This game is my favorite of all time. It's hardly the best game ever made, but it's my favorite one. It's short and super charming. Love it.

The most impressive thing here is in the first 30 seconds we see you not only have so many of the great classics...but you have them all in their ORIGINAL boxes!! I kick myself all the time when looking at my collection and seeing maybe 10 games in their boxes, and all the rest in plastic shells.

In 4th grade I rented this game often and somehow my save file always survived. Then, in a stroke of genius, rented it again for spring break and did a little something called "didn't return it until I wanted to". Rental/late fees exceeding the games value was a small price to pay for victory.

This. God it pissed me off, hearing that shit. I don't get his point about the sound effects either. Much better than Illusion of Gaia's by far...in Soul Blazer it actually feels satisfying to kill enemies because of the sound effects unlike in IoG where it feels like you're hitting enemies with a plastic toy.

For anyone wondering, there actually is an unofficial fourth game in the Soul Blazer pseudo-series. It's called The Granstream Saga for the PS1. It's a different company, Shade, but almost all of the same people. Battles are very different, but the overall feel and themes of the game are the same. Just a note for anyone wanting a little more Quintet goodness.

I'm not too much of an action RPG fan but that has to be one of favorites of all time. I really loved the concept of releasing people and parts of towns and dungeons through the switches. It's like in Dragon Quest games where you get the Theif's/Magic/Dungeon key and get to go back to unlock all the goodies you missed.

Very happy you chose to review Soul Blazer and wrap up the "Gaia trilogy" to celebrate your 2 year anniversary. I am definitely enjoying sharing Soul Blazer with people on my own channel. I am curious about your mention of being "not done" with Quintet yet. Perhaps a Robotrek review coming?... eventually? ;)

I've always felt annoyed that this is called a trilogy - I definitely noticed as a kid that SoulBlazer was a clear "sequel" to Actraiser - re-used interface, Master, Death Toll, sounds (explosion, voices). I've never quite understood why Actraiser gets dropped, in my mind it was clearly the first one. Maybe just because there was no Turbo dog :/
@lowlifestyle
@lowlifestyle 10 жыл бұрын
The gameplay of Actraiser doesn't resemble the Gaia trilogy's gameplay so that has a lot to do with it.
@mikedx42
@mikedx42 10 жыл бұрын
You mean overhead versus the combo sim/side-scroller. I think you're right, actually - I never thought of that! You've opened my eyes. Still, I'll blame the dog.
@0Fyrebrand0

Mike D I agree, Actraiser is definitely the first in this line of spiritually-related games. I actually have never heard of them referred to as a "trilogy," though. I'm used to Actraiser being included. Nihilfist Similar gameplay is usually a given within a series, but not always. I mean, look at Zelda II -- the gameplay is totally different from the first game, but nobody says it isn't part of the series. I've always considered Soul Blazer an obvious "spiritual successor" to Actraiser -- they are more related than any other games by Quintet. Despite the different battle systems, both games have extremely similar themes, and even similar rhythm in gameplay structure. In both, you play as a sort of "blank slate" avatar of God (or "The Master"), interacting with living creatures only on a rather distant level, just enough to solve their immediate crisis within the self-contained vignette of each zone. Your goal is to stamp out the influence of the Devil (Tanzra, or Deathtoll) by sealing monster lairs -- thus freeing civilization to flourish and expand by little bits at a time. And if I recall correctly, in the end you leave your creation to find their own path and develop, without need of intervention or further guidance. For me, Actraiser and Soul Blazer are like two sides of the same coin -- same value, same substance, they came from the same place. Gaia and Terranigma feel like they are technically the same "side" of the coin as Soul Blazer, but they are different coins entirely.
@Seekarr
@Seekarr 10 жыл бұрын
Answer is simple. It's a geek culture thing; anything that is awesome must be in trilogy form, and if there were 4, it couldn't be a trilogy. Think of the Star Trek incident, once the holy trilograil of Greek triloculture - and now geeks hate Star Trek for violating the parameters of the sacred trilogy.

Playing through this game right now and it's great fun. One thing I would have mentioned is some of the monsters being coded...badly. There's one particular blob like monster that will often right right past you or stand right next to you and do nothing. It doesn't really hamper the game as it wouldn't really be difficult regardless (except the model towns which drove me nuts) but it is kind of amusing to watch.

I would actually rate the "series" in the opposite order. I was much more taken with Soul Blazer and much less taken with Terranigma. I would also give more credit to the Soul Blazer soundtrack. Though it may not be as "technically" impressive as the others, the ending theme and the town theme always "pulled at my heart strings".

Yeah it really is a fantastic series. Soulblazer was a better sequel to Actraiser than Actraiser 2 was, with the town building stuff left intact. I wish there were more games in this crossover genre besides these and Dark Cloud. Please make some more videos of great SNES games, I like them and you seem to have the same taste in those games that I have. Also, unrelated, but: fuck Google+ and the way they're trying to shove it down our throats. I couldn't even post this comment without a ton of hassle.

But, like I said, it really wasn't that bad of a game. I did enjoy some parts, the boss battles were kinda neat (but impossible to lose if you knew where to stand and attack), and the game's overall resurrection theme was nice, especially for its time, what with it being a video game in the 90's and all that. I started playing Illusion of Gaia a few months back but didn't get too far... perhaps I should beat it so I can get to Terranigma, a game that just looks awesome.
