This video comprehensively explains how thumbnail sketches work within the artistic process. There are many benefits of thumbnail sketches: they can save you time when working on a final piece of artwork and allow you to explore more options for composition. The demonstration shows simple strategies on how to crop or expand your thumbnail sketches and how to diversify your options. Demo and discussion led by Art Prof Clara Lieu and Teaching Artist Cat Huang.

I love it. It is not just extra helpful process but most fun too, surfing through so many the possibilities. I don't know if I'm allowed to make thumbnails as I'm not even close to being a real artist, but too late! I put on mother's heels and lipstick is all over the place 😊 huge Thank you❤

Heres my process for thumbnailing: brainstorm thumbnails(rly rough, can be anything surrounding the general vibe I want), selection amd iteration(selecting the best of stage 1 and playing with alternative versions), refined sketch(refining the best iteration for clarity, adding simple color, and adding some minor detail only just beyond big shapes/elements, then I move on to the final piece after any iterations of different stages, sometimes I restart that process, sometimes a completely new idea does a sidewinder to me and I go with that instead

I think thumbnails can be very fascinating - but my best work normallydoes not come from thumbnails - my way of opening into the creative process is jumping from deciding one or two colors and then a continue like a dance or jazz improvisation from their. Each piece of art is like a lucid dreaming and sometimes like a conversation with elements that call you.

That's another perfectly okay way to create a piece! I know tons of artists who prefer to improvise and see how the piece creates itself, instead of planning beforehand :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

one thing i think is a good bridge between thumbnails and the final piece is doing studies of my subject matter, especially if im drawing something im not experienced in. for example, im planning a big piece that includes angel wings, so i do studies of birds to help understand the structure and the way wings work.
@artprof

That's such a great method of working! Plus, then you have tons of cool drawings of wings to look back on :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff

I do my thumbnails at down times; waiting for water to boil, sitting in front of youtube.... they take a minute or two. By the time i get art-time i already know what I'm doing. I usually have 3-4 project ideas going at a time so its an easy rotation.

I studied Graphic Design in college and it's ALL about the thumbnails!! I don't get how people try to ANYTHING by just jumping onto the computer and playing around. I've tried that and ended up going back and making thumbnails so I could move forward and not feel lost. Imagine a house builder trying to build you a house with NO house plans. That could end up being a very wonky house.

I am such a thumbnail person-- I have to have a guideline or else I'll get SO overwhelmed! Or I'll be nearly done with a drawing and have a better idea than the first. I find it so helpful to think of a lot of designs first, and then choose my favorite :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

Hello. I draw cartoon characters ,mostly animal personification. When I draw I tend to make the size of the head a little to big causing the body to be to big therefor, leaving little room for everything else in my composition. Usually to fix this I change to a bigger sheet of paper or shrink my character down on a copier. I will try thumbnails but, Any tips on how to fix this besides thumbnails.

Oh em gee. They are so right. The first one is the most boring. Good thing I didn't marry my first love. Hahaha. 56:55 I do that. Sometimes if I like the frame/view/scene, I pause the movie/series episode just to have a good look , study and admire it. My sister is used to me doing that all the time during movie night/series marathon. I recommend Lucifer. Every frame is a work of art, I mean, besides the beautiful casts. Haha.

I went to the most booooooooring Advanced Arts course the other day and cannot bare to stick it out . I am so used to the laughing, fun and joy you people exude. I can’t do serious art sessions …..art and creation should be fun. English academic types are so precious and high brow over the arts as if no-one can do it until we have been to a ‘proper’ diploma, raised our game…..ugh…..£1,000 for a booooooorng day class which is not as fun and informative as your channel.
