Famous for its use in the Andrews Raid in April 1862, this classic Civil War steam locomotive was refurbished to operate during centennial of that event. Vintage Kodachrome 8mm movies capture the centennial run through north Georgia on April 14, 1962 and subsequent operations of the General. Am from Columbus Georgia and my neighbor was an engineer. I got to ride in the cab of the steam locomotive when I was about 5. I remember it and I also remember being mad because I didn’t get to ride in the caboose….weird to think of that now. We made the trip from Atlanta to Columbus. I’m now 60 and I have steam locomotive HO scale trains in my basement. Still love the rails.

I remember seeing the General in Cleveland, Ohio, when it was on its tour in 1962. It was parked in the Cleveland Union Terminal under the Terminal Tower, which, at the time, was the tallest building in Cleveland. I was 10 years old at the time, and had just written a book report on the Andrews Raid. I remember it being in pristine condition, beautifully painted, and shiney. I was a fan of steam locos years before, from watching NKP Berkshires roll through town, so this was quite a thrill.

Visiting from Australia I had the honour in seeing what I would deem a legend in the annuals of world railways. Up there with the famous hero casey jones, the Flying Scotsman and the Orient Express the General Is the first known train high jacking. The raid & raiders were brave men fighting for the cause they believed in, right or wrong some 162 years later their exploits and daring have been registered in stone. Yes sir .

The General's near-sister, the William Crooks, is in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, MN. The resemblance between the two is amazing. I think the last time the Crooks ran was in the late 60's. The Crooks was built for the St. Paul and Pacific Railway, later renamed the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba which was then leased to the Great Northern Railway. Like the General, it would be really cool to see her run again but there's not enough money in the world to do the work required. As Adam Bass said about the prospect of reviving the General, it would be cheaper to build a replica. If you don't know the story of the Raid and the chase it's well worth reading about. There will certainly never be another Captain William Fuller.

@@airailimages I like the way it looks in the video-that is about identical to the way the Crooks is today. Is the General really burning wood in the video or is that just for show while there's coal in the tender? So great to see the crowds come out to see her. Bet we wouldn't get that kind of response today.

Wow, I do woodcrafts in my 12X16 backyard wood shop, just scrollsaw, mini wood lathe and various support tools. I come accross a woodworking project and in it there is a locomotive called the General. I built it and had a good time doing it. Forgive me for not being up on history but I just did a search on you tube for info on General, For the life of me I did not know there was an actual general and the wooden toy model I had just made is a very good model of the locomotive in the videos. I have spent the afternoon researching the general. What an impressive history it is. Maybe one day I will get to see the real one. I am taken and very impressed, glad I found out I replicated a bit of history. There is a man in our town, really been good to me and he is into trains, I built the tender and today I made a passenger car. When finished I am going to present him with a General of his on..........

This was brought to the state of Georgia by walt Disney to make the movie the great locamotive chase. And the movie was shot on the Tallulah falls railroad in Tallulah falls Georgia. And because Disney did this the political mechanism bought it to Atlanta because to Get the engine the general and the engine the Texas to Tallulah falls Georgia. They first had to travel through Atlanta

When the movie was filmed in 1956, the 'General' was not operational and was on static display in Chattanooga, TN. Neither the original 'General' or the 'Texas' appeared in the movie. The 'General' was played by the engine 'William Mason' and the 'Texas' was portrayed by the 'Inyo'. The 'General' was returned to Georgia in 1972 and is housed in the Southern Museum in Kennesaw, Ga and the 'Texas' is on display at the Atlanta History Center.

I don't know what it's current condition is, but if it was put up properly after these films were made, it's probably good to go. Just needs a little maintenance. Probably some oil here and there. Put water in it and some fire. Steam engines are very simple as long as the boiler is good.
@AdamBass01
@AdamBass01 6 жыл бұрын
To run in todays world? Well you better play the lottery!!!! Let me give you the scoop on this one jack. FRA requires a 1,472 day inspection. All flues and tubes are pulled and replaced with new ones. Boiler is ultrasounded for any thin metal spots. If found they must be replaced. All appliances on loco must be taken off, torn apart, inspected, rebuilt and put back together and tested. The whole locomotive gets stripped down to nothing but wheels and a boiler shell. Full rebuild then the shiny stuff get put on, but not before a hydrostatic test on the boiler is done first. Once that is complete her time and clock starts. You gotta have her put back together and running for 15 years or 1,472 days which ever comes first! The time, money and a place to run are your big limiting factors. Not to mention she is in a brick building, so how do you get her out? Your better off having David Kloke build you a civil war replica of the General and it would meet todays mandated requirements. That will cost you around 3 million dollars though. So that is what it will take to get her operating. Not to mention the mounds upon mounds of paperwork!
@AdamBass01
@AdamBass01 6 жыл бұрын
Wrong the engine would need a complete rebuild in order to be complaint with FRA part 243 Steam Locomotive codes and regulations. Just because she has sat inside doesn't mean she is ready to go. She had modifications done to her since the L&N restored her back then. She is a oil burner now, not wood. The engine hasn't moved in over 30+ years everything is seized up. As I have previously stated in my earlier reply everything that needs to be done before she could ever run on the rails again. Period end of discussion. Just have David Kloke build a replica!
@bluefoxy6478
@bluefoxy6478 4 жыл бұрын
Well it would need a new boiler to follow FRA regulations which shouldn't be expensive compared to literally every locomotive from early to mid 20th century plus as long as theres not many other parts to fix or replace American 4-4-0's are pretty easy to maintain as long as you know what your doing, then getting it out of the building, that would be difficult, but not impossible. It would be expensive, but its doable.

She is in a brick building in Downtown Kennesaw by my house. The building is also on a hill 300 ft from the tracks so she would need a crane to be moved back on the tracks. I love going to the museum to see this great piece of history.
