Unlike zwallop, I love the fact that you dig into things like what genre this game belongs to. A million and one guys (and girls) online talk about games. They play games. They show gameplay. But VERY few really dig into a game to truly explain it, even to the development of the game and history and such like you do. So keep things EXACTLY the same, Roo. Awesome stuff, as always.

I have the SNES version of this because I'm always up for a good challenge and Sunset Riders is one of the many games that I have that has a real challenge! And FYI, I got my copy at a cheap price of only three dollars and ninety-five cents and I got it at a used video game store. Konami was one of my favorite gaming companies during the NES and SNES era, which is why I have Sunset Riders and 6 other titles they put out on the SNES!

Something both versions lacked, and a cool little touch, play as Cormano in the arcade version. Get to those boss of the train stage, defeat him. When he dies, his hat flies off, and Cormano catches it, and replaces his old hat with the one the boss drops, or more like flies off, and Cormano catches mid air. He then proceeds to wear that hat the rest of the game.

I used to play this game while waiting for my dad at the gym when I was like 6. He'd leave me with the equivalent pf maybe 10 quarters (these were actually 1 sol coins, which were worth more to me than a quarter) and I'd play for maybe an hour while he did his workout.... Possibly not the BEST parenting now that I think about it, but damn did I have some fun. I never knew the name of the game, so I'm surprised and grateful to find it here.

The difference between a shmup and a run n gun is that in shmups a player can not control the movement of the screen or the timing in which the enemies appear (ex. rtype and galaxian) While a run and gun dose have the option to stand still and encounter enemies at their passe. Like any VG genre their is some overlap, as some games have levels in both styles in the same game.

Though the SNES was almost a direct port of the arcade, it is missing some of the details that was in the arcade, such as the humorus deaths like the characters roasting up after being burned and getting flatten by rocks and barrels. The Native American enemies in the Canyon stage (with exception of the boss) are replace with the regular bandits from the previous levels. Whats strange is that the Genesis version included the elevator rope segment that was in the arcade but not found in SNES

I absolutely love when a specific game on the SNES is different on the Genesis. This is because I'm not a fan of collecting the SAME EXACT game on both consoles. When that happens I'll just buy the "better" of the two. However, with Sunset Riders and Aladdin I'm able to buy both and essentially have a longer game. That equals more fun and re-playability!
@Bloodreign16 жыл бұрын
I'm different on this, I will buy the same game on different pltforms from the days of old, because while the game may be the same for both, they always sounded different, sometimes played different, and often had bonus things that were different from the other versions, or absent from the other versions. It's why I have 6 different versions of Puyo Puyo Tsuu in my collection (MD, SFC first revision, PS1, PS2, Saturn, Gameboy), each had something different from the other.

That was Life Force (U.S.)/Salamander (Japan) when he introduced the "shoot 'em up", not Gradius. I know it was in the Gradius family, set in the same universe, made and released by konami as a sequel of sorts to Gradius, but it was a seperate game. Have to make the distinction because I spent countless hours playing and beating that game on my NES growing up.

This game was a blast and pretty darn hard if I remember right. I'm a Genesis guy so that was my version but I will say I'm curious about the more arcade-style SNES version - 8ish level and even harder? Nice. I will say I remember the Genesis soundtrack being pretty awesome with some tracks that weren't on the SNES version. The particle/projectile effects look better on SNES, no contest, but the background color palettes look WAY too bright on the SNES footage... like unnaturally washed out. I felt the darker palette on Genesis was more appropriate for the setting but if you grew up with the SNES version I certainly wouldn't fault you for preferring that. Sprites were kinda hard to tell. I recognized the Genesis variant right away from that but the sprites on SNES version looked noticeably different - side effect of being a more direct arcade port, I'd wager. Anyway, cool review, loved this game - certainly was a classic.
@Maru969 жыл бұрын
"but the background color palettes look WAY too bright on the SNES footage..." Because the arcade was like that. The genesis version could look similar if Konami didn't half-assed the port.

Now a days one thing to consider is price. I think the SNES version is probably better, but I traded it awhile ago and recently bought the genesis version because, while not quite as good, it's more affordable. Where I'm from it was either 40ish for Genesis Sunset riders or wait and try and find the SNES one locally, which would be at least 75 loose, probably more. Not sure it's worth that much extra.

+The Zachvolt While the arcade version is in every way superior to the (still rather great) SNES port, the Sega version isn't really a port at all but rather a "remix" or a semi-sequel - similarly to Konami's TMNT game for the Genesis. It uses bosses, graphics and music from the arcade game but level layouts are completely changed - and IMO better. Gameplay and controls is also changed up and tuned, making it well worth playing even if you've played the arcade version. While it does lack in content in comparison - for memory and storage reasons I'd bet - I would say the gameplay is improved so much that, being used to the Sega version, playing the arcade original feels like a step backwards. Similar to how playing the more colorful arcade version of Contra after being used to the much improved NES port.

Both games are fun as hell, but the Snes wins this match up. The Genesis version is only a 4-Meg cart and came out almost a entire year earlier compared (hence no voices, only 2 playable characters, less variety in the stages) to the Snes which is 8-Meg. I love that the Genesis version kept the Indian enemies intact, but I wish there was a stage where you killed enemies riding a horse like in the Snes/Arcade version.

Mega Drive fanboy here. While I can admit that the SNES version is better, there's one thing I can not let pass: the audio was great on the Genesis. And not only in Sunset Riders: v=hQJY5U6tKm8 The MD version of Sunset Riders was rushed. That's why there are horse riding stages as bonuses but not in the main levels, as well as why it runs slower on a much faster console.
