The working 2-8-0s of the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina RR were well-known features around Johnson City and Elizabethton, Tenn., into the 1960s. These color home movies capture the essence of well-maintained No. 208 switching cars around Elizabethton, with a cameo scene depicting the fireless cooker switcher at a rayon plant.

Those 2-8-0s wound up to be the last members of the Ks-1 consolidation. Thank goodness they were bought by the ET&WNC.

I remember my dad gathering me and mom outside to watch her final run before the diesel took her place. She was headed into Johnson City, we lived in Cedar Grove half a mile up from the quarry at the old Gouge farm.

Thanks for the video. My cousin Brownie (C.C. Allison) worked on 208 in Elizabethton. A lot of that footage around the water tank reminds me of watching him at work.

Thanks for posting! I’ve seen the little North American Rayon steam tank engine at the park where it sits with the caboose. Really Kool to see it in action on the Tweetsie as a switcher.

Those were some beautiful locomotives. It's great to see equipment that was taken care of (when it was still in use, anyway).

Part of the ET&WNC that runs through the gorge is now owned by a summer camp. They maintain a few miles of it, but they use an 0-4-0 Plymouth diesel. It would be nice to have something comparable to this still in operation. Either way, I'm glad that part of the railway is still in good condition

Well that is the narrow gauge part that was the major traffic part. I know from "rumors" and ill keep it at that until I see it but the Doe River Gorge is supposed to have acquired a new steam locomotive. I know a few friends that will work on it to get it ready but, who knows. At last there will be more operational steam back on the old gorge line.

@@airailimages thank you for the videos. Everything a kid enjoys watching. Walking along the tracks a GG1 flew by and I knew what I wanted to do. So I became a pilot.

Fred Kirby turned me on to the railroad. And one day I recall my grand mother calling to the t.v.It was about this part of the railroad.Which was on the carolina camera,Years later I got to see this type of locomotive in action at the nctm number 604.These locomotives are a lot bigger in person than on t.v.

They are arrangements made with software. Some of it is arranged with Sony Cinescore and some with an older Magix Soundpool.

208 returned to Southern and worked under her old number 722 with 630 (ET&WNC 207) during the steam program, 630 ended up at TVRM, and is still in operable condition, 722 ended up at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, and is not in operable condition.

Don’t worry East coast rail chasers. 208 used to be southern 722. She was replaced by a diesel and sold back to the southern. She hauled excursions for a steam program until her flue time expired. Causing the engine to be forced back into retirement. Today, she sits dismantled outside of the Great Smokey Mountains Railroad.
