Research on the PlayStation Move began as early as 2001, stemming from parallel development of the EyeToy which was eventually released in 2003. An early prototype version of the Move was demonstrated in a technology demo known as "Magic Duel" in 2001, in which developers experimented with color-based 3D controller tracking, including prototypes using spheres.

Awesome breakdown of the move, kinect and 3DS man! You should do a few more of these, like the virtual boy and some other stuff! Also the 16 and 8bit gems series is stellar too. Keep up the solid and information packed videos!

@bcta302 If you watch the video, you'll see that the only part of the PS Move that I note was first used by the Wii were accelerometers in the controller (I didn't even mention that Wii MotionPlus used gyroscopes first). Sony's innovations involving the Eyetoy, PS Eye, and orb tracking system are all theirs, and I give credit where it's due. All that said, this is an informative piece, and not meant to incite fanboyism. Similarities noted were tongue-in-cheek and used for comedic effect.

@LocoLogo95 I've already said this but "I remember hearing somewhere that Nintendo wanted to create a console with a disk drive, so they teamed up with Sony, but then Sony ditched them and that console became the PS1, which would mean that Nintendo wasn't copying Sony with the Gamecube because they were already planning on making a disk-using console in the first place." However, someone named pooody informed me afterwards that it was actually Nintendo that ditched Sony.

Copying other companies' products is just another part of entrepreneurship . You just have to remember who did it first, ALSO who is doing it better. The PS move attempt to improve the motion sensing controls from the Wii, which is good. May the evolution of video games continue to make gaming more fun.

"The Nintendo GameCube (ニンテンドーゲームキューブ Nintendō Gēmukyūbu?), officially abbreviated to NGC in Japan[4][5] and GCN in North America,[6] is a video game console released by Nintendo on September 15, 2001 in Japan." Thanks wikipedia, but if you could get the exact date of when the move demo was out that would be good.

hi, no, i wasn't trying to answer an other post. I was answering your post, but yes, perhaps I should've have make it as a reply to Mr Stefan van Westing's post, but that would make even less sense. He already answered something that, you might find, is making sense. I was simply adding to the conversation beyond the obvious. The tomato joke is hilarious though.

I suppose it might of been inspiration from the tech demo, but maybe somehow it MIGHT of been coincidence that they both had the same idea, it might of been scrapped, seen as though we didn't see it till 2010 again. Seeing the success of the Wii they thought "Lets give it another go."

The move has a noticeable delay in reading motion inputs. It's accurate but not condusive to fast paced intuitive action. I'm also, along with a lot of hardcore gamers, not a huge fan of motion controls. I think a controller is more intuitive and precise. Plus, most actually fun games require performing actions in games that are better mapped to triggers or buttons anyway.

to further your point, joysticks are old technolgy, Nintendo introduced them as analog sticks with the 64 when the PS1 had D-Pad only. and well guess who came out with anolog sticks a few months later? but it was different, they were being original, i mean who else put TWO joysticks at the time? /= |

There's not really much to ROB as his basic operation is basically the same as the zapper. Unlike the zapper though, the game encodes the commands using pulse width modulation (Wikipedia it for more details) which basically flashes the screen on and off to send different commands in binary with a flash being a 1 and a blank 0. ROB has some circuitry inside of him that does timing and interprets this and moves accordingly. This form has some interesting specifics tinyurl(dot)com/c8apq84

@maniacchris But Sony started Move's technology before Wiimote came out... After watching that video I sent, I think it's not fair to say that Sony copied the Wii more. Clearly Move is based on its own technology, a technology develop before Wii came out. It's a controller that you're going to hold with only one hand, then logically it has to be shaped in that way (a stick?), even if it looks like the Wiimote. And even in that video you can see that what supports the ball is a stick.
