoken here in Texas and other places l've been to in the South. For instance, l use reckon, learnt, and other words that Yankees ask what does that mean or make a snide remark. I don't know your age,but l've heard the guitarist Jimmy Page say learnt in videos on KZfaq. And other people of England narrating say reckon. Our Yankees are flummoxed by our speech.

Why is this video plagued with commercials? Isn't this a public broadcasting station paid for by our tax dollars? Great content but unmonwtize this stuff. We're already paying you even though we shouldn't be paying for radio or TV broadcasts with the public dollar.

You are so correct. There are no commercials in public broadcasting. However, youtube streaming is a direct cost for us that is not associated with BROADCASTING. So far... no-one is paying for the cost of streaming... except us. Also to your point...should the public dollar not be spent on public museums, public parks, public streets, or public health?

Well you see it was a North Carolina regiment that shot him and he had gone ahead of the main force of his men to scout to see for him self the situation of the union soldiers and it was dark and the North Carolinas heard horses and thought it was a union Calvert charge and shot so it’s not like they done it on purpose and I can tell no one in the comments here has ever even study battle tactics of the time and he did not die from the wounds of the shots he got pneumonia and that is what killed him but simple fact his name goes on in history while all of you and mine will not and he accomplished greater tasks then we ever could have and that normal for people of lower accomplishments to criticize people of greater achievement
