The Civil War engulfed that part of Virginia from Leesburg to Charlottesville with such intensity that it became known as "The Desolate Land". It was a land of wealth and of servitude, and a land of differing views. This mixture of rolling hills and dense forests witnessed numerous small but bloody skirmishes and enormous strategic battles. That region is the focus of Blue Ridge PBS's fourth installment in the series on the Civil War in Virginia.
Divided Loyalties: Virginia's Northern Piedmont in the Civil War is hosted by the late Dr. James I. Robertson Jr., Alumni Distinguished Professor in History at Virginia Tech. From the one-sided affair at Balls Bluff to the awesome cavalry engagement at Brandy Station, from the daring Mosby's Rangers to the unique John Minor Botts, cities to railroad junctions to river crossings, churches and hospitals, the war left it's imprint on all. ‪@BlueRidgeStreaming‬

Most folks don't appreciate how many people in the south were against succession. Mountainous regions in particular. Conversely - for example - many in northern Missouri, southern Illinois, and southwest Indiana had been settled from the south and had strong southern leanings.

Missouri consisted from 4 parts: 1. area: Ozark region which was prounionist. This area had low % slave population. In Arkansas the Ozark region also was prounionist with low % slave population. 2. area: The Iowa border stripe counties with low % slave population also were prounionist. Their big success was 3. area: St Louis and the neighbore counties with low % slave population. These counties were prounionist area. Here 2 counties voted to Abraham Lincoln in 1860 november! 4. area: The Missouri river area with high % slave population. This area was the Little Dixie and strong proconfederacy area. Missouri gave 40 000 confederacy soldiers and bushwackers, but the state gave 110 000 unionist soldiers as the famouse 44th infantry regiment the heroes of the battle of Franklin in 1864. The Illinois, Indiana and Ohio were populated in majority from border states of the South until 1830. (Abrham Lincoln was born in Kentucky.) The Northern settlers arived after 1830 to change MidWest to be Northern type states. Later the European immigrants increased the antislavery attitude in Midwest. Illinois had movement to change the state to be slave system state untill 1844. Elijah P Lovejoy was killed by proslavery mob in Altona Illinois in 1837. South Illinois, South Indiana and South Ohio people had the strongest family connection to Kentucky as Lincoln had. So Kentucky held beside the USA not only was important alone to Lincoln, but it stabilized South part of Midwest too.

Mosby and Longstreet became Republicans. However Forrest's life is also interesting. The leader and founder of the KKK left the KKK and Forrest became the one of first Civil Right movement protagonists before his death.

No, they died for their country. Even though you could never take the steps into a firestorm as those men did. For no one would dare call them cowards!
